The dog days of summer have arrived, slowing the  fishing on most inland waters. Lake Erie walleye are still biting, though the best  fishing  has been far offshore. Yellow perch schools are spotty, with a lot of undersized fish. Muskies are biting on the Northern Ohio lakes, especially West Branch and Pymatuning.

Cleveland area

Walleye and steelhead fishing have been most productive about 12 to 15 miles offshore in 70-75 feet of water, but some walleye were being caught this week in 56 feet of water around the Cleveland Crib. Yellow perch are being caught in 38-39 feet of water off Wildwood Park and Lakewood's Gold Coast. A lot of sorting is needed because of a proliferation of small perch.

White bass are being caught around the east lighthouse in Cleveland Harbor. Fishermen are casting agitators, suspending a wiggle spoon or using a three-way rig with a leader tipped with a fly or single minnow to target bigger fish closer to the lake bottom.

Rock bass fishing around Cleveland Harbor has been very good on leeches and small rubber-leg jigs and plastic trailers. The biggest rock bass are being caught after dark. Some smallmouth and largemouth bass are being caught around harbor shoreline structure and weed beds along the riprap.

Central Lake Erie

Walleye fishing has been good in shallow 18- to 25-foot depths from the Huron River to Cranberry Creek while trolling Reef Runner minnow-style plugs and by drifting and casting weight-forward spinners and small spinner rigs, both tipped with nightcrawlers. Walleye are also being caught from Vermilion to Lorain in 19 to 25 feet. The best walleye fishing has been a couple of miles off the northwest corner of the Lorain sandbar, an area north of Vermilion.

Scattered schools of yellow perch have been reported all along the shoreline, with the Lorain Lighthouse a top spot, followed by Avon Point. Smallmouth bass fishing has been slow around the near-shore rock piles and humps.

In the deep water off Geneva, Ashtabula and Conneaut, walleye are being taken in 68 to 75 feet of water while trolling spoons or tandem-bladed spinner rigs and nightcrawlers. Walleye are being caught suspended at 40 to 50 feet. The perch fishing has been good in 30 to 50 feet of water northwest of Fairport Harbor and northwest of Ashtabula.

Inland lakes, reservoirs

Bass fishermen have been facing the dog days of summer, with bass heading to deeper water during the hot days. Some are being caught on topwater lures on the flats early and late in the day. During the day, the bass fishing has been best on the deep points and outside edges of deep weed beds.

Muskies have been reported caught from West Branch and Pymatuning lakes on large, shallow-running lures. Catfish are being caught on most lakes, with night fishing best.

Walleye are biting at Pymatuning, where anglers are trolling Hot-N-Tots and drifting with small spinner rigs tipped with nightcrawlers on the north end of the lake. The causeway is producing some crappies and channel cats, perch of all sizes and some nice bluegills and yellow perch. Anglers are also fishing the shallow bays for carp.

Some walleye are being taken at Mosquito Lake on the deeper, outside edges of weed beds by casting jigs tipped with minnows or nightcrawlers. Catfish are in the spotlight, including flathead catfish after dark.

Western Lake Erie

Walleye fishing has been slow, with many anglers heading to the Canadian side of the lake to fish west of Pelee Island. Some walleye are being caught around Ballast Island, the northeast corner of Middle Bass Island, northwest of West Sister Island, off Crane Creek and west and northwest of North Bass Island in open water.

Yellow perch are being caught northeast of Ballast Island and between Lakeside and Kelleys Island, the north bay of Kelleys Island and in the deeper waters on the east side of Kelleys Island Shoal.

Reporter Chet Fussman of Jacksonville.com has this message for Cleveland Cavaliers fans ---- Get over LeBron James.

Hey, Cleveland fans, GET OVER IT. Leading the league in whining is not a badge of honor. It's not like leading the league in wins.

James had played out his contract. He was a free agent, available to sign with any team of his choosing. James played seven years with the Cavaliers, and though the team failed to win a championship with its native son, he did more to raise the franchise's profile than any player in Cavs history.

