Cleveland Browns built to withstand latest off-field crisis: Bud Shaw

$

Owner Jimmy Haslam's issues shouldn't affect the Cleveland Browns on the field, unlike the sale of the team by Randy Lerner last year.

bud-banner.jpg View full size The presence of Joe Banner in the front office of the Cleveland Browns should allow the team to function normally, even if Jimmy Haslam is forced to spend a lot of time in Tennessee dealing with his legal issues.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Bless their tortured souls, sports fans in this town are accustomed to embracing small consolations in the wake of faith-shaking events.

Art Modell ran an end-around to Baltimore, but, hey, we kept the name and colors. So what if elsewhere they have become synonymous with pathetic football. Here, they are considered iconic connections to slumbering glory days.

The most recent example came when LeBron James left town and people found some odd solace in owner Dan Gilbert putting the maloika on him.

How'd that work out?

The latest search for a silver lining in the playbook comes as draft week kicks off in Berea. And it brings the same amount of hopeful rationalization, albeit a more tangible one.

The NFL Draft drumroll has consistently ranked as the happiest time for Browns fans since 1999, but this period comes with news of an FBI/IRS raid on Jimmy Haslam's company and the unsealing of a disturbing affidavit.

The first trucking company has filed suit against Pilot Flying J in response to the details of the affidavit. More will follow.

The consolation for Browns fans: Sure, it sounds ominous. But Haslam's issues shouldn't affect the Browns on the field in 2013, certainly not to the extent that Randy Lerner's selling of the team did last year.

The pending ownership change was felt in the locker room, where everyone knows if it quacks like a lame duck, it's a lame duck.

Even the greenest of players knows the drill: New coaches bring in new schemes and different talent to fit them; new general managers want their own coach; new owners want their own GMs and team presidents.

For now, coach Rob Chudzinski and offensive coordinator Norv Turner aren't going anywhere. CEO Joe Banner has probably already logged more time in the office than Mike Holmgren did in a full season. The Browns are better built to handle this storm, provided it doesn't ramp up quickly and enter the category of the one that blew Dorothy and Toto to Oz.

It's a narrow view of the current events, but it's the most hopeful one for a fan base that can pretty much claim to have seen in all since 1999 -- "all" consisting of six head coaches, two Baltimore Super Bowls and now this.

For this issue to outrank "The Decision" as a gut punch -- "The Move" will always stand alone -- Haslam would have to be asked to step aside and then sell his team.

Don't be fooled by Haslam's calm manner in front of the cameras. This is serious, if not the first shift in a coming sea change (should he be found guilty).

Even if the owner is as innocent as he claims, remember the appeal he carried with him into town centered on his business acumen and his laser attention to detail after a decade of Lerner's reluctant ownership.

Pleading ignorance in a rebate scam calls that into question and frames every decision he has made in Berea to date and all the ones to come. He was supposed to be the hands-on owner Lerner wasn't, bringing buckets of sweat equity to the task.

That -- and enforced accountability throughout the organization -- were supposedly what made Pilot Flying J such a success after all.

Haslam's decision to hire the same attorney who represented former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo in a fraud case might well be coincidental. And it might not. That case didn't end well for DeBartolo, who was suspended by the league after pleading guilty.

We're a long way from that. But if the scenario playing out is really happening and it's not a plot change in the upcoming movie about the Browns, the "woe is us" attitude former General Manager Phil Savage complained about is justified.

In the meantime, it's draft week.

Haslam plans to be here Thursday.

We won't be asking if you know where your owner is, just whether your owner has his lawyer on speed dial.

So we have that going for us.

The Cleveland Indians, who took two of three from the White Sox at Progressive Field earlier this month, play three games in Chicago.

When: Monday through Wednesday.

Where: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago.

TV/radio: SportsTime Ohio; WTAM AM/1100 will do series, WMMS FM/100.7 will air games Monday and Tuesday.

Season series: The Indians lead the White Sox, 2-1. Overall, White Sox lead, 1,047-1,002.

