Cleveland Indians' hitters mesmerized by Alex Cobb in 4-2 loss to Baltimore Orioles

The Indians' six-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday at Progressive Field.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Alex Cobb has lost 15 games this season. The Orioles, the team that pays him, has already been eliminated from the AL East race.

But Cobb still knows how to beat the Indians. He did it back in 2013 when the Terry Francona express was just starting to gain steam in Cleveland. He did it again on Saturday, ruining Jim Thome Day for Indians fans.

Cobb beat the Tribe in the 2013 wild-card game, 4-0, while pitching for Tampa Bay. On Saturday, he pitched the Orioles past the Indians, 4-2, in front of a sellout crowd that came to see Thome, the Indians' newest Hall of Famer, have his No. 25 retired.

The loss ended the Indians' six-game winning streak. It was just their third loss in the last 14 games.

Rookie Adam Plutko (4-3, 4.62) pitched well in his return to the rotation for injured Trevor Bauer. He allowed a three-run homer to Jonathan Villar in the third and that was it over seven innings.

"Early on he wasn't commanding," said Francona. "He was pitching from behind and paid for it. Then he really reeled it in and pitched like he can pitch. He pitched ahead, commanded his fastball, started using his breaking ball and really pitched well."

Plukto struck out six, walked one and allowed three hits.

Cobb (4-15, 5.10) was just better. He held the Indians to one hit through the first five innings. They made it a 3-2 game in the sixth on Francisco Lindor's single and Michael Brantley's sacrifice fly.

Yan Gomes and Greg Allen made the runs possible with consecutive one-out singles from the bottom of the order. Allen's single extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The inning ended when Lindor was caught stealing with Jose Ramirez at the plate. Asked what he thought of Lindor's aggressiveness, Francona said, "I like his aggressiveness, but I also like when he's safe. But again, the ballpark was playing so big today (wind blowing in from center field), that your chances of getting a single were a heck of a lot better than a home run."

The Indians had a chance to tie or take the lead in the eighth, but couldn't convert. Ramirez drew a leadoff walk and hustled to third on Yonder Alonso's one-out single to right. But the inning ended when Melky Cabrera bounced into a first-pitch 4-6-3 double play.

Should Francona have told Cabrera to at least take one pitch?

"We felt like we were in a really good spot with a ton of speed on the bases," said Francona. "You hate to ever tell a hitter to take.

"It was over so fast. But I wasn't really referring to that at-bat. We felt like we were in a great place, but eventually, we weren't. But, like I said, I don't think you can take the bat out of a guy's hands."

The Orioles added an important insurance run in the eighth when rookie Cedric Mullins hit two-out homer off Neil Ramirez for a 4-2 lead. It was the first big-league homer for Mullins and the ninth Ramirez has allowed in 31 2/3 innings.

Ramirez has allowed five of the nine homers in his last 9 2/3, which has left Francona and Ramirez frustrated.

"It's hard to figure out when he's going to give them up," said Francona. "A lot of pitchers will lead you to it. Like you see them struggling.

"But, he can strikeout two and then leave one in the middle and it gets whacked. It's frustrating. I know it's frustrating for him, because he's throwing the ball really well."

The complete-game five-hitter was Cobb's first of the season and the fourth of his career. His last complete game was Aug. 31, 2013 against the A's.

"He had a really good splitter, a curve ball he can throw at any count," said Alonso. "That's a guy right there who had a lot of rhythm and control of the strike zone. He used our aggressiveness against us."

Cobb entered Saturday's game 1-8 in his last 12 starts. The win made him 4-2 in his career against the Indians. He's 3-1 at Progressive Field.

What it means

The race in the AL West can't get any tighter, which means the Indians aren't sure where they'll be headed in the ALDS should they hang onto first place in the AL Central.

Oakland beat Houston, 7-1, at the Coliseum on Saturday to move into a first-place tie with the Astros. The A's have won two straight against the Astros, while the Houston has lost eight of its last 11 games.

