shaun-rogers-bike.jpgView full sizeBrowns head coach Eric Mangini does not anticipate hearing anything about whether defensive lineman Shaun Rogers will be suspended to start the 2010 season.

CLEVELAND -- New and notes from Eric Mangini's Thursday press conference.

* Defensive back Chris Roberson, who was carted off Tuesday with a right leg injury while attempting to defend a catch by Josh Cribbs, will miss at least a couple of weeks. Roberson, a fourth-year pro,  spent part of last season on Philadelphia's practice squad. He's also spent time with Detroit and played for Jacksonville.

* Browns punter Dave Zastudil will return tomorrow after having his right knee re-checked by his  surgeon, Mangini said.

* Mangini said of Saturday's Family Day Scrimmage at the Stadium: "It's as close as we can get to a game without it being a game.''

* Fullback Lawrence Vickers is expected back in practice this afternoon, Mangini said.

* Linebacker Eric Barton sat out Wednesday's evening session by redeeming a certificate for an offseason award. Others such as Ben Watson also won practice-free certificates for stellar offseason performance.

* Mangini said he wasn't anticipating any news today from visiting NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell regarding possible suspensions for Shaun Rogers and Robaire Smith, who were both caught with loaded guns at airports.

* Mangini said he's really liked what he's seen from quarterback Jake Delhomme. "I think he's done an excellent job,'' said Mangini. He said Delhomme's done a great job of handling the problems that come up within an offensive play.

* Rogers will work both at nose and end, Mangini said.

LeBron James helping the Miami real estate market.

lbjtightjg.jpgLeBron James

It looks like LeBron James has done more than just take his talents to South Beach, because his presence on the Miami Heat has meant a boom in real estate in the area.

Michael Miller (not the new Heat guard) writes on MiamiNewTimes.com writes how millionaire Russell Wright and his wife dropped $4.2 million on the penthouse atop the luxury Marquis skyscraper -- three blocks from American Airlines Arena -- the same day LeBron announced his decision.

That's the most spent on any downtown apartment so far this year, according to the article.

Edgardo Defortuna, head of Fortune International Realty, says the LeBron effect is real but hard to quantify. He says 49 units at Icon Brickell have sold since LeBron's announcement, and July sales for downtown were nearly double the number in June. "I've had friends from South America call and tell me they'll buy an apartment," he says, "but only if I can find them Heat tickets first."

New York -- Japanese eating champion Takeru Kobayashi is out of hot water over his arrest during a Fourth of July frank fracas.

The six-time champion appeared Thursday in a New York City court. The judge says the case will be purged from his record if he stays out of trouble for six months.

A contract dispute had kept Kobayashi out of the annual Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. He showed up anyway.

Kobayashi says he leaped onstage in the heat of a fan frenzy. His lawyer says officials waved him onstage.

He had pleaded not guilty to obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, of San Jose, Calif., won by gobbling 54 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Hooray for number two.

DailyTribune.com reporter Pat Caputo writes how despite talk of league expansion and super conferences, The Big Ten could have a banner year.

There are signs Big Ten football is on the upswing, writes Caputo and that centers around Ohio State.

As distressful as it may be to Michigan fans, who loathe the Buckeyes, Jim Tressel has build a program that is in position to win a national championship, perhaps as soon as this season.

Ohio State has won five straight Big Ten titles. They have been to the BCS title game three times, winning it once — although that victory over

With the exception of Michigan and Northwestern, The Big Ten could make plenty of noise in football this fall. They could make so much noise that Caputo writes:

Could the Big Ten be the second-best football conference in the nation behind only the Southeastern Conference?

It's looking more and more that way.

The Ohio State Buckeyes checked in for the start of preseason camp, with the first practice tomorrow and the Buckeyes putting on full pads for the first time next Tuesday.

Some notes from check-in and early interviews:

* Incoming freshman running back Roderick Smith was the only player expected who didn't report by the first meeting early this afternoon. Smith is expected to arrive from his home in Indiana either tonight or tomorrow. He was finishing some academic work and didn't come to campus for summer workouts with the rest of the freshmen in June.

* The players had a late-night workout on Tuesday in one final time with the strength and conditioning staff. It started at 10 p.m. and went until midnight and included the players pushing a van around a track in groups of five or six players. It was meant to represent the miles the team will travel for its roadtrips this season. Linebacker Brian Rolle said it started off as a crazy assignment was wound up being pretty fun.