Pitching matchups: RHP Justin Masterson (3-1, 1.67 ERA) vs. RHP Dylan Axelrod (0-1, 4.70) Monday night at 8:10; RHP Zach McAllister (3-1, 1.67) vs. LHP Jose Quintana (1-0, 2.50) Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. and RHP Corey Kluber (1-0, 1.80) vs. LHP Chris Sale (1-2, 4.50) Wednesday at 2:10 p.m.

Indians update: They took two out of three against Chicago during the first homestand of the season as Masterson and McAllister won consecutive starts. They're 2-1 on this 10-game trip. Nick Swisher is hitting .333 (3-for-9) against his old club, while Mark Reynolds has five RBI.

White Sox update: Paul Konerko, who always hits the Indians, already has a game-winning homer and three RBI against them. Quintana pitched seven scoreless innings in Cleveland against McAllister, but all it was worth was a no-decision. The Tribe ripped Sale for eight runs on eight hits in 41/3 innings.

Disabled list: Indians -- RHP Brett Myers (right elbow/forearm), CF Michael Bourn (right index finger), C Lou Marson (neck), RHP Josh Tomlin (right elbow), RHP Frank Herrmann (right elbow) and RHP Blake Wood (right elbow) are on the disabled list. Next: The Indians visit Kansas City for a four-game series starting Friday.

Another tumble for Asdrubal Cabrera: Cleveland Indians chatter

Mired in a slump, Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera injured his wrist Saturday night and was unable to play on Sunday.

Clubhouse confidential: How bad a start to the 2013 season has it been for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera?

Not only is he in a 7-for-47 slump, but he also slipped down the dugout steps about 10 minutes before Saturday night's game against the Astros and bruised his left wrist. Cabrera played the first inning and then took himself out of the lineup.

"Unbelievable," said Cabrera, who did not play Sunday. "I thought I broke my wrist. I thought it was really hurt."

X-rays were negative and Cabrera told manager Terry Francona on Sunday that he could play in Monday's series opener against Chicago.

Boxers or briefs? Asked if the length of the Indians' current trip, 10 games in 11 days, made things difficult, manager Terry Francona said: "As long as I've got enough underwear, I'm fine. We go where they tell us to go."

Stat of the day: Mark Reynolds, with 17 RBI in the Tribe's first 16 games, is tied with Grady Sizemore for the sixth-hottest RBI start in team history. Manny Ramirez is No. 1 with 25 RBI in the first 16 games of the 1999 season.

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and Mike Brown met Sunday night.

cavs-brown.jpg View full size Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown could be on his way to rejoining the team.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers appear to be progressing in their pursuit of former coach Mike Brown as multiple media outlets reported that Brown had dinner on Sunday with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who fired him in 2010. WKYC Channel 3 was first to report the meeting.

Messages left for Brown, Gilbert and Brown's agent, Warren LeGarie, were not returned.

Brown is the first candidate to meet with Gilbert since the team fired Byron Scott on Thursday.

Brown told The Plain Dealer on Thursday that he was in no rush to return to coaching since being fired by the Los Angeles Lakers after one season and five games, but he said if the Cavs called he would listen.

Two longtime NBA insiders told The Plain Dealer on Friday that Brown had emerged as the team's top candidate and that the team might move quickly to hire him before another team does.

ESPN.com reported on Sunday night that the Cavs had reached out to Phil Jackson to see if he'd be interested in their coaching vacancy. Gilbert talked to Jackson in 2005 before he hired Brown. A call from The Plain Dealer to Jackson's agent, Todd Musburger, on Friday was not returned.

Kent State lineman Josh Klein hopes to hear name in NFL Draft

Kent State lineman Josh Klein has the versatility many NFL teams covet and was part of a productive rushing attack with the Golden Flashes in 2012.

macdraft-fisher.jpg View full size Central Michigan's Eric Fisher is expected to be one of the first players selected in Thursday's NFL Draft.

CLEVELAND, Ohio --As usual, the NFL Draft pickings are slim this season out of the Mid-American Conference, but to quote the late Spencer Tracy, "what's there is choice."

The possibility is there for Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher to be taken first in the draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, and he's projected to be taken no later than fifth overall. Yet another MAC offensive lineman, Kent State's Brian Winters, is projected to be a second- or third-round choice. Both of those players have been heavily discussed.