Fussman called LeBron's departure tacky, and that he didn't do anything professional athletes haven't been doing for decades.

So move on, Cleveland fans. The Browns are about to open training camp with Jake Delhomme as their starting quarterback. Now that's something to be depressed about.

John Kasich gets advice from local sport fishing experts

Gubernatorial candidate John Kasich has 104 days until the fall election, and he recruited Lake Erie experts to tell him what is needed to improve sport fishing along Ohio’s North Coast.

john_kasich_ap.jpgRepublican candidate for Ohio governor John Kasich learned the Lake Erie walleye population has been in a slump in recent years during a meeting with the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association.
Port Clinton, Ohio — Gubernatorial candidate John Kasich has 104 days until the fall election, and he recruited Lake Erie experts to tell him what is needed to improve sport fishing along Ohio’s North Coast.

Meeting on Wednesday with members of the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association at The Pond, a local fisherman’s resort, the guides’ list of concerns seemed staggering.

"I have some knowledge of the area, but these people have spent a lifetime on the lake and do business up here," Kasich said. He may not have expected the earful he got from LECBA President Rick Unger and a handful of local fishing guides.

The Lake Erie walleye population has been in a slump in recent years, said the guides. They had a litany of water woes that have helped cause poor fish production, from invasive species to the Bayshore Power Plant killing young fish, open-water dumping of contaminated Maumee River dredge material, heavy phosphate loading from agricultural sources, fish-eating cormorant and commercial fishing abuses.

The fishing guides shared their worries about Asian carp and a movement to build wind turbines on productive Western Lake Erie fishing reefs. They said there is a need for a closed spring fishing season to protect spawning fish.

Kasich, a member of Congress for 18 years, said he had never been invited to the Port Clinton area, dubbed the Walleye Capitol of the World.

"But I know we can drive a lot of change," he said.

Out and about: The NRA National Smallbore 3-Position Championships run through Sunday at Camp Perry, the Ohio National Guard facility west of Port Clinton. . . . The Castalia Hatchery in Erie County is constructing a new trout production facility and will close the hatchery to tours and visitors through Sept. 11, except for lottery winners of trout fishing outings on Cold Creek. . . . Boaters and anglers at Buckeye Lake will find a renovated North Shore boat launch ramp with extra parking, a recently completed $625,000 project.

Lake and Trails camp: After an outstanding    turnout for its spring fishing camp, Lake and Trails Organization is taking reservations for the Youth Outdoor Camp on Sept. 30-Oct. 3. It is held at FFA Camp Muskingum on the shoreline of Leesville Lake in Carroll County. The shooting sports are in the spotlight at the fall camp. To reserve a spot or for information, e-mail Karen Metzger at Karenlakeandtrails.org.

Manage wild deer: The Quality Deer Management Association has a course from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at West Holmes High School in Millersburg to help farmers, landowners and hunters learn to reduce deer densities and build big bucks for hunters. To register, call 330-231-1965 or 419-308-8368. The course is free and lunch is provided.

Mercury on rise: Canadian researchers report mercury levels are on the rise in Lake Erie’s walleye after two decades of steady decline. Federal, provincial and University of Toronto researchers speculate the increased levels of mercury in fish have been provoked by invasive species, primarily zebra and quagga mussels and round gobies.

Women hunters increase: Far more men are hunters, but more women took up hunting in 2009, reports the National Sporting Goods Association. The ranks of female hunters jumped 5.4 percent

"The way to rebuild the Cavs is through trades and the draft. The Cavs did not want to overpay for Matt Barnes. I think that is a good thing. The best thing about the upcoming NBA 2K11's Michael Jordan challenge is an omission. When the game arrives on Oct. 5, NBA 2K11 will feature a 10-game "Jordan Challenge" that recreates Michael Jordan's most famous performances.

