Nick Saban calls reports of a possible return to the NFL 'kind of funny': Video

"This is what we're happy doing," Saban said in a video and story posted on AL.com. "This is what we like to do. But nobody really believes that. So, you know, maybe it doesn't matter." Watch video

Alabama head coach Nick Saban thinks speculation over a possible return to the NFL is "funny."

"This is what we're happy doing," Saban said in a video and story posted on AL.com. "This is what we like to do. But nobody really believes that. So, you know, maybe it doesn't matter."

The question was asked at a press conference Tuesday in response to a Boston Globe report that speculated if Saban wanted to return to the pros, it would likely be in Cleveland with Mike Lombardi as his GM. The two worked together here under Bill Belichick in the mid '90s.

Earlier this week, ESPN Cleveland reported a rumor that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is prepared to offer Saban a 10-year, $100-million deal to be the team's next head coach.

"I don't know what I have to say or do, but it's kind of funny to me," Saban said about the reports.  "Plus y'all asked the wrong person. Miss Terry makes all the decisions about all this stuff anyway."

Terry, Saban's wife, told a Birmingham radio station two weeks ago the couple had no interest in leaving Alabama, AL.com reported.

“We’re very comfortable here. We love it here. It’s a great fit for our family. It’s a good fit for me. As far as we’re concerned, this is where we’ll retire someday," she said.

Cleveland Browns visit the Denver Broncos: Who will win and by how much? (poll)

Browns are 5-9. Broncos are 11-3 and on a nine-game winning streak.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns play the Broncos on Sunday in Denver.

Cleveland is 5-9 following its 38-21 loss to the Washington Redskins last Sunday at Browns Stadium. Denver, the AFC West champion, is 11-3 and on a nine-game winning streak. The Broncos defeated the Ravens, 34-17, at Baltimore in their latest victory, a game they dominated even more than the final score indicates.

The Browns have scored 20 points per game and given up 22.1. Denver is scoring 29.2 points and allowing 19.6 points per game.

The teams last played on Sept. 20, 2009. The Broncos won, 27-6, at Denver.

The Browns began this season with five losses: 17-16 to the Philadelphia Eagles at Browns Stadium; 34-27 to the Bengals in Cincinnati; 24-14 to the Buffalo Bills in Cleveland; 23-16 to the Ravens in Baltimore; 41-27 to the Giants in New York.

Then, the Browns posted their first win, 34-24, over the Bengals at Browns Stadium. They lost to the host Indianapolis Colts, 17-13, in Week 7, then defeated the San Diego Chargers, 7-6, in Cleveland. Following their bye week, the Browns lost at home, 25-15, to Baltimore. They then lost to the Cowboys, 23-20 in overtime, at Dallas before returning home to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-14. The Browns followed with a 20-14 win over the Raiders in Oakland and a 30-7 home victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, before the 38-21 home loss to Washington.

Denver opened its season with a 31-19 win at home over the Steelers, followed by a 27-21 road loss to the Atlanta Falcons and a 31-25 home loss to the Houston Texans. The Broncos routed the Raiders, 37-6, in Denver and lost to the host New England Patriots, 31-21.

Then, the Broncos nine straight wins: 35-24 at San Diego; 34-14 over the New Orleans Saints in Denver; 31-23 at Cincinnati; 36-14 over the Panthers in Carolina; 30-23 at home over the Chargers; 17-9 at Kansas City; 31-23 at home over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; 26-13 at Oakland; the 34-17 win at Baltimore.

Cleveland Browns' Trent Richardson: Why isn't he breaking any runs? (poll)

$
0
0

Richardson, in 258 carries this season, has just 12 runs of 10 yards or more, with just three carries (19, 26 and 32 yards) for longer than 15 yards.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns running back Trent Richardson didn't get the football often during Cleveland's 38-21 loss to the Washington Redskins last Sunday at Browns Stadium.

Richardson gained 4, 14, 0 and 6 yards on his first four carries, respectively. The 6-yarder was for a touchdown that gave the Browns a 7-0 lead with 8:41 left in the first quarter, and left Richardson with 24 yards in four carries. He ran the football seven more times the rest of the way, for five yards, including a 1-yard scoring plunge late in the second quarter to put the Browns ahead, 14-10.