But there is a third lineman in the mix. Josh Klein from Kent is probably a late-round choice, but almost sure to hear his name called just the same.

"It's been a lot of teams interested," Klein said. "A lot of teams calling me, a lot of teams at the pro day were excited about what I did, so that really helped my stock."

As a senior, the 6-3, 310-pound guard played beside the more celebrated Winters, but drew equal attention paving the way for KSU's two 1,000-yard rushers in Trayion Durham and Dri Archer.

Over his four seasons with the Golden Flashes, Klein played all five positions on the offensive line. He now finds that versatility has drawn the interest of NFL teams.

"I'm pretty familiar with offensive line play, as a whole," Klein said recently from his home in suburban Cincinnati. "So that helps me out a lot. It shows my versatility. A lot of teams seem to be looking at me to be a swingman between center or guard, or to just be a center."

With NFL rosters about half the size of a college roster, players with versatility become major assets. And that holds particularly true for linemen.

"I've had private workouts with the Patriots, the Jets, the Titans and the Colts after pro day," Klein said last week. "I have visited Kansas City a few weeks ago, then I was in Oakland, and this week I worked out for the Bengals. Kansas City was cool, a good experience, and I really enjoyed it."

It wasn't until Kent moved Klein and Winters side by side in the middle of their junior year that Kent's offense really began to take on its ground-plowing personality. Before that, Klein filled in wherever he was needed.

And early in his career, Klein was even in the middle.

"My first snaps in college, my redshirt freshman year, were at center," Klein said. "I was recruited to Kent to play center. But I learned the other positions pretty fast, so they moved me around. I was always the emergency backup at center, and the coaches always told me center was my natural position. So center is primarily what some teams are looking at, or swingman between guard and center."

The only thing left now is to see where Klein, Winters, Fisher and perhaps a few other MAC players are selected in the draft, which begins Thursday. For Winters and Fisher, it's almost a sure thing. For Klein, he will just have to wait and see.

"There have been a lot of projections, but I try not to listen to that because you never know, come draft day," Klein said. "I've heard late rounds, or priority free agent. You never know. We'll see where the cards fall.

"I'm just excited, anxious, waiting for the draft. They like my grit. I'm kind of a throwback player. I just do my job, do all the little things right."

The only question now is if Klein is the right fit for one of the many NFL teams that have checked him out.

Mark Reynolds supplies the power, Chris Perez the drama as Cleveland Indians win, 5-4

Mark Reynolds broke a 4-4 tie with his seventh homer of the season and Chris Perez hung on in the ninth inning to give the Cleveland Indians a 5-4 victory over Houston.

HOUSTON, Texas --For a moment Sunday at Minute Maid Park, it looked as if the only thing that was going to cool off Mark Reynolds was his own bullpen.

Then closer Chris Perez, rolled out of the freezer for just the third time in a save situation this season, began to thaw. He struck out Chris Carter for the second out in the ninth inning, but the bases were still loaded. Juan Castro, a left-handed hitter, sent a hard grounder to the hole between short and third.

"I half expected to turn around and see it in left field because he hit it in the hole," said Perez.

What Perez saw was Reynolds, starting at third base for the first time since May 7, making a sprawling stop and throw to first base for the final out in the Indians' 5-4 victory over Houston.

"He hit the game-winning homer and made the last out of the game," said Perez. "That's a good day."

  • Boxscore | Scoreboard | Standings
  • Reynolds gave the Indians a 5-4 lead in the seventh when he hit a 3-2 pitch by Hector Ambriz (0-1) off one of the concrete archways above the left field wall at Minute Maid Park. Astros manager Bo Porter asked the umpires to review the homer, which they did, but the call stood.

"When I got to the dugout, there were guys watching the game on TV and they said it was out," said Reynolds.

Reynolds leads the Indians with seven homers and 18 RBI. Last year he went homerless in April with three RBI with the Orioles. Now, he's making game-saving plays at the hot corner.

