Race car driver killed in track mishap

The Portage County Sheriff's Office said John Metzger, 55, of Cross Lane, W.Va., died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown Monday, where he was taken after the crash.

NELSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A race car driver was killed Monday morning when his car crashed into the guardrail after colliding with another car at the Nelson Raceway on Ohio 305.

The Portage County Sheriff's Office said John Metzger, 55, of Cross Lane, W.Va., died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown Monday, where he was taken after the crash.

Police said Metzger was racing another car at 10 a.m. to determine their starting positions at an upcoming competition at the Nelson Raceway when his Van Dieman RF98 race car clipped the other car and went out of control.

Metzger's car crashed into the guardrail.

Metzger was flown to the hospital in Youngstown, but he later died of his injuries.