Richardson finished with 28 yards in 11 carries. For the season, he has totaled 897 yards on 258 rushes, with 11 touchdowns. He has a sub-par yards-per-carry of 3.5 yards.

Plain Dealer Browns beat writer Tom Reed wrote that Richardson apologized to Browns fans for the team's performance against Washington, and questioned the team's strategy.

Richardson's 14-yard run against the Redskins was notable in one sense. In eight of 14 games this season, he has not had a run of at least 10 yards. He's had one game with a long run of five yards (on eight carries), one with a long of six yards (12 carries) and one with a long of seven yards (14 carries). Twice, Richardson's longest run in a game was eight yards (14 and 18 carries) and three times, his long run was nine yards (19, 28 and 20 carries).

Thus, in the eight games Richardson hasn't had a run of at least 10 yards, he has totaled 133 carries.

Richardson has had just 12 carries for at least 10 yards this season -- just 4.7 percent of his carries. He has just three runs of longer than 15 yards -- carries of 19, 26 and a season-long 32 yards. So, one of every 86 carries for Richardson has gone for more than 15 yards.

The Browns owned the fourth pick in the first round as they went into last April's draft. They traded that pick, along with fourth-, fifth- and seventh-rounders, to Minnesota for the Vikings' first pick at No. 3 overall -- the pick used to draft Richardson.

Some running backs drafted after Richardson have had more productive, or efficient, seasons than the former Alabama star.

For instance, Washington's Alfred Morris, whom the Browns did a decent job against on Sunday -- 27 carries for 87 yards and two touchdowns. The Redskins selected Morris in the sixth round, with the 173rd pick, out of Florida Atlantic. He has rushed for 1,322 yards and nine touchdowns on 280 carries this season. Morris has averaged 4.7 yards a carry. In all 14 games, he has had at least one run for 11 yards or more.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took Boise State's Doug Martin with the 31st pick in the first round. He has 1,250 yards in 273 carries, for a 4.6 yard average, with 10 touchdowns. In 13 of 14 games, Martin has had at least one carry for 10 yards or more.

In fairness to Richardson, it must be noted that Morris and Martin have benefited from their teams' quarterbacks: the Redskins' brilliant rookie, Robert Griffin III, who was sidelined against the Browns but ably replaced by Kirk Cousins; and the Buccaneers' Josh Freeman. Richardson has played for a Browns' offense directed by an inconsistent rookie, Brandon Weeden.

Yet, the Browns' overall offense gives Richardson a better chance to excel than some recent Cleveland running backs. Weeden's ability to throw long and an improving group of receivers are elements that were lacking in recent years, and at least make opposing defenses pay attention to the Browns' passing game. And, the Browns' offensive line is considered above average, while in past seasons, the line's right side was a weakness.

The other factor which may be significant in assessing Richardson's play this season is his health. He injured his ribs during the Browns' 34-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 14 in Cleveland.

Going into that Cincinnati game, however, Richardson was averaging just 3.7 yards a carry. Some attributed that so-so start to his season to the two surgeries, both called minor, that he had on his left knee: one, in February; the other, on Aug. 9, which prevented Richardson from playing in any preseason games.

Cleveland Indians, looking for depth, sign RHP Joe Martinez, catcher Brian Jeroloman

The Indians signed another minor league arm in Joe Martinez to add depth to the starting rotation. They also signed catcher Brian Jeroloman.

brian-jeroloman.jpg Brian Jeroloman was a sixth-round pick by Toronto in 2006.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians added depth to their suspect starting rotation Wednesday by signing right-hander Joe Martinez to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

They also invited catcher Brian Jeroloman to camp on a minor league deal. Jeroloman was in Toronto's organization last season.

Martinez, 29, pitched for Class AAA Columbus in 2011. Last season he pitched at Class AAA Reno, Arizona's top farm. He went 10-11 in 27 starts. He struck out 99, walked 49 and allowed 206 hits in 155 1/3 innings. Martinez won seven straight starts from May to June.

Martinez, 63-55 with a 3.92 ERA in 190 minor league games, has appeared in 19 big league games with San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Arizona.

The Indians rotation at the moment has just three healthy pitchers in Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez and Zach McAllister. Recently-acquired Trevor Bauer could give them a fourth healthy arm, but two other candidates, Carlos Carrasco and Corey Kluber, are coming off surgeries.

Carrasco is expected to be healthy after missing last year following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and Kluber should be ready by late February after having surgery on his right knee.