The A's and Oakland are not only tied for the AL West lead, but the second wild card spot, three games behind the Yankees. The Indians trail the AL West leaders by 3 1/2 games for the right to host the best-of-five ALDS in October.

Houston still leads the season series with the A's, 9-6.

The pitches

Plutko threw 97 pitches, 60 (62 percent) for strikes. Cobb threw 99 pitches, 68 (69 percent) for strikes.

Thanks for coming

The Orioles and Indians drew a sellout crowd of 35,007 Saturday afternoon to Progressive Field. First pitch was at 4:07 p.m. with a temperature of 79.

It was the eighth sellout of the season for the Indians.

Next

Indians right-hander Mike Clevinger (8-7, 3.38) will face Orioles right-hander Yelfry Ramirez (1-4, 5.40) on Sunday in the final game of the season series between the two times. First pitch is at 1:10 p.m. with SportsTime Ohio, WTAM and WMMS carrying the game.

Fake Tweet on Trevor Bauer's recovery timetable from stress fracture of right fibula fools MLB Network, ESPN. Watch video

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A fake tweet about Trevor Bauer's injury and timetable for recovery was reported as fact by MLB Network and ESPN on Friday and the Indians' right-hander wants a retraction.

The Indians announced Friday that Bauer will miss four to six weeks with a stress fracture of his right fibula. He was hit just above his right ankle by a line drive off the bat of Jose Abreu on Aug. 11 at Guaranteed Rate Field.

After news of Bauer's timetable was released, Michael Baumann of The Ringer tweeted:

MLB Network's Quick Pitch shared the tweet as a lead-in to Friday's highlight package of the Indians' game against Baltimore. ESPN also shared the tweet on SportsCenter, reporting Baumann's statements as fact.

When Bauer saw the tweet he responded this way on social media:

Then Bauer asked for a retraction:

Baumann later tweeted:

Bauer told reporters Friday that he is "furious" about having his career season derailed by injury. When he was asked if there was any way to hasten the healing, he jokingly said, "There's a lot of stuff we're trying. Unfortunately all the good stuff is illegal. We've got to stick with the legal stuff."

When asked about his recovery timetable -- this was before manager Terry Francona said it was four to six weeks -- Bauer said: "Between tomorrow and never. We'll find out. You're going to get a very different answer if you ask me that question and the medical staff that question. Probably should defer to the doctors on that."

Bauer said he'll be back before the postseason.

Baumann's original Tweet referred to CIA nanites. Nanites are microscopic mechanisms. Colloidal silver is a reported cure-all that supposedly will boost the immune system.

Ohio State freshmen in position to crack the depth chart: Buckeyes football analysis

Doug, Bill and Tim talk about the freshmen in interesting positions during Ohio State camp. Watch video

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State wrapped up the camp portion of 2018 preseason practice on Saturday, meaning the players will be out of the off-campus team hotel and everything will be held at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center moving forward leading up to the season opener against Oregon State on Sept. 1.

So we're right around the halfway point of practice leading up to the season, and though we did not get to see a ton of practice on Saturday, we saw enough to get a vibe for the freshmen who are positioned to crack the two-deep on the depth chart.

Doug, Tim and I discussed them in the video above. We're looking at the offensive and defensive lines as the spots that could allow some early opportunity for freshmen.

I took a stab at projecting the five freshmen with a chance to play a lot this year back before camp started. If I could do it again, I'd definitely reshuffle based on what we've seen so far.

If you've missed which freshmen have been making the most progress during camp, check out our tracker of the players who've lost their black stripe and have been deemed "official" Buckeyes already. That's a good gauge for figuring out who will play this year. It's rare that a guy gets on the field before losing his black stripe.

The Cleveland Indians and Lyft have agreed on a ride-sharing deal for fans at Progressive Field.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Indians have named Lyft as the team's official ride-share partner in a deal that runs through 2019.

The deal began with this weekend's series against Baltimore.