"I thought I was free of a ground ball after Carter (a right-handed hitter) struck out," said Reynolds. "But you always have to be ready. I was able to put my glove in the right spot and win the game."

Last year Reynolds started at third, but played so pooorly he was moved to first.

Manager Terry Francona jumbled his lineup Sunday for a couple of reasons. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was unavailable because of a sore left wrist that he injured falling down the dugout steps before Saturday's game. It meant Mike Aviles had to play short instead third for Lonnie Chisenhall, who was giving the day off against lefty Erik Bedard.

Francona also wanted to give first baseman Nick Swisher a break from playing right field. He promised Swisher that he'd DH him on Sunday. So Reynolds, who has DH'd or played first all season, moved to third and catcher Carlos Santana made his first start of the season at first base.

"You want to know why I came back to manage?" asked Francona. "It's because of games like this. We had to move some people around and we still ended up winning."

After Reynolds gave the Indians a 5-4 lead, Francona was able to do something he hasn't done much of in April. He handed a one-run lead to Joe Smith, Vinnie Pestano and Perez. Who knew these guys were still on the team?

Smith gave up singles to the first two batters he faced in the seventh, but struck out Carter with runners on second and third to end the inning. Pestano allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, but retired the next three batters. Then came Perez, looking for his first save since April 2.

Rick Ankiel opened the ninth with a first-pitch double. Perez hit Matt Dominguez with a pitch, but the Astros did him a favor. Marwin Gonzalez advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt.

"I like when they bunt," said Pedrez. "My ball was going all over the place today and that's a free out."

After Jose Altuve was intentionally walked to load the bases, Perez retired Carter and Castro.

The Indians took two out of three from the Astros to win their third series of the year.

Ubaldo Jimenez was inconsistent. Two batters into the game Houston had a 2-0 lead on Fernando Martinez's homer. After a bloop single by Castro, Francona said, "Drew Stubbs saved the game."

Brandon Laird sent a long drove center field. Stubbs made a running catch at the fence and quickly got the ball to relay man Jason Kipnis. Castro had rounded second on the play and Kipnis' throw to first just beat him for the double play.

After Stubbs' catch, Jimemez retired 13 straight. By that time, the Indians had taken a 4-2 lead on homers by Gomes, Santana and Stubbs and Ryan Raburn's RBI single.

Jimenez, however, gave up a leadoff single to Gonzalez in the sixth and a triple to Altuve to make it 4-3. Francona called for the pen even though Jimenez had thrown only 65 pitches.

"I know he wasn't happy coming out of the game, but I don't want him to be happy," said Francona.

Nick Hagadone gave up a game-trying sacrifice fly to Carter. Cody Allen relieved with two outs and two on and threw four straight 95-mph fastballs to retire Justin Maxwell on a fly ball and win his first big league game.

Nick Swisher remembers grandparents before each pitch: Cleveland Indians Chatter

Before each pitch, the Cleveland Indians' Nick Swisher takes a moment to remember his grandparents.

Clubhouse confidential: Nick Swisher, when he's at the plate, before every pitch that comes his way, glances skyward.

"I'm looking at my grandparents," said Swisher. "They always loved to watch me play ball. My dad always said, 'Give them the best seat in the house.' Now I've just moved them to the top of the stadium."

Swisher was raised by his grandparents, both deceased, after his parents divorced.

Peanuts, popcorn, home runs: In the sixth inning Sunday, Drew Stubbs hit his first homer as an Indian, a line drive to right field that landed in a fan's tub of popcorn just beyond the fence. The shower of popcorn covered Houston's Rick Ankiel, who almost made a great catch.

"I saw the popcorn," said Stubbs. "I'm just glad he didn't catch it. He was close."

SportsTime Ohio reporter Katie Witham interviewed the fan, but not before springing for a new tub of popcorn. It cost $10.50.

"I got an email from my boss Monday that said I could expense the popcorn," said Witham with a laugh.

Stat of the day: Take an error off Michael Brantley's linescore. He was charged with an error Friday when he couldn't handle Jose Altuve's liner to left to start the game. The Astros asked MLB to review the call, and it was changed to a double.