His most famous performances except for "The Shot."  There's the 69 points Jordan scored against the Cavaliers on March 28, 1990. There's Jordan's 63 points against the Boston Celtics on April 20, 1986 and there's his 47 points against the Bad Boys of Detroit on May 26, 1990.

But NBA2K11 is missing "The Shot." Here's the chance for many Cavaliers' fans to recreate our own history in stopping MJ from putting in that dagger on May 7, 1989 at the Richfield Coliseum, but 2K Sports drops the ball.

Asked why their game has no "Shot," 2K Sports' Jason Argent indicated it ended up on the cutting room floor. "There are so many amazing Jordan moments that it was very, very hard to choose, so we tried to pick the 10 we felt would be the most fun to play through," Argent said. "But with a legend like Mike, you can never really capture all the greatest moments"

NBA as entertainment; retiring No. 23; and Browns by position

Wrap up your work week by looking back at what Cleveland sports bloggers had to say about what the 2010 free agent frenzy means for the NBA, where Shaq should play, what the early schedule could mean for the Browns and more.

lebron-dwyane-horiz-jg.jpgView full sizeWould the NBA be better off if LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were still wearing different uniforms?

Cavaliers

LandLoyalty: "If the [NBA] is interested in transitioning into the entertainment business, then they are surely headed in the right direction. ... The NBA has greatly increased their relevancy and reach this off-season, but the question is whether it matches with their strategy. If, on the other hand, the league desires to remain in the forefront in terms of true sport, they will have to address some of the critical issues that are crippling the league in terms of salary structure and the collective bargaining agreement. Because a league revolving around a handful of effective teams full of the best competing against a couple dozen filler teams could easily degrade into the professional wrestling ranks as a sports-centric soap opera." » Read more

Cleveland Frowns: "A better question is, who in Cleveland wants to see that 23 hanging from the rafters? It's like the Art Modell Hall of Fame thing. LeBron had every right to leave town, but nobody has any right to be honored by having his jersey retired. We can forgive LeBron without having to ruin the feng shui in the house by putting his number up." » Read more

Cavs: the blog: "Getting a player like Matt Barnes without a superstar or anyone who an offense can be built around is putting the horse before the cart. Matt Barnes is a nice role player, but he's a role player. Overpaying him won't turn him into a player he's not. If the Cavs still had LeBron, or even had a guy capable of averaging 7-10 assists per game, then Matt Barnes would have been a nice pickup. They don't, and he wouldn't have been." » Read more

Stepien Rules: "As far as last season goes, Shaq did play well for a stretch, and who knows how things would've turned out for both him and the Cavaliers had he not gone down with that thumb injury late. But he did go down with that injury, and never really regained his form after that. As far as the Cavaliers go, I'd be fine with him playing out next season in Cleveland for that $2 million number, but if the Cavs overpay to keep Shaq here next season, that would be disappointing." » Read more

Browns

Cleveland Reboot: "Anyway, all of this 'talk' means one thing – the success of the 2010 Browns will largely be dictated by whether Delhomme can return to his past Pro Bowl form – or continue his long slide into oblivion. Although this appears to be a huge gamble – considering the Browns' tenuous state of improvement shown late last season – it is encouraging to think that Delhomme offers a huge upgrade over last year's available options." » Read more

WaitingForNextYear: "We so often hear about teams 'needing to learn how to win.' I think there's something to that. And I wonder if the core of this team got some lessons in that over those last four games last season. Yes, they got some help from the schedule makers, but during that stretch they finally looked like they knew what the game plan of Eric Mangini and Co. was. ... And here's the wrinkle: the first two games this year are against bottom-feeding Tampa Bay and Kansas City. There is, in my humble estimation, an actual realistic chance the Browns could be sitting at 2-0 heading into a week 3 road game in Baltimore." » Read more

European basketball star Chet "The Jet" Mason will host a weekend that will include a free basketball camp and charity basketball game to benefit youth just in time for the school year.