* Left guard Justin Boren said the fight for the left tackle spot could go into the season in his mind. Mike Adams, Andrew Miller and maybe Marcus Hall are the contenders there.

* Kicker Devin Barclay said he'd like to win the kicking job all to himself, but he understands if what it best for the team is a split of the job with freshman Drew Basil. Jim Tressel said in Chicago that if the season started today, Basil would handle the kickoffs and field goals 43 yards and beyond, and Barclay would kick the field goals 42 yards and closer.

MLB suspended Indians third base coach Steve Smith for two games and fined Jensen Lewis for their part in Tuesday's fight with Boston. Red Sox's starting pitcher Josh Beckett and four of his teammates were fined as well.

Updated: 3:51 p.m.

BOSTON, Mass. -- This is a daily briefing of the Indians 2010 regular season. The Indians play the Red Sox tonight in the final game of a four-game series at Fenway Park.

Fenway Park's dimensions: Left field line 310 feet, left field power alley 379 feet, center field corner 420, right center field power alley 380, right field line 302. Height of the Green Monster (left field wall), 37 feet.

Game 109: Indians third base coach Steve Smith was suspended for two games and fined for his actions during a benches-clearing controntation with Boston in the eighth inning Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

Smith will begin serving his suspension tonight in the series finale against Boston. Manager Manny Acta has not decided who will coach third base. When Smith was ejected in Tuesday's game, first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. moved to third and hitting coach Jon Nunnally coached first.

"It is what it is," said Smith, while he was checking out of the Indians hotel on Thursday. "I've got no comment."

Indians reliever Jensen Lewis, who started the fight by throwing behind Adrian Beltre in the eighth inning, was fined. As was Josh Becket, Boston's starting pitcher, who hit Shelley Duncan and Shin-Soo Choo with pitches in the early innings.

Boston players Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury were fined for going on the field during the incident while on the disabled list.

Bob Watson, MLB's dean of disipline, labeled Smith's actions "inappropriate and aggessive' in a written statement.

No official word why Smith was suspended and fine, but it probably had something to do with re-igniting the confrontation after it had appeared to calm down. Smith said he heard Boston pitching coach John Farrell yelling at the Indians and asked Farrell, "What's up?"

Boston manager Terry Francona started screaming at Smith and had to be restrained.

"Francona said something and I said something back," said Smith after the game Tuesday night.

Back home: Anthony Reyes' rehab at Class AA Akron because of a sore back. He'll throw a bullpen for the Indians big-league staff Friday at Progressive Field. If all goes well, he'll resume his rehab assignment in another five days.

Reclaimed: Wes Hodges, claimed by the Rockies when he was taken off the Indians 40-man roster to make room for Josh Tomlin, was reclaimed by the Indians. The Rockies put him on outright waivers after claiming him.

Hodges was optioned to Class AAA Columbus.

Trade: The Indians acquired minor league catcher Juan Apodaca and infielder Argenis Reyes  from Boston for cash.  Apodaca was hitting .209 (9-for-43) with three doubles, one homer and six RBI in 14 games at Class AAA Pawtucket after hitting .248 (33-for-133) with six doubles, two homers and six RBI at Class AA  Portland.

Reyes hit .256 (11-for-43) in 14 games at Pawtuckett after being released by the Dodgers in April. He played in the Indians minor league system from 2001 and 2007. He played 58 games in the big leagues with the Mets in 2008 annd 2009.

Reyes will go to Columbus, while Apodaca goes to Akron. Catcher Damaso Espino was promoted to Columbus to make room for Apodaca.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky woman was convicted Thursday of demanding millions of dollars from Rick Pitino to keep secret their one-night stand in a restaurant, then claiming the Louisville basketball coach raped her after he reported the extortion.

Karen Cunagin Sypher, 50, of Louisville, was found guilty of three counts of extortion, two counts of lying to the FBI and one count of retaliating against a witness. She stared at the ceiling as the verdict was read, while one of her sons wept openly.

The case involved a 2003 sexual encounter between Pitino and Sypher, a former model at car shows, at a table inside an Italian restaurant closed for the night. Pitino testified she came on to him and the sex was consensual. After she was charged, Sypher told police it was rape but Pitino was never charged.

Last year, Pitino received three threatening phone calls and two letters demanding cash and gifts for Sypher to keep the tryst secret. One of the letters showed to the jury was a handwritten note from Sypher that asked for cars, tuition for her children and her mortgage to be paid off.