Jeroloman, 27, played only 43 games last season because of a right knee injury. He started in rookie ball for the Blue Jays and ended the season at Class AA New Hampshire. Jeroloman was sixth round pick of the Blue Jays in 2006 and threw out 44 percent (18-for-41) of the runners who tried to steal against him last season.

He attended the University of Florida where he was named Defensive Player of the Year by bat manufacturer Louisville Slugger.

Jeroloman hit .183 (24-for-131) with 10 RBI last season. He started the year at rookie ball and ended it at Class AA New Hampshire.

Cleveland Browns P.M. links: Brandon Weeden a Bronco if not for Peyton Manning?; Browns face title-worthy Denver defense

A good chance the Broncos -- who play the Browns Sunday -- would have drafted Weeden had they not signed Manning. Tim Tebow and defense carried Broncos last season. The defense is even better now. More Browns story links.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns play the Broncos on Sunday in Denver.

Denver is 11-3, on a nine-game winning streak and clinched the AFC West championship some time ago. Contrarily, the Browns clinched their fifth straight losing season, and 12th in 14 years since returning to the NFL as a franchise in 1999, with a 38-21 loss to the Washington Redskins last Sunday at Browns Stadium.

Cleveland has scored 20 points per game and given up 22.1. Denver is scoring 29.2 points and allowing 19.6 points per game.

The teams last played on Sept. 20, 2009. The Broncos won, 27-6, at Denver.

Plain Dealer and cleveland.com Browns coverage includes numerous stories, columns, videos and photos, such as Mary Kay Cabot's story that Browns CEO Joe Banner says the team will decide on the job status of coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert soon after the season ends with Cleveland's game at Pittsburgh on Dec. 30.

The Browns selected their quarterback, Brandon Weeden, with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of last April's draft.

Jeff Legwold writes for the Denver Post that if not for the availability of a future Hall of Famer, Weeden might be playing against the Browns on Sunday instead of for them:

Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden will always reside in a little slice of team history.

That's because the Broncos' decision makers, including executive vice president of football operations John Elway and head coach John Fox, were in Stillwater, Okla., to visit with Weeden last March when they sent the plane from there to pick up another quarterback they hoped to sign.

A guy named Peyton Manning.

And Manning was on the plane when it returned to Stillwater to scoop up Elway and crew. The group returned to Denver, and the rest is helicopters-following-SUVs history.

But if Manning had not signed on the dotted line for the Broncos and changed the course of the franchise, Weeden likely would have been the Broncos' pick as a developmental quarterback.

The Broncos liked Weeden's NFL-ready game.

Cleveland Browns and NFL A.M. Links: Brandon Weeden needs to play better; Trent Richardson has not played well enough; Jets hope to trade Mark Sanchez

Brandon Weeden makes an obvious statement when it comes to his recent play.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Quarterback Brandon Weeden says he's not happy about how he has played, and that he has to play better in the final two games of the season for the Cleveland Browns.

Really?

Mary Kay Cabot writes on Cleveland.com how Weeden is 32nd out of 35 quarterbacks with a 72.4 rating, and he's also tied for second-most interceptions in the league at 17, one behind Drew Brees and Andrew Luck.

"[I need to] be more consistent," he said. "That's on me. There's no one to blame except myself. That's one thing I'm going to have to dial in on this offseason and continue to learn this offense and bring these receivers around and get on the same page and get better."

So does this mean Weeden is feeling the heat because owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner are evaluating him? Weeden says he can't think about that, but he should. Poor play could mean the Browns go in another direction for their quarterback of the future.

"I can't think about that," he said. "I need to play well because I haven't played well enough. That's all I'm worried about. ... Whatever happens, I have to put eight good quarters on tape."

Browns tight end Jordan Cameron, who sat out Wednesday's practice, is being treated fror concussion symptoms. Alex Smith, who's been serving as a fullback, will most likely be back at tight end and rookie Brad Smelley will see action at fullback.

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns tight end Jordan Cameron, who sat out practice Wednesday and today, is being treated as though he has a concussion and might sit out the Broncos game.

Coach Pat Shurmur said Cameron came in Wednesday morning not feeling well, and the Browns began the concussion protocol.

He said tight end Alex Smith, who's been playing fullback for the past seven games, will most likely move back to tight end if Cameron can't play.