From 12-4 p.m. on Saturday, Mason will host a free basketball camp for boys and girls 8-17. Campers will receive free lunch and a tee shirt. The camp will take place at the Zelma George Rec Center at 3155 MLK Blvd in Cleveland.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday at Zelma George, Mason will play in a charity basketball game, which will include former University of Akron stars Dru Joyce Jr. and Romeo Travis. It's a school supply fund raiser. Bring in any type of school supply (notebooks, pencils, pens, etc) to enter for the game.

Mason, who starred at Cleveland South High School, has put on this event for four years.

"I do this because if I don't, who will," Mason said. "There are people doing some things politically but the kids listen more to me than they would the council person. I come from the same place as many of these kids. I come from the same rec center, and same schools as they do."

Mason, who starred at Cleveland South and Miami (Ohio), led Siroki Eronet to the  Bosnian Cup national men's basketball championship two months ago. Mason was also named the Most Valuable Player of the finals and he was the MVP during the regular season.

During the regular season, Mason was the first American to win the MVP of the Adriatic League, and he won the regular season MVP in the Bosnian National League.

Several local fans have started a petition for signatures that they will present to the Cavaliers, with the hope the team gives Mason a shot during training camp this fall.

"That's flattering," Mason said. "It's a wonderful feeling that people would do something like that. But I don't expect to get a call from the Cavs. I expect to go back overseas."

Cleveland Cavaliers sign guard-forward Christian Eyenga

Deal is for two years with team options for years three and four.

christian-eyenga.jpgChristian Eyenga has signed with the Cavaliers.

Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard/forward Christian Eyenga to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today.

The deal is a for two years and about $2 million guaranteed, with team options in years three and four. Because he was a first-round draft pick in 2009, that money does not come out of the Cavaliers' mid-level exception, which still leaves them a $5.7 million slot to spend in free agency.

Eyenga, 21, was the Cavaliers' first-round selection (30th overall) in the 2009 NBA Draft. He averaged 3.9 points on .561 shooting and 2.0 rebounds in 12.0 minutes in 29 regular-season games during the 2009-10 season with DKV Joventut Badalona of the Spanish League.

The Spanish League is widely regarded as the second-best domestic league in the world behind the NBA. In 11 EuroCup games, the 6-foot-5 guard/forward posted averages of 3.4 points on .444 shooting and 1.2 rebounds in 9.7 minutes per game.

“We’re looking forward to having Christian continue his development on the court here with Coach Scott and our team,” said Cavs general manager Chris Grant in a statement. “He has worked hard, and we were very encouraged by his recent performance in summer league.”

A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eyenga most recently played in all five games of the 2010 NBA Summer League with the Cavaliers, reaching double figures in each of the games. In five games (all starts), he averaged 11.4 points on .435 shooting, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 block in 29.2 minutes per game.

“I am happy to be here in Cleveland and excited to play with the Cavaliers this season,” Eyenga said in the statement release by the Cavs. “This is a great opportunity for me and I look forward to playing for Coach (Byron) Scott and learning from him, our coaches and my teammates.”

LeBron James gets his freedom, Howard Bryant writes

lbjad.jpgLeBron James

Like another famous Howard, Howard Bryant of ESPN tells it like it is in his column on LeBron James.

Bryant writes how the media, owner Dan Gilbert and even the fans are to blame for the creation of LeBron James and how things worked out when he made his announcement to play for the Miami Heat earlier this month.

Bryant also writes how despite the similarities between LeBron and many of the all-time greats before him, LeBron is different in several ways.

What James embodies is the ultimate victory for Marvin Miller -- the revolutionary director of the Major League Baseball Players Association from 1966-82 -- and the complete emancipation of athletes in team sports from the paternalistic and condescending structure that dominated the history of American professional sports. James is the talent, the one who moves the needle. His presence creates the value. The team, the league, the press and media, and the fans derive their power from him, and not -- as the game had always wanted athletes to believe -- the other way around.