Neither Sypher or her attorney commented as they left federal court following her eight-day trial. But one of her sons, Jacob Wise, confronted prosecutors. "Thanks for taking my mother away, guys," said Wise, 20.

A University of Louisville spokesman said the coach was traveling and referred calls to Pitino attorney Steve Pence, who said the jury did the right thing.

A news conference with Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Jury foreman Glen Elder told The Associated Press the panel went through the charges line by line and there were no disagreements during about five hours of deliberations that began Wednesday afternoon.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of 26 years in prison, but under federal sentencing guidelines, the penalty will likely be lighter. She will remain free until her sentencing Oct. 27.

"This was nothing more than a pure shakedown of Richard Pitino," Assistant U.S. attorney Marisa Ford told jurors in closing arguments.

Sypher's attorney James Earhart told jurors Sypher had been "villainized" during the trial. He argued that the government's case proved that "rules don't apply to the privileged" like Pitino, who was the star witness.

Prosecution and defense attorneys questioned the coach in detail about the night he met Sypher, then known as Karen Wise. Pitino, a married father of five, told the jury the two had sex in the empty restaurant after she whispered to him and then unzipped his pants.

Pitino said the sex lasted "15 seconds" and was unfortunate.

Although Sypher never testified, jurors heard her version of events when prosecutors played a never-broadcast TV interview where she claimed Pitino raped her.

"All he said was shut up, shut up and be quiet," she said on the tape.

Although some witnesses described Sypher as persistent and flirty that night, no one else testified to witnessing the sex.

Tim Sypher, a longtime Pitino aide and now Karen Sypher's ex-husband, testified he arranged for an abortion and paid for it with $3,000 Pitino had given Karen Sypher. He testified that the two met when Pitino asked him for help after she said she was pregnant.

Pitino said he thought the money was for counseling and medical needs but Sypher later said she had an abortion.

Pitino has coached at Louisville since 2001. He has coached three different schools to the Final Four — Louisville, Providence and Kentucky, where he won a national title. Along with the Celtics, Pitino also coached professionally with the New York Knicks.

BOSTON, Mass. -- If this is the good news regarding catcher Carlos Santana, what would the bad news have been?

Santana, the Indians top prospect, will undergo surgery on his left knee Friday at the Cleveland Clinic and miss the rest of the season. Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer, said Santana will need the next four to six months to recover from the operation.

Dr. Rick Parker will do the surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He will repair the strained lateral collateral ligament on the knee.

"Carlos is expected to make a full recovery by the beginning of the 2011 championship season," said Soloff.

Soloff said this was not reconstructive surgery, which usually requires six months to a year of recovery time, because Santana is not having a ligament from another part of his body or from a cadaver transplanted into his knee.

Santana was injured in a collision at home plate Monday night with Boston outfielder Ryan Kalish. On a single to right field, Kalish tried to score from second. Santana caught the throw from Shin-Soo Choo, turned and was rocked by Kalish's slide. He was knocked head over heels and a cleat in his left shoe spike caught in the dirt.

He held onto the ball for the out, but was taken off the field on cart with his left leg in an air cast.

Soloff said it is a rare baseball injury.

"Every indication is that the injury to Carlos' knee is outside the knee," said Soloff. "In a case of an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) surgery, those reconstructions are on the inside of the knee."

P.M. Cleveland Indians links: Tribe's patchwork roster getting it done against winning teams

Manager Manny Acta's hustling team is making things tough on opponents who look far superior on paper -- and in the standings.

manny-acta2.jpgIndians manager Manny Acta has his young team playing respectable baseball.

Cleveland -- How about those Cleveland Indians?

Their roster features journeyman veterans finally getting extended opportunities and youngsters striving to become established big leaguers.

They've played their last 27 games against winning teams. They've won 14 of them.

The Indians throttled the Red Sox in Boston, 9-1, on Wednesday night. Tonight, the Tribe tries to play spoiler again, when they finish their four-game series with the BoSox. Indians rookie right-hander Josh Tomlin (1-0, 1.46), who has been impressive in his first two big league starts, and Boston righty Daisuke Matsuzaka (7-3, 4.09) will take the mound. Cleveland has won two of the first three games.

Tonight's game is previewed on cleveland.indians.mlb.com.