That would pave the way for rookie Brad Smelley to dress for the first time this season and play fullback. Smelley, promoted from the practice squad on Dec. 10, was a seventh-round pick out Alabama, where he blocked for Trent Richardson.

In other Browns news and notes:

• Receiver Mohamed Massaquoi sat out today's practice with a knee injury. He was limited Wednesday.

• Defensive end Frostee Rucker sat out for the second straight day with his groin injury.

• Shurmur defended Richardson, pointing out that only the Vikings' Adrian Peterson has more rushing TDs than Richardson's 11.

• Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress on Brandon Weeden: "He's a rookie. He's going to have some backsteps. Go back and look at (Peyton Manning's) numbers when he was a rookie....We're talking about a rookie."

• Childress, on Weeden's batted passes: "We probably shouldn't stare down receivers too long."

• Childress, on Weeden staying aggressive: "He needs to keep shooting. You can't go into a shell and be afraid to throw it.''

• Childress said Weeden needs more time to develop and deserves a chance going forward. "I'd say you'll see a different guy coming into training camp and see him progress from there (depending on if things stay static),'' Childress said.

• Childress acknowledged that Weeden also has a lot of young talent around him, including rookie receivers Josh Gordon and Travis Benjamin. He said he appreciated Weeden coming out and saying he needs to play better.

• Childress said he doubts Richardson (ribs) will be healthy all season, but that he hasn't seen him wear down over the past few weeks.

Coach Pat Shurmur says DT Phil Taylor is playing better than he did last season.

BEREA, Ohio -

Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur's Thursday press conference, as provided by the Browns:

(On if the Broncos' wide receivers complement each other as possession receivers)- "In terms of possession receivers? They all need to be possession receivers. That means they catch the ball. (Eric) Decker's done a nice job for them and (Demaryius) Thomas is very explosive. I think they both play extremely well. They catch the ball outside, inside and they've done a good job. They've done a really good job."

(On what difference it makes for them having Peyton Manning at quarterback)- "I don't know. I'm sure with Peyton running the offense there's some synergy there. Good quarterbacks make everybody around them better. I'm sure that can be said about Peyton. I've never really been around him, but just watching him play, the players around him play at a high level."

(On if Manning not taking many sacks throughout his career is because of his offensive line or his quick release)- "I think getting sacks and giving up sacks is a team thing. They've been very well coordinated with that they do and getting rid of the football."

(On Jordan Cameron not being on the injury report after the game Sunday)- "He came in yesterday and wasn't feeling well so he didn't practice yesterday."

(On if Cameron has a concussion)- "He came in yesterday and didn't feel well so we put him through the paces. We're treating him as though he may have one."

(On Joe Thomas' play this year)- "Joe's played well this year, he played well last year and from what I know of him, he's played well prior to me being here. He's a pro. He's a very talented guy. He's outstanding in pass protection. He's a good run blocker. He's what you're looking for in a left tackle in this league."

(On how he feels about Tashaun Gipson having to step in this week)- "I feel good about Gipson. He's done a very nice job for us in there. He communicates well. He's a good athlete. We see him intercept passes. He does all the thing you need from a safety and I'm looking forward to him having a good game."

(On how much he knew about Gipson initially and what qualities kept him on the team)- "All the things I just mentioned make him a guy that was worthy of making the team. We knew quite a bit about him. We brought him in, of course because we liked him, but then once they're here you've got to see him do it in training camp. He showed us the things we thought. He is what we thought he was, so to speak. He's done well. It's not an easy position to play, safety, because you get involved tackling, but as soon as you get too involved they throw something over your head. There needs to be some instincts there and he showed us that he has those."

(On if it is an easy transition moving from cornerback to safety like Gipson did in college)- "I don't know. There are a lot of players that go to college that end up playing a different position than what they went there as freshman. I'm sure that was a normal transition for him. There's a different skill set, really a very different skill set for a guy that plays safety and then a guy that plays corner. We feel like he's got a chance to be a good safety in this league."

(On if the Jordan Cameron's injury opens the door for Alex Smith to play tight end again)- "Alex Smith is a tight end, we just happen to play him at fullback. We'll have another guy ready to go, possibly (Brad) Smelley, who's active."

