European basketball star Chet "The Jet" Mason will host a weekend that will include a free basketball camp and charity basketball game to benefit youth just in time for the school year.

From 12-4 p.m. on Saturday, Mason will host a free basketball camp for boys and girls 8-17. Campers will receive free lunch and a tee shirt. The camp will take place at the Zelma George Rec Center at 3155 MLK Blvd in Cleveland.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday at Zelma George, Mason will play in a charity basketball game, which will include former University of Akron stars Dru Joyce Jr. and Romeo Travis. It's a school supply fund raiser. Bring in any type of school supply (notebooks, pencils, pens, etc) to enter for the game.

Mason, who starred at Cleveland South High School, has put on this event for four years.

"I do this because if I don't, who will," Mason said. "There are people doing some things politically but the kids listen more to me than they would the council person. I come from the same place as many of these kids. I come from the same rec center, and same schools as they do."

Mason, who starred at Cleveland South and Miami (Ohio), led Siroki Eronet to the  Bosnian Cup national men's basketball championship two months ago. Mason was also named the Most Valuable Player of the finals and he was the MVP during the regular season.

During the regular season, Mason was the first American to win the MVP of the Adriatic League, and he won the regular season MVP in the Bosnian National League.

Several local fans have started a petition for signatures that they will present to the Cavaliers, with the hope the team gives Mason a shot during training camp this fall.

"That's flattering," Mason said. "It's a wonderful feeling that people would do something like that. But I don't expect to get a call from the Cavs. I expect to go back overseas."