Plain Dealer Indians beat writer Paul Hoynes covered the Indians' win on Wednesday night, which featured Justin Masterson's pitching and Andy Marte's three-run home run. Also, check Hoynes' Indians Insider and Indians Chatter, and his report on Indians third base coach Steve Smith drawing a suspension, and pitcher Jensen Lewis getting fined for their parts in a scuffle with the Red Sox on Tuesday night.

Asdrubal Cabrera leading

Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is just 24, but a four-year veteran and maybe growing into a leadership role. Sheldon Ocker writes for the Akron Beacon Journal, referring to Indians manager Manny Acta:

But Cabrera wasn't singled out by the manager by process of elimination.

''He brings a lot to the table,'' Acta said. ''He's a very nice team player. He will bunt on his own and get things started for us. He's been in the playoffs, and I expect him to take a bigger role.''

In other words, a major part of leadership in the clubhouse is the ability to perform on the field. Backup players aren't likely to become leaders.

Juggling Acta

Combine the young roster with injuries, trades and other player transactions, and it's quite a puzzle that Indians manager Manny Acta has had to work with.

Jim Ingraham writes about Acta's juggling for the News Herald and Lorain Morning Journal:

The Indians' lineup is a work in progress. They have used 98 different lineups in 108 games. Wednesday night's version had an interesting look in that the designated hitter was only hitting .215 and only one of the nine players had more than seven home runs.

"It's going to be tough for us to have a consistent lineup, especially since we're still trying to find out about guys at second base and third base," said Manager Manny Acta.

Masterson vs. Lester

The Indians acquired Wednesday night's winning pitcher, Justin Masterson, from the Red Sox last July 31 as part of the package for catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez.

Boston thought highly of Masterson, so much so that he pitched in nine of the Red Sox' 11 postseason games in 2008. Pitching in relief, Masterson was 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 9 2/3 innings.

Masterson is still trying to establish consistency as a starter, but has shown promise with several superb outings.

Meanwhile, Boston ace left-hander Jon Lester took the loss to the Indians. Lester had a 53-19 career record before losing his last four starts.

Peter Abraham writes in his game story for the Boston Globe:

Masterson has beaten the Red Sox twice this season, allowing one run in 14 innings. He is 2-10 with a 5.98 ERA otherwise. He lasted only five innings last night, but that was plenty given how Lester was struggling.

“Jon never got in a rhythm,’’ catcher Kevin Cash said. “You never expect it because he’s so good. But everybody is going to go through tough times.’’

Westbrook works it out

Among Jayson Stark's "Rumblings & Grumblings" for ESPN.com is commentary on the three-way trade in which the Indians sent veteran pitcher Jake Westbrook to the St. Louis Cardinals and acquired pitching prospect Corey Kluber:

But that trade still could have broken down as late as Saturday, if Westbrook hadn't agreed to pass on his $2 million relocation bonus -- because if the money hadn't worked, the Indians would have backed out of the deal.

However, Westbrook then agreed to go. The union signed off on the restructured contract. And the most fascinating trade before the deadline was, finally, a done deal.

NFL Commissioner Goodell still reviewing gun-related arrests of Cleveland Browns players

Shaun Rogers, Robaire Smith cases still under review by the NFL.

Shaun RogersNFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league is still reviewing the gun-related arrests of Browns defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Robaire Smith.

BEREA, Ohio --

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spent several hours visiting Browns training camp Thursday, fielding questions from season-ticket holders, media and players.

But one question Goodell did not answer conclusively is whether Browns defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Robaire Smith will face league suspensions for separate gun-related arrests over the past eight months.

Goodell said both incidents are still under review by his staff. He offered no timetable on making a ruling. But Goodell, who has made player conduct a high priority since succeeding Paul Tagliabue in 2006, sounded as if both players will face some discipline for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Rogers was arrested April 1 for carrying a loaded gun in a luggage bag while passing through a security checkpoint at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Rogers avoided a felony charge July 15 by entering a diversion program and agreeing to community service.

Smith was arrested in November for a similar offense in Bishop Airport in Flint, Mich. That incident, a misdemeanor offense in Michigan, did not come to light until recently, blindsiding even team President Mike Holmgren.

"Obviously, it's a clear mistake," Goodell said. "It is a violation of law. It's the kind of judgments that we have to make sure we do a better job of avoiding."

The same day Rogers entered the diversion program, he assisted police in pulling over an erratic driver on I-71 in Middleburg Heights by calling 9-1-1.