(On the kind of boost that Trent Richardson has given the run game in the red zone)- "A really good boost, quite frankly. I'm glad you asked that question because everybody's been very critical of Trent. The last time I checked, he's got the second most rushing touchdowns of anybody in the league only behind Arian Foster."

(On if he has gotten the ball to his wide receivers in the red zone as much as he wanted too)- "We'd like to just score more touchdowns period. I think we've gotten in there close where if you remember last year we didn't get them in in a situation where we felt like it was important to run the ball. This year we have so at the end of the day you want to add up the total touchdowns and score more points than the opponent. What Trent gives us is he gets in the end zone and I think that's important and that's why he gets his touches. You're always looking to score more. It's important that you get the ball to your guys. You've got to be able to establish some kind of balance, whatever we want to call it, running and passing."

(On if he stresses the importance of getting off to a good start against Denver so they are not battling back)- "Yeah, I think we've got to play well first snap to last. We've got to make sure when we have opportunities to score points we do it. I think they've scored more than 30 points in nine or 10 games this year so that's a pretty explosive offense. When we get our opportunities, we've got to make sure we make them count."

(On if it was a pleasant surprise that Phil Taylor was able to rebound from his injury and contribute)- "I'm glad Phil's back and I think he's playing better than he did last year. It's unfortunate that he had to miss half the year with that injury, but he's back going and playing well."

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron's Thursday press conference: A transcript

Dick Jauron, defensive coordinator, says Tashaun Gipson has made tremendous progress this season.

BEREA, Ohio -

Cleveland Browns DC Dick Jauron's Thursday press conference, as provided by the Browns:

(On going against Peyton Manning)- "It's clearly really tough. There are very few teams that have any kind of record against him over the years of his playing career. He's clearly headed for the Hall of Fame. He's one of the best that has ever played the game. He's very smart. He studies, prepares himself well. It's difficult and about everything has been tried, that's for sure. He doesn't win every one of them so we'll prepare and we'll go out there and try to play our best game."

(On if they will try to disguise coverages against Manning)- "I think everybody does it. Everybody tries it, not only against him but in every game. You're always trying to disguise what you're playing. Every team will try it, and sometimes you probably do fool him, but he's still pretty good with the ball. If you can just try to make him ready your coverage once he gets the snap in his hands, he's plenty good enough. If you give him all kinds of indications prior to the snap, then he's even better than that. That's what people try to do. They are trying to hide what they are doing until he gets the ball in his hand, until the ball is snapped, and then you play and it's on from there."

(On if there is no point in blitzing Manning because he is so effective against it)- "Honestly, he's effective against almost everything you do, so the blitz plays a part in it. It certainly does. I think against every quarterback, even him, they've got to be aware that you will blitz, you'll bring people. He reads it awfully quickly like he does most things in football. He's extremely professional, very prepared, very experienced. He can tell by your tilts, and where the safeties go and that kind of thing, where the pressure is coming from. I think you've just got to keep mixing it up like people do and then fight. You've got to fight for 60 minutes and hope you can get some breaks, and you can get the ball bouncing your way. Some luck always plays into every game and just play hard."

(On if he will watch past tape of Romeo Crennel's teams who had success against Peyton Manning)- "We do go back and look at teams that played them well. It helps us somewhat if they are 4-3 teams not 3-4 teams because that's what we are. We do look at people that we think played them well and try to see what their thinking was, why they played them well."

(On if he's confident that Craig Robertson and Tashaun Gipson will step up and perform well)- "Of course Craig's been in there all the time. It's a huge opportunity for all of our young players and particularly Tashaun's role will increase some obviously. Usama's (Young) snaps will go up because we were kind of rotating three. I'll see where that one goes. It's a great opportunity for them to play against an outstanding football team. Clearly it's not just the quarterbacks, not just Peyton. They've got a really good football team around him. He's the center of it on our side of the ball. It'll be beneficial to their development, and hopefully they can and we can perform well."

(On the progress Gipson has made this year)- "Tremendous progress. He's an undrafted free agent and from the first time you see him on the field, you recognize that he's got athletic skills. Then of course you just wonder why he wasn't a draft pick. You would like to say all the time, 'It doesn't matter how they get to your camp, everybody starts equal in their play.', but there's always some doubt. There's got to be something here. There's got to be something that's missing, but we never found it from almost the first day on. He prepares well, he works hard. He's been tough on the field. He's tackled well. He moves well. We think we found one. Our personnel department did a terrific job."