With Brett Myers on DL, Corey Kluber joins rotation: Cleveland Indians Insider

After pitching four scoreless innings in relief Saturday, Corey Kluber will get a chance to start Wednesday for the Cleveland Indians.

CHICAGO -- Corey Kluber didn't want to earn a spot in the Indians' rotation because one of his teammates was injured, but that's what happened, and he plans to make the best of it.

When Brett Myers was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with inflammation in his right elbow, Kluber went from the bullpen to the rotation. He'll start Wednesday against the White Sox.

The Indians announced Monday that Myers, 32, has tendinitis and a mild strain (tear) of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. Myers will rest for two weeks and begin a throwing program as soon as the pain is gone.

"I'm confident that I can go out there and do what the team needs me to do -- give them a quality start," said Kluber. "You don't want anyone to get hurt, but that's not something any of us can control. I pitch when they tell me to pitch."

Kluber earned the third big league victory of his career Saturday night when he relieved Scott Kazmir in the Tribe's 19-6 blowout over the Astros and pitched four scoreless innings. He struck out six and allowed two hits.

"I've never pitched in a game that lopsided, but I felt good," said Kluber, who started the year at Class AAA Columbus and went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in two starts. "I was able to attack hitters, make quality pitches and get ahead in the count."

Myers is expected to miss at least a month. When he is healthy enough to pitch, he'll need to go on a rehab assignment.

The Indians signed Myers (0-3, 8.02) to a one-year, $7 million deal in January. In 211/3 innings, he's allowed the most homers (10) and earned runs (19) in the big leagues this year.

He's back: Right-hander Matt Albers was activated Monday, and right-hander Fernando Nieve was designated for assignment.

Albers has not pitched since April 8. The Indians placed him on the paternity list, the family medical emergency list and the restricted list to give him as much time with his wife as possible because of a difficult pregnancy.

Manager Terry Francona said Albers, who has been throwing at a high school in the Houston area, is ready to go.

"He understands completely that he had our blessing to be at home," Francona said. "We welcome him back and at the same time we will think about his wife and family. Hopefully, his teammates can help him."

The Indians purchased Nieve's contract from Columbus on Sunday to give them protection in case Ubaldo Jimenez got knocked out early or the game went into extra innings.

Sweet Lou: While catcher Yan Gomes has been impressive since joining the Indians from Columbus, Francona said Lou Marson will be activated Wednesday. Marson has been on the disabled list after injuring his neck in an April 6 collision at the plate.

"We've already talked to Yan about this," said Francona. "He understands that sitting here and not playing won't help him."

When asked to critique Gomes' catching abilities, Francona said: "Beyond his experience. . . . That's what has us so excited."

Gomes is hitting only .211 (4-for-19), but he's shown power with a triple and two homers. He's 2-for-2 throwing out runners attempting to steal.

Double down: In the fifth inning Sunday, Ryan Raburn hit about a 425-foot double to center field at Minute Maid Park. It's 436 feet to the fence.

"That's about as far as I can hit a ball," said Raburn. "That's just stupid hitting."

Said Francona: "That ball was embedded into that hill in center field. It looked like a two iron. . . . He's used to it. He played at Comerica Park [with Detroit]."

Finally: Francona was asked what the most impressive thing about Carlos Santana's start has been. He said it's that Santana entered Monday's game hitting .385 (10-for-26) right-handed and .375 (9-for-24) left-handed.

Videos and links to stories on Fisher, who could add to the growing list of standout NFL players from the Mid-American Conference.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference will likely be represented in the early portion of the first round, thanks to Central Michigan left offensive tackle Eric Fisher.

In fact, there are some talent evaluators who think the Kansas City Chiefs will select Fisher with the first pick in the draft instead of Texas A&M left offensive tackle Luke Joeckel.

(Scroll down for story links and videos)

A scouting report on Fisher for CBSSports.com includes:

Balanced athlete. Nimble feet and plays with excellent coordination and length for a 6-7, 305-pound blocker. Fisher is a smooth mover in any direction and does a nice job breaking down in space to handle speed rushers, showing the eye discipline to mirror defenders. He has added "good" weight the past few years and plays with a strong frame and core.