Goodell, who said he was aware of the latter incident, would not say if the Good Samaritan act would play a role in disciplining Rogers.

"It's a great example of a young man making a mistake on one hand and doing something very positive on the other," he said. "It's another demonstration that our guys do wonderful things on and off the field. They're going to make mistakes, though, and obviously they made a couple of mistakes here."

Goodell addressed the Browns' team later in the evening, but he said he would not specifically meet with Rogers and Smith to discuss their incidents.

The visit with the players focused entirely on resolving labor issues to reach a new collective bargaining agreement and avoid a work stoppage in 2011. Unlike previous NFL disputes, this one was initiated by team owners, who exercised their right to opt out of the previous CBA. Players union leaders believe the owners are preparing to lock out the players if a new agreement isn't reached by March.

The major issues are that owners want to roll back the amount of revenue devoted to player payroll and expand the regular season to 18 games while cutting out two preseason games.

Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, a member of the union's executive committee, said: "There have been 15 negotiation sessions and that's all we've heard -- 18 percent cutback (in player salaries), 18 games. That's it. Unfortunately there's not a whole lot of good news to report."

Goodell said: "This is something that is going to be settled at the negotiating table. I think we need to get to work. We need to find solutions to our issues. That's what people want, what our fans want, and that should be everyone's intent."

Goodell began the day in Latrobe, Pa., visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. He took a small plane to Cleveland and appeared on the Browns' practice field at about 2:45 p.m. He was joined by Hall of Fame coach and network analyst John Madden, who arrived later via a luxury bus, in fielding questions of Browns season-ticket holders after practice.

"I thought it was fantastic," said Bill Carothers of Chagrin Falls, a Browns season ticket-holder since 1975. "Having him come in here was an honor."

Madden revealed a little known fact when asked to name the one rule that has changed the game the most. He cited making it illegal for cornerbacks to bump receivers after 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

"Paul Brown was against [making contact with receivers] and really was the one who got that changed," Madden said. "It's a lot easier to pass today because of it."

Other topics Goodell covered:

•He wants to reduce the preseason to two games and expand the regular season to 18. With it would come a complete revamping of off-season programs, expanded rosters, new injury list rules and probably a developmental league.

"[Preseason] games are just not up to the standards of the NFL. We owe you more than that," he said to a fan questioning the high price of tickets.

But there is no thought of simply reducing the price of tickets for preseason games and keeping the current 4-16 game format.

"It wouldn't change the quality of the product," Goodell said. "The quality of the product is still something the fans don't want to see. The quality of the product is about seeing the players they want to see in meaningful games. That's where our focus is."

•He wants the union to agree to a rookie wage scale that would eliminate training camp holdouts and huge salary guarantees to unproven draft picks.

"I think our rookie compensation system is broken," Goodell said. "Its' been a source of negotiations we've had. I think our compensation system should reward the players for their performance on an NFL field. It's something I've heard from our players about. It's something we have to address in the collective bargaining agreement."

•He predicts better things to come for the Browns.

"I think what [Mike] Holmgren has brought to this organization is very positive. He's looking at every aspect of the organization and trying to improve it. I think we're going to see a vastly improved product this year," Goodell said.

Notepad: Cornerback Chris Roberson, who injured a leg defending a pass Wednesday, "won't be back anywhere in the next couple weeks," Eric Mangini said. The coach had no further update on the specifics of the injury. . . . Punter Dave Zastudil is expected back today after having his surgically repaired right knee re-examined.

Big Ten football championship game will debut in Indianapolis in 2011

The conference makes the obvious choice, but it is only a one-year pledge.

lucas-oil-stadium.jpgIndianapollis' Lucas Oil Stadium will host the first Big Ten Championship football game.

Sorry Cleveland - and Chicago, Detroit and Green Bay.

The Big Ten announced this evening that Indianapolis has been chosen as the proposed site for the first Big Ten Football Championship Game in December of 2011.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said at the league meetings earlier in the week in Chicago that the conference was likely to pick a site for one year, because there wasn't time to fully investigate the possibilities for a multi-year agreement.

Once he said that, Indy jumped to the front of the line, since the Big Ten already holds its basketball tournaments there.

Four other cities had expressed interest in hosting, and the Big Ten will have to decide whether it wants to rotate the title game or find a permanent home.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said he is in favor of playing the game indoors. Lucas Oil Stadium is one of the premier indoor football stadiums in the country.