(On if they have seen Gipson's quickness stand out)- "Absolutely and it does stand out. Again, we've got to tip our hat to our personnel people. I think Ray Rhodes was involved in that one also. I think he knew the agent and was in the middle of that if I'm not mistaken, but that might have been Bad (Johnson Bademosi). They did a great job obtaining him."

(On what went into the discussion about waiving Dimitri Patterson)- "I think that it would be really inappropriate for me to respond to that. I think the head coach will handle all of those questions."

(On if he participated in the discussions about Patterson)- "The head coach can handle all of that."

(On if it's hard to not think about what will happen after the season)- "No, I don't think about it. I don't really think about anything except the season really and the next game. The rest of it always takes care of itself no matter what I think or worry, so no I don't project."

(On what happened on all of the boots that Kirk Cousins ran last week)- "It was tough. We didn't play him very well. They're a difficult scheme to play, always has been. It was more kind of vintage Mike Shanahan then all the film we see preparing for it. I can't say it was unexpected because we knew what we would get. The volume of boots was probably more than we expected. Then, I didn't make the best calls, clearly, and we didn't make plays on the ball when we needed to make them. We got them in situations where we really could have helped ourselves either getting off the field or just recovering the ball. What happened on the field is what should have happened. It played itself out. It's done. If you can just make your plays on the ball, and when it's on the ground, fall on it, you've got a chance to make a difference in football games all the time, but they beat us."

(On if he left the game impressed with Cousins)- "I thought he was good going in. I thought he was a solid NFL quarterback going in. He played a good game. He made plays. He made plays and throws versus us. My hat is off to him."

(On what difference he sees in Manning's arm strength now)- "Not much. He's putting the ball on the money and he's delivering it pretty much all over the field. His timing looks pretty much like it's always looked. I wish it had diminished greatly, but it hasn't."

(On how Manning getting rid of the ball so quickly affects his pass rushing strategy)- "It's a frustrating deal because he does get it out quickly, and a good deal of it is scheme with him. He is the scheme. He runs the scheme and he knows that. He knows exactly what he's doing. He knows exactly where the ball is going by what he sees. Probably pre-snap he's got an idea, and then as the snap develops he knows quickly. He gets it out quickly. Brett Favre played lots of years in the same system and the ball came out fast. You didn't get a lot of chances to hit him. They are probably dissimilar in a lot of ways, but similar in that regard. The ball comes out fast. They know where it's going quickly."

(On if Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are similar)- "I would say yes. You have to have so much respect for both of them. They just are so competitive. They never give you room to breathe. They are always coming after you. It doesn't really matter what the score is. They are going to come after you. I think you saw it, I can't remember when the game was, when the Patriots were down 31-3, but I understand that ended up a football game. You just can never breathe easy until you're on top and the game ends because they won't quit and they just keep grinding on you."

(On how Phil Taylor is playing this year)- "Phil's got a lot of potential in front of him, and he's playing fine. He got the late start on the year, hardly any offseason, if at all, and he's done a nice job preparing himself. He's playing hard and it's all in front of him I think. I think his best years are all in front of him."

(On if he is comfortable putting Buster Skrine in the slot role)- "I think we've talked about him a great deal in here and I am a big Buster Skrine fan. He's a very easy guy to coach. He's a very talented young player. He really wants to do it. He works at it. He studies it. He listens. He listens to veterans. I think he's got an admirable respect for the game of football. He's got a long career in front of him. I'm a big Buster Skrine fan. He just needs time and experience."

(On the challenge of facing their pass offense but also Knowshon Moreno)- "It'll be huge. It'll be a huge challenge for our defense. They are awfully talented. They've got the numbers to prove it. They've got the players to do it. They've got the quarterback to run the whole thing. They are difficult to play against. It'll be a great challenge for our guys."

(On who the best quarterback he ever coached against is)- "I don't know, there are so many great ones. Our three divisional opponents all have outstanding quarterbacks. You mentioned Tom Brady, what's he won three Super Bowls? That's hard to beat those kinds of numbers. Of course, Peyton is just Peyton. We had to play his brother earlier in the year. There are so many really good, well there aren't so many really good ones, but the really good ones win don't they? I guess that's why they are who they are. They have a way about them. They have a leadership quality and the athletic skills and the toughness that it requires to hang in there. It's a great challenge."