Fisher is a fiery competitor and plays with more pop than expected, delivering power in the run game. But he looks comfortable in pass protection and has worked hard to improve his technique and instincts at the position.

“It’s a great opportunity to come to a great school, a great school district here at Beachwood,” Gibbons said in a statement. “(It was) hard to leave Brunswick. I had a great time there but it definitely feels good to make the next jump to be the head coach. I’m ready to get working with the kids. I’m excited about that.”

Gibbons, the son of Lake Catholic defensive coordinator John Gibbons, also will teach physical education. He replaces Ryan Williams, who resigned in December to pursue other opportunities.

Beachwood is coming off a 7-3 season in which it just missed qualifying for the Division IV playoffs. The Bison will return 13 letterwinners.

“One of things that makes me so excited about Mike is the kids will love him,” Beachwood athletic director Ryan Peters said in a statement. “They will be happy to be around him. I think what will end up happening is these kids will play very, very hard for him. I think he’ll connect with these kids really, really quickly.”

Gibbons won a state title at Lake Catholic and two national titles with Mount Union and previously served as defensive coordinator at Highland.

NFL Draft 2013: Jordan Norwood, Cleveland Browns wide receiver, kept the faith after he wasn't drafted (video)

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jordan Norwood went undrafted, but he didn't lose the faith.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After an impressive showing at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, Penn State wide receiver Jordan Norwood just knew he was closer to his dream of playing in the NFL.

So, like many college players during that spring four years ago, Norwood and a host of family and friends tuned into the NFL draft with the hopes of erupting into a celebration.

However, Norwood's name was never called. Disappointment and anguish
followed. But his dream never wavered. Despite not getting drafted, Norwood's NFL journey came through free agency.

Asdrubal Cabrera's two-run single gives Cleveland Indians 3-2 win over Chicago

Justin Masterson pitches seven solid innings to improve to 4-1, and Terry Francona has a happy 54th birthday.

CHICAGO -- Terry Francona turned 54 on Monday and the Indians gave him the kind of birthday present he will remember. Asdrubal Cabrera delivered it and it sure beat the heck out of falling down a flight of dugout stairs.

With the Tribe trailing, 2-1, with two outs in the eighth inning, Cabrera lined a two-run single into center field for a 3-2 victory over Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field. The Indians have won three straight, while the White Sox have lost four in a row.

It was a frustrating birthday for Francona until the eighth. Justin Masterson was pitching well, but the offense wasn't producing much of anything except outs.

After the Tribe took an early 1-0 lead, Connor Gillaspie hit a leadoff homer in the second to pull the White Sox even. Chicago made it 2-1 when switch-hitting catcher Hector Gimenez doubled to left-center field to score Alexei Ramirez in the fourth. Michael Brantley chased the ball into the fence, but couldn't catch it.

    Boxscore | Scoreboard | Standings

That's how the score stayed until the eighth because the Indians couldn't do much against right-hander Dylan Axelrod. Making just his third career appearance against the Indians, Axelrod allowed one run in six innings, striking out four, walking two and allowing three hits.

Things changed in the eighth and for the first time the Indians' much-talked-about, but rarely-seen, speed game played a role.

Lefty Matt Thornton (0-1) started the inning by retiring Lonnie Chisenhall, but Drew Stubbs singled off Gillaspie's glove at third. The fleet Stubbs stole second and Brantley walked.

Thornton, worried about the speed of Stubbs and Brantley, tried to pick off Stubbs, but his throw went into center field as Stubbs went to third and Brantley to second. Thornton seemed to redeem himself when he struck out Jason Kipnis for the second out to bring the slumping Cabrera to the plate.

How bad have things been for the Indians' All-Star shortstop?

He entered Monday's game hitting .150 overall and in a 7-for-47 slump. To make matters worse, he slipped down the dugout steps Saturday night at Minute Maid Park and almost broke his left wrist. X-rays were negative, but Cabrera sat out Sunday's game against Houston.

In his first three at-bats Monday, Cabrera grounded out, flied out and struck out. In the eighth, however, he sent Thornton's first pitch into center field for a single as Stubbs and Brantley scored for a 3-2 lead.