James has long telegraphed this, with his aloofness toward Cleveland, but no one was listening. We were too busy thinking about what he was going to do for us. We were too busy being witnesses to a phenomenon we did not understand -- until now.

Bryant points out how LeBron always came off as being different, and not in the superstar kind of way. He was always curiously detached as a Cavalier. LeBron, writes Bryant, was petulant after postseason losses, refusing to shake hands with his opponents, a suggestion that he had no real equal.

Now that he has left, Gilbert has telegraphed his fatal servitude with petulance of his own, accusing James of quitting in an infamous letter to fans. And Gilbert had previously acquiesced to James' entourage, allowing James to control the travel schedule of the team. The hype and narrative suggested James was of Ohio, of Akron, of Cleveland. There was an easy storyline that was being written for him, Joe Mauer style, that the local kid was making good in his backyard but with one critical and humongous exception: James never, ever truly played along.

Also, writes Howard, James never vocally or physically committed to Cleveland, or the organization, by signing a contract that would defuse the issue of his suspect loyalties. Nor, in the daily crush of victories and defeats, did James ever offer the kind of support that suggested he was one of 12 players.

Talent does that. It makes you different from the rest. James would never blend in because he's simply too good. The problem was that James believed his talent made him less accountable when things did not go Cleveland's way. He put the organization on the defensive, consistently asking it what it would do for him, even though the team made acquisitions following its 2007 Finals appearance and won 127 games over two seasons.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- This is a daily briefing of the Indians' 2010 regular season. The Tribe plays host to the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at Progressive Field.

Pitching matchup: Indians RHP Fausto Carmona (9-7, 3.65 ERA) vs. Rays RHP Jeff Niemann (8-2, 2.92).

Pregame notes:

Roster moves: The Indians activated right fielder Shin-Soo Choo today and placed lefty Aaron Laffey on the 15-day disabled list.

Laffey has shoulder fatigue. His DL is retroactive to July 20.

Choo was placed on the 15-day DL on July 4 after injuring his right thumb while attempting to make a diving catch the previous night against Oakland. Choo and the Indians initially feared he might miss 6-8 weeks because of a torn ligament.

Choo is batting .286 (86-for-301) with 48 runs, 14 doubles, two triples, 13 homers and 43 RBI in 78 games.  He has stolen 12 bases and ranks among American League leaders in walks (48), on-base percentage (.390) and outfield assists (six).

In three rehab games for Class AA Akron beginning July 19, Choo was 1-for-11 with a run.

Choo will bat third tonight. Rookie catcher Carlos Santana moved into the cleanup spot. Santana only has batted third or fourth since his promotion from Class AAA Columbus last month.

Laffey is 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 25 games (five starts). In 50 2/3 innings, he has allowed 57 hits, walked 28 and struck out 27.  Since moving to the rotation on June 25, he is 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA.

In Laffey's most recent outing, July 19 at Minnesota, he earned the victory. He gave up one unearned run on five hits in five innings. But he did it with smoke and mirrors, the velocity of his fastball having dipped into the mid-80s.

This marks Laffey's second career stint on the major-league DL.

Akron, OH- ----  Masters champion Phil Mickelson will return to Northern Ohio in two weeks for the 18th consecutive year to compete in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, tournament officials today announced.  Mickelson, who officially committed to the event today, has competed at Firestone Country Club every year since 1992 and will return to action for the first time on the PGA TOUR since a T48 at the British Open last week.  Padraig Harrington, who finished T2 three-shots behind Tiger Woods in 2009, also announced his intentions to compete Friday.  The 2010 Bridgestone Invitational will again be contested at Firestone Country Club’s South Course, August 3-8.

“Phil Mickelson is one of the most popular figures in all of sports and we are thrilled he will again compete here in Akron,” said Bridgestone Invitational Executive Director Donald Padgett III.  “We’ve had a number of commitments from the world’s best players, Mickelson included, and are confident one of the strongest fields of the season will again gather here at Firestone and put on an entertaining week of competition for golf fans throughout our region and around the country.”

