AAA Columbus Clippers
Bisons 3, Clippers 1 Buffalo starter Ramon Ortiz (2-3) allowed the Clippers' only two hits while going the distance in a victory over host Columbus in the International League on Friday. Fernando Martinez drove in two runs with a home run in the second inning and a single in the sixth for Buffalo. Jared Goedert drove in Columbus' only run with a single in the fourth inning. Yohan Pino (8-6) took the loss.
Notes: LHP David Huff is 6-0 with a 3.80 ERA since being sent to Columbus by the Indians, but has allowed 51 hits in 42 2/3 innings....Going into Friday night's game, Huff's six wins are tied for the most in all of the minor leagues since June 24....1B Matt McBride was 4-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI in his Columbus debut on Thursday. Going into Friday night's game, he was on a 10-game hitting steak counting his last nine games at Class AA Akron, going 17-for-38 (.447) with six doubles, three homers and 14 RBI. McBride was 36-for-99 (.364) with 13 homers, 11 doubles, 32 RBI and an .869 slugging percentage in his last 26 games with the Aeros....LF Jordan Brown (.312) was 17-for-47 (.362) with four doubles, two homers and 17 RBI in his last 11 games....Catcher Lou Marson (.204) was 11-for-33 (.333) with three doubles, one homer and eight RBI in his last 10 games.
AA Akron Aeros
Aeros 6, Phillies 0 Kelvin De La Cruz threw six shutout innings, and Akron won for the 12th time in 13 games at Canal Park with an Eastern League victory over Reading, Pa.
Notes: RHP Alex White (6-4, 1.49) is 4-1 with a 1.03 ERA in his last seven starts, striking out 37 and walking five in 43 2/3 innings. He has not allowed a home run in his last 38 innings, and has picked up his strikeout pace, fanning 29 in 25 1/3 innings over his last four starts. White was the Indians' first pick in the 2009 draft. Pitching professionally for the first time, he began the season at Kinston, going 2-3 with a 2.86 ERA....Going into Friday night's game, 1B Beau Mills (.240) was 14-for-42 (.333) with six doubles, one triple, one homer and 10 RBI in his last 10 games....2B Jason Kipnis (.323) was batting .420 (21-for-50) with five doubles, one triple and two homers in his last 12 games....3B Lonnie Chisenhall (.277) was 13-for-40 (.325) with one double, one triple, two homers and 10 RBI in his last 10 games.
Advanced A Kinston Indians
Indians 4, Blue Rocks 0 Kinston starter Joe Gardner allowed two hits in five shutout innings to pick up his ninth win as Kinston shut out host Wilmington, Del., for the second straight night. Gardner (9-5, 2.97) is now second in the Carolina League in wins, trailing only his teammate T.J. McFarland.
Notes: LHP T.J. House (4-8, 3.93) is 2-0 in his last two games, allowing one run on three hits and three walks in 12 innings, and fanning nine....RH Austin Adams is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in six games (five starts) since being promoted from Lake County. In 26 2/3 innings, he's struck out 25, walked seven and given up 23 hits....Going into Friday night's game, RHP Cory Burns (0-1, 18 saves, 2.19) was a combined 0-1 with 30 saves and a 2.23 ERA this season at Kinston and Lake County, striking out 62 and walking 12 in 40 1/3 innings, and yielding just one homer....1B-3B Jeremie Tice (.309) was batting .388 (19-for-49) in his last 12 games....Catcher Chun Chen (.298) was 9-for-23 (.391) with three doubles, one homer and seven RBI in his last seven games....SS Ron Rivas was 8-for-22 (.364) with five walks in his last eight games....IF-DH Karexon Sanchez (.255) was leading the Carolina League with 58 walks.
A Lake County Captains
Whitecaps 1, Captains 0 Lake County starter Brett Brach (2-6) allowed three hits and one run in seven innings but could not keep the Captains from suffering their fifth straight loss in a Midwest League game at Classic Park. West Michigan's Hernan Perez hit his third home run of the season for the only run of game. Nick Sarianides followed Brach and threw a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and walking one. Antwonie Hubbard threw a scoreless ninth inning for the Captains, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Notes: LHP Matt Packer (8-5, 1.60) is 3-2 with an 0.97 ERA in his last seven starts. In 46 1/3 innings, he's struck out 46, walked seven and allowed 33 hits (one home run). Packer, leading the Midwest League in ERA, has made 13 starts after beginning the season with 11 relief outings. In 95 2/3 innings, he's struck out 92, walked 13 and given up 77 hits (four homers)....Going into Friday night's game, IF Adam Abraham (.236) was 17-for-39 (.436) with five doubles, five home runs and 16 RBI in his last 10 games....OF Greg Folgia (.227) was 14-for-38 (.368) with three doubles, two homers and 10 RBI in his last 10 games....OF Delvi Cid (.238) was leading the Midwest League with 49 stolen bases (in 58 attempts).
A Mahoning Valley Scrappers
Jammers 5, Scrappers 0 Ryan Fisher drove in two runs and four Jamestown (N.Y.) pitchers held Mahoning Valley to five hits and no runs as the visiting Scrappers fell in a New York-Penn League game. Alex Kaminsky suffered his third loss of the season for the Scrappers, lasting four innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out six.
Notes: RHP Owen Dew (1-2, 2.70) is 0-1 despite a 1.80 ERA in his last three starts. In 15 innings, he's allowed just 10 hits and one walk....Since being moved to the bullpen, RHP Casey Gaynor (3-1, 5.40) is 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA in nine games, spanning 18 innings....Going into Friday night's game, OF Jonathan Burnette was leading the Scrappers with a .280 batting average, despite going 0-for-17 in his last five games....2B Daniel DeGeorge was right behind at .279, including 6-of-10 in his last three games.
Independent Lake Erie Crushers
Wild Things 6, Crushers 2 Eric Stephens hit a grand slam against Lake Erie rookie Jon Durket to lead host Washington, Pa. Eddie Tisdale and Dom Duggan drove in runs for the Crushers in Frontier League action.
Notes: Going into Friday night's game, RH relief pitcher Jeff Cinadr was 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA and three saves in 42 1/3 innings over 24 games, striking out 30 while allowing nine walks and 32 hits....The Crushers had lost their last five games. In their last 11 games, they had won just once, scoring 2.2 runs per game.