Dedicated pickup and drop-off area is at Erie Court, across from Progressive Field's center-field gates. New users can get $5 off their first two rides. Download the Lyft app via Apple and Android devices and use the code NEWTRIBE.

In 2015 and 2017, the Indians and Uber had a ridesharing agreement.

The team says the Indians and the St. Louis Cardinals are the only Major League Baseball teams with exclusive Lyft agreements.

After this weekend, the Indians have 18 regular-season games remaining.

California-based Lyft started in 2012 and operates in hundreds of cities, including eight in Ohio.

Jarvis Landry says Josh Gordon will be ready for Steelers and Damion Ratley says 'he's a monster'

Landry has no doubt in his mind that Josh Gordon will be ready for the Steelers game Sept. 9, and rookie Damion Ratley says "he's a monster.'' Watch video

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jarvis Landry has no doubt in his mind that Josh Gordon will be ready for the opener against the Steelers Sept. 9.

"Yeah, I mean why not?'' said Landry. "He's been training this whole time, so we expect him to be ready. I'm sure he will be, but at the end of the day, we're just happy to have him back.''

Gordon returned to the Browns on Saturday, but hasn't yet been cleared to practice. For now, he's allowed to attend meetings and workouts, but not practice with the team.

On Sunday, he watched early on from the sidelines and then worked off to the side with the trainers and other players such as Denzel Ward, lifting kettebells and other apparatus. He also rode the stationery bike.

On the sidelines, Gordon was seen smiling and talking to teammates such as Landry, and his receivers coach Adam Henry. Jim Brown also stopped by to chat with him. Gordon looks to be in great spirits and excellent physical condition.

"It's great,'' said Landry. "We were looking forward to it and now that it's finally here, everybody's excited, of course.''

Landry and sixth-round receiver Damion Ratley said Gordon hasn't addressed the team since returning Saturday on the players' day off.

"No, I mean, not really,'' said Landry. "We're just going through our days, going through our meetings, walkthroughs and stuff like that. And that's really been it.''

Gordon returns to the Browns, vows to put sobriety first

Ratley said Gordon didn't need to make any big proclamations that he's back.

"He's back and sitting in his chair now,'' he said. "We're grown men, we don't need to do all that."

Ratley is also grateful for an end to the Gordon speculation.

"It's lovely, him being back,'' he said. "Adds another vet to the room, like another coach for us. Just having him back it stops people from...just the outside atmosphere of 'When's Josh coming back?' So he's back now and he's ready to play. So getting him out there is gonna be fun, get to learn from another guy besides Jarvis now. It's good having him back."

Even though Ratley was in high school when Gordon led the NFL with 1,646 yards in 2013, he's watched Gordon play live and seen him on tape.

"He's a monster,'' said Ratley. "He's big, he's fast, he's physical, he's got hands, you know, everything. He's an all -around athlete."

Gordon got no argument from Ratley when he christened the Browns receiving corps the best in the NFL during minicamp.

"Jarvis has got a lot of talent now he's got a lot of talent and there's a lot of talent in the room already like he said,'' said Ratley. "We gotta believe in ourselves of being the best unit. Coming into the room that's what we think every day."

Ratley hasn't spent a moment thinking about whether or not Dez Bryant will join the squad. A source told cleveland.com he's no longer on the front burner.

"Nah, I just wonder about what's here and play with that,'' he said. "We're a team. If he wants to join the family, come and join it, if not, then no problem. We're a unit right now, we're a family and just got another piece back - JG - so just going to keep moving forward."

Landry is also thrilled to have a player of Gordon's caliber back. It will take some heat off Landry and open things up for everyone.

"He's a proven receiver in this league, obviously,'' Landry said. "And he's a playmaker, he's a guy that's going to give us the ability to do a lot of things. We're excited about that.''

Landry was starring at LSU when Gordon was tearing up the NFL in 2013, and remembers it well.

"When you have a year, especially the one that Josh had, it brings eyes to that, it brings everybody's to it,'' he said. "He's an extremely great talent in this league and he's physically gifted and it shows. And that's what you want to see.''