No stranger to the South Course at Firestone Country Club, Mickelson has compiled an impressive track record over the years in Akron.  One of only five players to compete in all 11 editions of the Bridgestone Invitational, Mickelson has collected five top 10s with his best result a runner-up finish in 1999.  He finished T58 in 2009.  Though he has never won the Bridgestone Invitational since it became a World Golf Championships event in 1999, Mickelson has recorded a victory at Firestone Country Club’s South Course, winning the 1996 World Series of Golf.

One of only five players with multiple victories in World Golf Championships events along with Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy and Tiger Woods, Mickelson claimed two of the four World Golf Championships events in 2009, notching one-stroke victories at both the CA Championship and the HSBC Champions.  Mickelson claimed the third green jacket of his career in April, but needs a second victory to extend his streak of consecutive seasons with multiple victories to seven.

Players not already qualified for the Bridgestone Invitational have just two more weeks of competition, including this week’s RBC Canadian Open on the PGA TOUR, to earn a spot in the field in Akron.  The field will again include playing members of the last named Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup teams, winners of tournaments from around the world since the 2009 Bridgestone Invitational whose victories are considered official and have an Official World Golf Ranking strength of field rating of 115, and the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking as of Monday, July 26 and Monday, August 2.

Browns Comment of the Day: Not all about wins for Mangini

"How the team looks and plays will have as much bearing as the number of wins. It's going to be dependent on the quarterback play. If Delhomme can come back strong, I think this team has a shot to really improve. If the quarterbacks stink but the running game looks good, can you blame Mangini? Both quarterbacks were Holmgren's picks." - cunxtyr

'Deadliest Catch' star Hillstrand enjoys a day of Lake Erie walleye fishing

Johnathon Hillstrand is an Alaskan cowboy who rides the waves of the Bering Sea, the skipper of the now-famous Time Bandit commercial fishing boat seen on the Discovery television series, "Deadliest Catch."

Johnathan Hillstrand 2.jpgJohnathan Hlilstrand, star of the "Deadliest Catch" television show on Discovery, celebrates catching his first Lake Erie walleye on Monday with Fishfull Thinking first mate Bob Swiney Jr.

Johnathon Hillstrand is an Alaskan cowboy riding the waves of the Bering Sea, the skipper of the now-famous Time Bandit commercial fishing boat seen on the Discovery television series, "Deadliest Catch."

Wearing torn jeans, cowboy boots and a black baseball cap emblazoned with his boat's name, Hillstrand, 47, was ready to tackle Lake Erie on Monday with Chagrin River fishing guide Bob Swiney.

Hillstrand was chasing walleye with winners of a charity contest at the recent Painesville Party in the Park, where he appeared for three days.

Big northwest winds kicked up 5- to 6-foot waves, but Swiney's 33-foot charter boat, Fishfull Thinking, could tame them. The crew was facing a slow 20-mile journey to a fishing hot spot.

"Hey, it's pretty rough out here," said Hillstrand, as we plowed through Lake Erie waves.

Not like the 40- to 50-foot waves Hillstrand commonly faces in the Bering Sea. Or the rare 100-foot waves Hillstrand says makes the Time Bandit ride like a washing machine.

"In Alaska, I'm in a 113-foot boat," he said. "Today, we're in a 33-footer. Big difference."

Hillstrand and his brother, Andy, 46, have been carrying Discovery camera crews on their boat for five seasons.

"When they asked us to do the show the first season, we said no," Hillstrand said. "They asked Andy again the next season, and he agreed. He wanted to document our trips, to have something we could show our grand kids some day.

"A couple of years later, the show's a No. 1 hit and I'm making appearances in places like Ohio. They sold all 5,000 raffle tickets at $2 apiece for the Painesville Community Improvement Corporation, and I got to go walleye fishing.

