Cleveland Browns vs. Baltimore Ravens: Tony Grossi's take on the Browns' stats

Mike Brown has his finest day as a Brown. Colt McCoy struggles.

colt-mccoy3.JPGQuarterback Colt McCoy had his worst day as a Brown, going with 149 yards passing, no touchdowns and three interceptions.

Offense

They outgained their opponent (280 yards to 258) and were better on third downs (seven of 11). But Colt McCoy threw three interceptions and Mohamed Massaquoi lost a fumble. McCoy probably was due for a game like this. Having Peyton Hillis get dinged early didn't help. Massaquoi's trick TD pass to Brian Robiskie was sweet.

Bottom line: Gave up 10 points -- perhaps 13 -- on turnovers.

Defense

Ray Rice didn't kill them. Anquan Boldin didn't kill them. Joe Flacco, who made some good throws, didn't kill them with his arm. The most damaging play was a Flacco scramble when he squirmed free from Marcus Benard for 13 yards on the first series of second half. He hit Derrick Mason on the next play for the final touchdown.

Bottom line: Nothing really awful here today.

Special teams

Was the onside kick try to open the second half while down by three points a good play? No. Why not? It didn't work. Phil Dawson's kick bounded out of bounds before it went 10 yards and led to a touchdown. Josh Cribbs had two of his longest returns of the season. Because of it, Baltimore started kicking away and Browns won average drive start by a couple.

Bottom line: Can't predict how that ball bounces.

Coaching

The defensive mentality took over on the last drive of the first half when the Browns were content to kick a field goal rather than run a hurry-up and attack the end zone. Then they open second half with onside kick.

Bottom line: No consistency in what they demand of their team.

KEY STATS

1. Mike Bell (27 yards rushing, 48 yards receiving): With Peyton Hillis dinged up early, Mike Bell had his finest game as a Brown.

2. Ed Reed (2 interceptions): Browns-killer Ed Reed now has 12 career interceptions against Browns -- most against any team. He also dinged Hillis.

3. Joe Flacco (12-19, 102 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT): Not a prolific passing day, but Joe Flacco's strong arm was evident on many throws.

4. Mohamed Massaquoi (14 receiving yards): Adjusting to the ball, defending an underthrown one, has not been one of Mohamed Massaquoi's strong suits.
