Quarterback Seneca Wallace, second on the depth chart behind Jake Delhomme, was thrilled to hear coach Eric Mangini say last week that he’ll use both quarterbacks this season.
“That’s the first time I heard that,” Wallace said Thursday. “It’s good for me just being on the field. Both of us on the field, it can be dangerous, and obviously with Josh Cribbs here and having all three of us on the field it can be great.
“So hopefully he sticks to his word and we can continue to get better out here and I can be on the field.”
Wallace, acquired in a trade with Seattle, said using both quarterbacks can work.
“Jake’s obviously been around a long time. Obviously I’ve got some athletic ability and I can move around. They can put me in different spots, kind of the same way they used Josh last year and he’s been great at it. Having us all on the field at the same time, it will be tough for defenses to line up for that.”
Wallace said Mangini hasn’t talked to him about how or when he’ll use both quarterbacks.
“We’ll see what happens once the season starts,” Wallace said.
When Wallace and Cribbs are used together, it’s called the Cyclone package, after the nickname for Wallace’s alma mater, Iowa State.
Wallace said it’s been challenging learning the New England Patriots-style offense the Browns are running.
“It’s like learning Spanish overnight,” he said. “I get hard on myself because I always want things to be perfect. Coming into new system, it’s going to take awhile.”
Warfield steps down: Hall of Fame receiver Paul Warfield, who has served as the Browns’ senior adviser to the general manager since 2004, has decided to retire from the team’s front office. That’s two Hall of Famers gone from the front office in recent days. Last week, Jim Brown had his title of executive adviser removed, but will remain active with the club in an unofficial capacity.
Warfield also worked for the Browns from 1981 to ’87 as director of player relations. His main responsibilities as senior adviser included college scouting, talent evaluation and special projects.
The Browns promoted former Philadelphia Eagles scout John Spytek to director of college scouting. Spytek spent the past five seasons with Philadelphia as a scout under Browns GM Tom Heckert.
The Browns reassigned former director of college scouting Pat Roberts to senior national scout. It’s similar to the position he held with the Browns from 2005 to ’08.
McDonald impresses: Mangini praised cornerback Brandon McDonald, who is trying to rebound from an off year.
“He was one of our off-season award winners last week,” Mangini said. “He’s had a really good camp, similar to the type of camp that Brian Robiskie has had and that’s a positive thing.”
Two rookie safeties?
Mangini said he’s open to starting two rookie safeties in T.J. Ward and Larry Asante.
“If they’re the best guys, you may take some lumps early because they are rookies, but typically those guys continue to move up and excel.”
Roster moves: The Browns signed receiver James Robinson and waived receiver Dion Morton. Signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie last year out of Butler County (Kan.) Community College, Robinson spent time on Miami’s practice squad last year, as well as the Browns’ and Redskins’.