He believes that he and Gordon will be co-leaders of the receiver room, which has had its share of adversity this season. Landry has already been asked by offensive coordinator Todd Haley to mentor Antonio Callaway.

"Yeah, we have to be,'' he said. "We're two of the older guys that's in the room. So for us to step up by example, if things need to be said, getting them addressed and moving forward, making plays.''

Landry agrees with Gordon that they're among the best units in the league.

"We're really strong,'' he said. "We challenge each other. Obviously, in that room, it's a very competitive room, but the thing that I love the most is the younger guys stepping up, making plays. You see (Derrick) Willies score twice. They got called back, but he scored twice. Ratley, obviously (Rashard) Higgins, Callaway, those guys have been pretty much stepped into first-team role and they're making plays that (other) guys weren't, so it's exciting.''

Landry is sympathetic to Gordon's struggles.

"It's tough and things happen,'' he said. "But it's a part of his story, it's a part of his journey. That's what makes him even that greater, seeing how it turns out, and I'm here obviously to support him through any and everything, but obviously, man, the ability that he has is unquestioned.''

As for helping Gordon stay on the straight and narrow, he "At the end of the day we're in this together and we want to win games. So whatever it takes I'm on board for it.''

He declined to share if he knew Gordon confided in him he was struggling before he left.

"Um, I mean, honestly, if he did, no offense, I wouldn't tell you guys because it's between me and him, but I'm here for him at all times, and he knows that,'' said Landry.

He believes the two will push each other to be great. Gordon, who's played only 10 games in the last four seasons, has only one TD catch in those game. He's also caught only 42 of his 89 targets in those outings, returning for five games late in 2014 and 2017.

"As I said, it's a competitive room,'' said Landry. "Josh makes it even more competitive being in there, but at the end of the day, that's what we want. We're all pushing each other to be great and find our greatness, so I'm excited about it. I'm excited to play with him. I'm excited to work with him, compete with him, and that's what's going to help us get to the level that we need to be at to win games.''

Landry said he got no pushback from Gordon when declared himself the best receiver in the NFL in May.

But Gordon may decide to let his play do the talking.

Jarvis Landry still wants Dez Bryant and is mentoring Antonio Callaway

Landry would like to add Dez Bryant and is mentoring the young Callaway.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jarvis Landry is thrilled to have Josh Gordon back, but would still love to add Dez Bryant too.

In Landry's view, the more the merrier in the quest for a Super Bowl run.

"I didn't get  chance to spend any time with him,'' Landry said. "Obviously yeah, we'd love to have him. We'd love to have him be a part of this, but for now all we can focus on are the guys that are here.''

A source told cleveland.com that the Browns really liked Bryant during his visit last week and that he's still on their radar, but they have no plans to sign him soon. Bryant's agent, Kim Miale, joined him in Cleveland, but they were unable to reach an agreement on what likely would've been a one-year deal.

"As a receiver, he makes the room that much better, he makes the team that much better,'' said Landry. "But at the same time, we have guys that make plays and that's all we can worry about, focus on right now.''

Landry say Gordon will play vs. Steelers and Ratley says 'he's a monster'

Coach Hue Jackson said Bryant's status has nothing to do with Gordon being back. The Browns will likely to continue to look at receivers given the tenuous status of both Gordon and Antonio Callaway.

As for Browns offensive coordinator Todd Haley asking Landry to mentor Callaway in a sidelines scene that was captured on the second episode of Hard Knocks, Landry has taken up the challenge.

"Ummm, it's a work in progress,'' he said. "Anytime you get younger guys in, they're going to contribute to our football team one way or the other. For me, it's obviously by example, but as many times as I can hang out with him I am. And just talking to him, being there for him whenever he needs me and challenging him. That's it.''

