Jose Mesa had 103 saves for the Indians during his career in Cleveland.Detroit -- Pitcher Kerry Wood entered the ninth at Comerica Park in Detroit last night, trying to preserve a victory for starter Jake Westbrook. He got two quick outs, then surrendered an RBI single that cut the Tribe's lead over the Tigers to 3-2.
But he managed to retire the No. 9 hitter for the final out and collect his third save of the season, and the 57th of his career.
Such is the life of a closer in the big leagues.
Since the advent of the position, the Indians have had some good ones, some bad ones and some mediocre ones. It's not a job for the faint of heart, and sometimes, even watching a closer is no job for the faint of heart.
