AAA Columbus Clippers
Bulls 7, Clippers 0 Three Bulls pitchers combined to hold the Clippers to five hits and struck out nine as Columbus lost at Durham, N.C. Clippers pitcher Jeremy Sowers (1-6. 6.86) took the loss, giving up seven runs on 11 hits in three innings.
Notes: Going into Tuesday night's game, IF Cord Phelps was batting .392 (40-for-102) with 11 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 20 runs and 15 RBI since being promoted from Class AA Akron. Phelps was 16-of-34 (.471) in his last 10 games....3B Jared Goedert had 12 homers and 24 RBI in his last 24 games. He was batting .316 with 12 doubles, 16 homers, 33 RBI and 31 runs in just 152 at bats since being promoted from Akron. Goedert doesn't have enough plate appearances to qualify for the International League lead in batting or with his .711 slugging percentage, but his one homer per every 9.5 at bats led the league for every batter with at least five homers, and his 16 homers were sixth overall. The five IL players who had more homers than Goedert also had at least 73 more at bats than he did....Another Clipper promoted from Akron, IF Josh Rodriguez, was batting .331 (53-for-160) for Columbus, with 11 doubles, six homers, 33 runs and 28 RBI....RH reliever Bryce Stowell had pitched six scoreless, two-hit innings in four games for the Clippers, striking out eight and wlaking two. In a combined 29 games at Kinston, then Akron and Columbus, Stowell was 2-0 with seven saves and an 0.67 ERA in 53 2/3 innings. He had struck out 82 -- 13.8 strikeouts per every nine innings pitched -- and allowed 22 walks and 33 hits, holding opponents to a .180 batting average....RH reliever Vinnie Pestano (1-1, seven saves, 2.00) had pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings in his last seven games, fanning eight while giving up three hits and a walk.
AA Akron Aeros
Aeros 10, Curve 3 Second baseman Jason Kipnis (.338) hit two home runs, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall (.276), 1B Beau Mills (.229) and LF John Drennen (.310) homered, and Akron crushed visiting Altoona (Pa.) in Eastern League action at Canal Park.
Kipnis now has six homers, Chisenhall nine, Mills seven and Drennen three.
Kelvin De La Cruz (3-5, 5.16) started and earned the win. The lefty allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out three. Righty Bryan Price (3.55) allowed one hit in three innings of relief.
Notes: RHP Alex White, the Indians first-round pick in the 2009 draft, is holding opponents to a .198 batting average in 110 innings (66 at Akron, 44 at Kinston), the lowest batting average-against among all minor league pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched. White's combined 2.05 ERA is the third-best among all minor leaguers with 100 or more innings pitched. White, who has often had limited run support this season, is 5-4 at Akron after going 2-3 at Kinston. He is 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA over 25 1/3 innings in his last four starts....The Aeros were on a five-game winning streak going into Tuesday night's game....2B Jason Kipnis, an Indians second-round pick in the 2009 draft, was 13-for-20 (.650) in his last five games. Kipnis was batting .336 with 11 doubles and four homers at Akron after being promoted from Kinston, where he hit .300 with 12 doubles, three triples and six homers in 203 at bats.... ...OF Jerad Head (.295) was batting .340 (35-for-103) in his last 28 games....LH starter Scott Barnes (5-8, 4.95) is 2-1 with a 2.03 ERA in his last four games, allowing just 17 hits and six walks in 26 2/3 innings....OF John Drennen (.311) was 12-for-35 (.343) in his last nine games....Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera, on a rehabilitation assignment from a broken left forearm before being brought back to Cleveland on Tuesday, was 7-for-20 (.350) with three doubles, one homer, four runs and three RBI in four games at Akron combined with two previous games at Mahoning Valley....Indians RF Shin-Soo Choo, on a rehabilitation assignment as he recovers from a sprained right thumb, was 1-for-3 for the Aeros on Monday night.
Advanced A Kinston Indians
Indians 4, Dash 2 Starting pitcher Joe Gardner allowed one earned run in six innings, 2B Karexon Sanchez (.257) hit his eighth homer of the season, and the K-Tribe beat Winston-Salem in a Carolina League game in Kinston, N.C.
The right-handed Gardner (8-4, 2.62) gave up three hits and two walks while fanning two.
Notes: Going into Tuesday night's game, 3B Jeremie Tice was 10-for-23 (.435) in his last six games, after going 2-for-19 in his first five games with Kinston after being promoted from Lake County....OF Bo Greenwell was 16-for-38 (.421) in his last 10 games, making him 27-for-73 (.370) after his promotion from Lake County....LH reliever Chris Jones was 2-1 with one save and a 1.09 ERA in 41 1/3 innings over 19 games. Scrappers 4, Spikes 0 Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky (4-1, 2.04) allowed three hits in five innings as the Scrappers blanked the Spikes in New York-Penn League play in State College, Pa.
Kaminsky, a right-hander, walked two and struck out four. Lefty James Reichenbach (4.08) and righty James Ehlert (2.55) each pitched two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
SS Kevin Fontanez (.187) had two doubles and scored two runs for the Scrappers.