Devon Cajuste surprised by impact of 'Hard Knocks' story, feeds off fans who have embraced him

Cajuste's story with his father, featured on "Hard Knocks," has garnered the attention of Browns fans. Watch video

BEREA, Ohio -- Devon Cajuste has heard from plenty of people since his story went national on "Hard Knocks last Tuesday -- even his Uber driver the other night.

"He just mentioned, 'Hey, I just wanted to thank you for that,'" Cajuste said on Sunday. "So the fact that I'm touching people and it's opening them up and they feel inspired, that's the point."

He's been inspired, too, by the reaction from fans. He heard the "Juice" chant from the crowd after his 26-yard reception in the third quarter on Thursday night against Buffalo.

"There aren't words really to describe that feeling," he said, "just what the stadium erupted with I kind of absorbed all of that on the inside and it was probably one of the coolest moments."

Cajuste's story was one of the features on Episode 2 of "Hard Knocks." His father, Gregory, has had three heart attacks, a stroke and a tracheotomy and once told his son he had just five years to live. Gregory actually told Devon about the third heart attack during their interview for the show.

"When I heard that, yeah, I tried to play it off like no big deal, we'll talk later and then I'm like, what?" Cajuste said.

He had a similar reaction when he watched the episode alone in the tight ends room at the Browns training facility while everyone else was out to lunch.

"I made sure that I could have that space because I didn't know what it was going to look like, I didn't know really what they were going to utilize because there was a lot there," he said, "and I still broke down even when I watched it myself and I knew exactly what happened."

The Browns are Cajuste's third team. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers back in 2016 and, after getting waived the following September, spent 16 weeks on the Packers' practice squad that year. He signed with the Browns last January.

Before Tuesday, he was just another player trying to make a roster. Now he's getting recognized and cheered for.

"I didn't think it would get as big as it did," he said. "I thought it was just a story I'm just trying to tell."

There is a downside to this newfound recognition, though: the whistle featured on the show he and his dad used to find each other is now common knowledge.

Cajuste said that a fan behind the bench did the whistle on Thursday night and he thought his dad, who wasn't at the game, had surprised him by showing up.

"The guy just pointed at me," Cajuste said. "I was like, Ah, man, now I've got to change up the whistle."

Melky Cabrera's grand slam, Mike Clevinger's solid outing lead Cleveland Indians to 8-0 win against Baltimore Orioles

Melky Cabrera hit a grand slam in the Cleveland Indians' six-run fourth inning and Mike Clevinger held Baltimore scoreless in an 8-0 win.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Melky Cabrera delivered a grand slam for the Cleveland Indians on Sunday and Mike Clevinger slammed the door on the Baltimore Orioles in an 8-0 victory at Progressive Field.

The Tribe was already leading 4-0 when Cabrera put the game out of reach with his fourth career grand slam in the fourth inning. He he blasted the third pitch he saw from Baltimore reliever Sean Gilmartin into the left field bleachers for an eight-run Indians advantage.

Manager Terry Francona said since Cabrera's return to the lineup in July, he's been a dangerous hitter.

"He gets the barrel to the ball a lot," Francona said. "He's come up with some really big hits. I just think his ability to switch hit and make contact, it's kind of solidified us out there."

Cabrera's grand slam was the ninth this season for the Indians, lifting the team's batting average to .344 (33-for-96) with the bases loaded, including 99 RBI (third in MLB). The nine slams are tied for the most in the majors with Cincinnati and Boston.

Clevinger (9-7, 3.25) allowed Baltimore's leadoff hitter to reach base in each of the first four innings and had baserunners in every inning except the fifth. But he managed to get big strikeouts when he needed them, working six shutout frames to collect his ninth win.

It's the 13th shutout by Indians pitchers this season, which is tops in the American League. Cleveland and Pittsburgh (13) trail only the Chicago Cubs (14) for the most shutouts in the majors.

Clevinger also helped his own cause in the first inning when he picked off Orioles shortstop Jonathan Villar at first base following a one-out single. It was Clevinger's fifth pickoff of the season, ranking him fourth in the majors.