"When I began commercial fishing, I lived like a rock star," he said, with a laugh. "We were young and if you worked hard, you could make $100,000 out there for 11 months work. I had limos and stayed in presidential suites. I wrecked two trucks without insurance.

"And I don't regret a thing."

The toughest part of the job is spending so many days at sea.

"On 'Deadliest Catch' it looks glamorous and exciting," he said. "It's really pretty miserable out there. If you're a sensitive kind of guy, you probably won't make it. You've got to be a little crazy."

Crazy enough to plow through big waves in 36-degree sea water from October through March, the prime time for catching blue king crab, red king crab and snow crab. It's a dangerous time. His boat rescued fisherman Josh White three years ago, saving his life after he was tossed overboard from another commercial boat

Hillstrand admits the crew members are hard on one another. He didn't ease up on Monday's trip sponsors - Chris Ballo of Ballo Construction and Scott Muhorsky of Climate Control Excellence - when queasiness kept them from handling a fishing rod. Everyone else caught walleye, including trip winners James Nagy of Willoughby, Jay Nagy of Perry and Melissa Lundell of Fairport Harbor.

Commercial fishing is Hillstrand's business. Sport fishing is his passion and there is no better place to fish than Homer and Cook Inlet in Alaska.

Hillstrand caught a 640-pound halibut a few years ago, subduing it with his .45 caliber handgun. Shooting the fish disqualified it as a state record.

"I didn't have to (shoot it)," he said, laughing. "I just love shooting big fish."

The Hillstrand brothers and their crew spend months on the water, visiting the Dutch Harbor docks only to drop off their catch.

"We've got a tight crew," he said. "You're only as good as your weakest guy. If a guy gets hurt, the whole crew has to come in. I don't like to take green guys out. We had a guy this year, who begged me for three years to join our crew. On the trip, he begged me the whole time to let him go home. He said being out there was like a prison sentence.

"Being away from home for months at a time is difficult for the crew, and the camera guys. They put two camera men on the boat, and one is always a veteran. Nine times out of 10, the rookie camera guy ends up sitting in my wheel house, throwing up, while the other guy does all of the work.

"I've got about four or five years of crabbing left in me," said Hillstrand. "The best day of any trip is  the day you go home. The last hour to Dutch Harbor is always the longest hour of the trip. When you finally see Dutch Harbor, the cell phones start working. If you've got a good catch, you'll soon have a big check in hand."

St. Edward junior wrestler won a Cadet national championship, and Tim Fox of Mogadore Field and Mike Labry of Twinsburg placed second Friday at the Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D.

Walz won the 215-pound final, 2-0, 1-4, 1-0, against Michigan's Adam Coon, who won the Cadet Greco-Roman title on Monday.

"This is the first huge tournament I've ever won," Walz, who went 0-2 at the state high school tournament in March, said in a phone interview. "It's an unbelievable feeling."

Walz, 16, of Cleveland, took the lead in the first and third periods by powering his way through a high-crotch maneuver, grabbing both legs and lifting and driving Coon to the mat. The decisive third-period takedown followed a delicate battle for position near the edge and Coon nearly scored a push-out.

"That was a great move. That was close," St. Edward coach Greg Urbas said in a phone interview. "Ty did a great job battling for position on his feet and controlling ties. He hit two amazing high crotches."

Walz was 25-14 as a sophomore at St. Edward this year and the only tournament he won was the sectional. He won eight matches at Fargo, three by pin.

"I've gotten so much better," Walz said.

Labry lost to Illinois' Ben Whitford, 7-1, 3-1, at 125 pounds. Labry won nine matches to reach the finals, losing just two periods along the way. Whitford also is a Greco-Roman champ. Fox lost the 140-pound final to Illinois' Brian Murphy, 3-1, 3-0. Fox led Team Ohio with four pins.

Also achieving All-America status were Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy's Nathan Tomasello, third at 98 pounds, and St. Edward's Domenic Abounader, fifth at 160.

The Junior freestyle finals are Saturday.