"That's a lot better than falling down the dugout steps," said Cabrera. "I was looking for something to hit up the middle. I love those situations."

Several days ago Francona said when the Indians started hitting more and putting more runners on base, there would be more opportunities to use their speed. Monday night was one of those opportunities.

"If they don't pay attention to our base-runners, Stubbs can steal third," said Francona. "With Brantley behind him, that's part of our game. It helps."

Masterson (4-1, 1.85) allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings. He's 2-0 against Chicago this year, allowing just two runs in 16 innings. Overall, he's 6-5 against Chicago with a 2.47 ERA (31 earned runs in 113 innings).

While the eighth was the deciding inning, Masterson pointed to a play in the seventh that tilted the game in the Tribe's favor. He started the inning by hitting and walking Jordan Danks, but catcher Carlos Santana came to the rescue.

"Carlos gave a heads up to our boys at second and picked the guy (pinch-runner Blake Tekotte) off," said Masterson. "We needed a play right there. That was a momentum swing because we took the lead in the eighth."

Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless eighth and Chris Perez pitched the ninth for his third save and second in as many days. This time Perez did not cause heart palpitations as he retired three of the four batters he faced. On Sunday, he loaded the bases against Houston, but escaped to save the 5-4 victory.

"Sunday was fun, but tonight was OK," said Francona. "We don't need to have that much excitement."

The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the second. Jason Giambi blooped a single into left field with one out. After Santana struck out, Mark Reynolds walked. Chisenhall sent a bad-hop double past Alejandro De Aza in left field to score Giambi and send Reynolds to third.

Athletic LSU pass rusher Barkevious Mingo an option for Cleveland Browns in NFL Draft

While Barkevious Mingo's production dropped in 2012, his position coach at LSU believes the pass rusher would add speed and athleticism to the Cleveland Browns.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo wandered around Time Square Monday night in a New York frame of mind, chronicling his NFL Draft experience on instagram.

But come Thursday night, when the Browns are on the clock, will his focus shift from Radio City Music Hall to the home of the Rock Hall?

At least one draft analyst, Tony Pauline of draftinsider.net, believes Mingo could end up with the Browns if Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner is gone at No. 6. Browns defensive line coach Joe Cullen and others attended Mingo's Pro Day at LSU, and the Browns brought him to Cleveland for a pre-draft visit.

"Coach Cullen and the guys were impressed with what I could do and thought I could help their program," said Mingo, an explosive pass-rusher. "I think I left a good impression on him and hopefully we'll get to work together."

Mingo (6-4, 241) is one of the players the Browns are considering with their top pick in the draft, whether they stay No. 6 or trade down in the round. Word is that want to move down, but that they're targeting Milliner or a pass-rusher if they stay put. They like Oregon's Dion Jordan, but he might be gone. So Mingo could be in play.

"That would be great," said Mingo. "I know they have Paul Kruger and when you have a player like that it just makes everything easier."

Mingo played 4-3 rush end at LSU, but is certain he can make the switch to 3-4 outside linebacker in the pros.

"I think I'll play both," he said. "The first couple of downs I'd play outside 'backer, and third down with hand down on the line is what I've heard from some of the teams."

Loaded with talent, the speedy rusher has been answering questions for months about why he had only 4.5 sacks in 2012, after notching seven the year before. He also led the Tigers with 15 tackles for a loss in 2011.

"It was just the scheme and the way we played teams," Mingo said. "I drew a lot of double-teams. We also played mobile quarterbacks this year and we tried to contain them and keep them in the pocket and not let them run up and down the field like they did to other teams. There were a bunch of factors."

Mingo's college position coach, Brick Haley, who coached D-line for the Bears from 2007 to 2009, says folks needn't worry about Mingo pouncing on quarterbacks.

"I can promise you this: he's a very explosive edge-rusher," said Haley. "He's probably going to be one of the best in the league. The thing people don't realize is that the year before that, he had a great year in sacks and teams aren't stupid. They're going to game-plan for you. They had backs chipping him and tight ends staying in to block him. It allowed other guys like Sam Montgomery (17 sacks the past two seasons) to have the one-on-ones."