"It stops the momentum a lot," Clevinger said. "Especially when you're looking for a ground ball with one out and a guy on third. Getting a pickoff not only puts the momentum in our favor, but then you've got two outs and a fly ball gets you out of the inning versus turning into a sac fly."

Baltimore rookie Yefry Ramirez (1-5, 6.49) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and walking five. Indians center fielder Greg Allen, batting leadoff while shortstop Francisco Lindor got a day off, reached base three times against Ramirez.

Allen was hit by Ramirez's second pitch of the game and moved to second on his 11th steal of the season. He scored when Yandy Diaz rifled a fastball from Ramirez to the wall in right center for an RBI double.

In the second, Allen extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-out RBI single that plated Jason Kipnis for a 2-0 Tribe lead. The 12-game streak equals the most by a rookie in the majors this year, matching Cincinnati's Jesse Winker (July 3-21) and gave Allen his eighth RBI.

It was a solid all-around performance for Allen, who also turned in a sliding catch on a shallow pop to center by Baltimore's Chris Davis in the sixth. Allen said he's been trying to do whatever he can to contribute on a daily basis.

"I've been fortunate the last few games to just find ways to impact the game," he said. "Our guys do such a great job of making sure they capitalize when they have the chance. Any chance I have to help our team be in a position to win, I'm more than happy to do so."

Michael Brantley had two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth. Diaz added his second RBI on a bases-loaded walk ahead of Cabrera's grand slam.

Clevinger improved his record against the Orioles to 4-0, allowing one walk and scattering seven hits. He struck out seven batters and dropped his career ERA against Baltimore to 1.80, the lowest against any single opponent.

The seven strikeouts give Clevinger 155 on the year and make him the fourth Indians pitcher with at least 150. The team needed just 123 games to reach that mark, faster than 2015 (127 games) and 2016 (149).

What it means

Cleveland has won seven consecutive series and moved to 13-4 in the month of August. The Indians are 9-1 in their last 10 games and have crept to within 4 1/2 games of the No. 2 seed in the American League playoff standings.

The pitches

Ramirez threw 84 pitches, 46 (55 percent) for strikes. Clevinger threw 104 pitches, 67 (64 percent) for strikes.

Thanks for coming

The Indians and Orioles drew 30,555 fans to Progressive Field on an overcast Sunday afternoon. First pitch was at 1:10 p.m. with a game-time temperature of 77 degrees and an 8 mph wind blowing in from right field.

Next

The Indians open a seven-game road trip Monday with the first of four matchups against AL East-leading Boston at Fenway Park. Right-hander Corey Kluber (15-6, 2.68 ERA) faces the Red Sox, while righty Rick Porcello (15-5, 4.04) takes the mound for Boston.

Kluber owns a career 2-4 record and 4.45 ERA in 10 career appearances (nine starts) vs. Boston, including a 1-1 mark and 3.96 ERA in four starts at Fenway.

Gordon looks to be in excellent physical condition and good spirits during his first day back at Browns training camp. Watch video

BEREA, Ohio -- In the video above, watch Josh Gordon's first day back return to Browns training camp, where he's allowed to watch practice and participate in conditioning drills.

Gordon spent time on the sidelines talking to teammates such as Jarvis Landry and his receivers coach Adam Henry.

He worked off to the side with the trainers alongside teammates such as Denzel Ward, lifting kettlebells and other apparatus, and riding the stationery bike.

Gordon also got a warm welcome at the conditioning area from Jim Brown, who rode over on a golf cart to say hello.

Gordon looks to be in excellent physical condition and good spirits since returning from his treatment program at the University of Florida.

Landry said Sunday he has no doubt in his mind that Gordon will be on the field for the opener against the Steelers Sept. 9.

Gaines suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns cornerback E.J. Gaines was carted off on Sunday with what appeared to be a right knee injury. Gaines injured the knee breaking up a pass intended for wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

A number of Gaines' teammates came up to him while he was on the ground and head coach Hue Jackson spoke to him while he was on the ground. Jackson said after practice that he did not know the extent of Gaines' injury.