Haley thinks it's a no-brainer for the Browns to snatch up Mingo.

"They'd be getting an exceptional athlete," he said. "The guys is oh-so athletic. He can make plays that other players can't make. He's really a special talent. It's something you only get once every 10 years to coach a guy like that. He's exceptional in everything he does and he has fun doing it. That's probably what intrigues me the most. No matter what you're asking him to do, he gets it done and when he does it, he always has a smile on his face. It's amazing to see a young man with that kind of enthusiasm and drive and push for the things that wants out of life."

Haley has no doubt that Mingo can make the transition to 3-4 outside linebacker if the Browns so choose.

"He's a chameleon," Haley said. "He'll blend in to whatever he needs to blend into. When he came to us, he was a linebacker. We asked him to put his hand on the ground and he became one of the best ends that we had. If you ask him to be a linebacker, he'll be one of the best linebackers that you have. If you leave him at rush end, he'll be one of the best ends that you have. The great thing about him is that he's an every down player. Contrary to some people's beliefs, he's very physical and very strong."

Haley set Mingo's athleticism is what sets him apart.

"It's his quickness, his cat-like reflexes, I mean, he's a different animal," he said. "You don't find guys that can play the five-technique and pound in there with a big 350-pound tackle and then he can run outside of one of the fastest running backs you've got. He never ceases to amaze me, because I always know he's got a little more. He's got a different gear."

Haley chuckles at all the pre-draft bashing Mingo has received, the critics who think he might flop.

"It's not going to be funny when they play against him," he said. "The thing about him is that he always wants to prove you wrong. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. When he gets to the league, he's going to get better and better and better."

At the NFL Combimne, NFL Network's Mike Mayock had Mingo in the second half of the first round -- but moved him into his top 10 last week.

"He's explosive, he's quick, he can win at the snap," Mayock said on a conference call. "He can dip. He can bend. This is a guy with tremendous potential as a pass rusher, and that is what this league's about. When he was on the move, I thought he was almost unstoppable. When he was lined up on an island by himself against a quality tackle, I thought he struggled a little bit. I don't think he's a very good run defender. But I'm willing to bet on the upside."

Nfldraftscout's Rob Rang isn't as sold.

"He's an unbelievable athlete with undeniable talent but at the same time he didn't produce enough to back up all of that potential," Rang said. "Ultimately that's what it comes down to for me. For a guy that has extraordinary talent, he had ordinary production."

But Haley knows Mingo will prove Rang wrong.

"His mind-set is to come in right now and be the best rookie in the league," said Haley. "He's hungry to please and plays with passion. You turn on the film and it doesn't take long to realize he's amazing."

Dee Milliner, Alabama Crimson Tide CB: NFL Draft 2013 prospect profile

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- What a luxury cornerback Dee Milliner was for Alabama during its national championship runs the last two years.

The Crimson Tide could count on Milliner's coverage to not only prevent the big pass play, but to play it tough on the short-to-medium routes, too.

A scouting report on Milliner -- whose first name is DeMarcus -- by WalterFootball.com includes:

Alabama has been a factory for pro talent, and its best prospect for the 2013 NFL Draft is Milliner. Teams in the passing-driven NFL are always looking for cornerbacks who have the ability match up on receivers in man coverage. Finding a cornerback who can execute on an island and limit, or take away, a No. 1 receiver is rare. Milliner could be the only cornerback with that ability in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Also in the WalterFootball.com profile of Milliner:

Player Comparison: Joe Haden. There are a lot of similarities in the styles of play with Haden and Milliner, but Milliner probably won't be as solid of a pro as Haden. They both are gritty corners who are physical with receivers. Like Haden, Milliner has the ability to play press-man coverage and run with receivers downfield.

Milliner is a little bigger while Haden (5-11, 190) is more fluid. Haden also has shown more ball-hawk ability, but Milliner has the potential to have good ball skills. The Browns selected Haden with the seventh overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, and Milliner should also be a top-10 pick. He could end up being a similar player to Haden, but not as good as the Cleveland standout.