"Obviously, he was a contributing member back there (in the secondary)," Jackson said. "He was going to play and was slated to play. That is a part of the game. We do not want to see it. Hopefully, it is nothing major. We will find out more about it. It is football. I hate to lose him, but at the same time, we know that those things do happen."

Gaines played 29 defensive snaps during Friday night's preseason game against the Bills, the seventh-most among Browns defenders. He signed with the team in March after spending 2017 with Buffalo. He spent his first three years in the league with the Rams.

Hyde, Callaway practices cut short

Carlos HydeCarlos Hyde didn't finish practice on Sunday due to a shoulder injury.

Two other Browns players had their days cut short with less serious injuries.

Running back Carlos Hyde suffered a shoulder injury.

"I do not think it is anything major. Just have to be smart with some of these guys," Jackson said.

Callaway did not participate in team drills after participating in individual. Jackson said Callaway's groin was getting tight. Damion Ratley took reps with the first team in Callaway's place.

"Ratley made some plays today," Jackson said. "That was good to see. He needs to keep growing and keep getting better."

Check here for the Top 125 for the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs 2018. Ryan Armour, from Walsh Jesuit and Ohio State, is No. 37.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose and Bubba Watson are Nos. 1-5 for FedExCup Playoffs 2018, which begin next week at The Northern Trust. Among others in the full field, which consists of the top 125 in the standings: Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Ryan Armour, Jason Kokrak and Jason Dufner.

Four events comprise the FedExCup Playoffs. The field is cut to 100 after The Northern Trust; to 70 after the Dell Technologies Championship; and to 30 after the BMW Championship. The top 30 play in the TOUR Championship.

Thomas has won three times this season, including the final WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron.

Koepka won two majors this season -- the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. He went back-to-back at the U.S. Open.

Bills defenders call Jarvis Landry's block 'dirty' and 'B.S.'

Bills defenders took exception to Jarvis Landry's block on rookie cornerback Taron Johnson, which they felt was an illegal crackback.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jarvis Landry has received high praise for his monster block on Carlos Hyde's 4-yard touchdown run against the Bills Friday night, but Bills' defenders had other choice names for it.

They called the block on rookie cornerback Taron Johnson "dirty'' "B.S." and "ridiculous.''

Johnson, who was slow to get up, said Landry later apologized to him, according to ESPN. He walked off the field with trainers, but later returned to the field.

"Landry, he's a good receiver, physical guy, but some of those plays that he has -- Aaron Williams, Taron, I'm pretty sure he has other ones -- I just think they're dirty," Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said Sunday, via ESPN. "Coming from the outside of the box in, the league needs to do a better job of calling penalties on those types of plays.

"Obviously defenders get called all the time on stuff that is probably less egregious than that. If we're going to protect our football players, we need to protect everybody, not just offensive guys.''

He added, "It was dirty at the end of the day, and that's how I feel about it."

The Bills have a history with Landry and vicious blocks from his Dolphins days.
In 2016, Landry delivered an illegal crackback block on Williams, causing the former Bills' safety to suffer head and neck injuries. Landry, who also apologized for that block, $24,309.

On Friday night, Landry came down inside, led with his shoulder and hit the unsuspecting cornerback high. He was not flagged for the hit, and has received "a lot of'' praise for it. The Browns tweeted out the block, describing it as "incredible.''

"I pride myself on being a complete receiver, and it takes those types of plays, making those types of blocks, or just a block period, to make sure Carlos could get in, or Duke (Johnson), whoever's running the ball, or another receiver,'' Landry said Sunday. "It's important.''

Bills' safety Micah Hyde also ripped the block.

"That's ridiculous," Hyde said Sunday. "Because if a defensive player does that to an offensive player, he's getting ejected. I don't care if he lowered his shoulder or not. He's coming all the way from No. 1, past the numbers, and flying down onto the hashes and cleaning up somebody. That's the same as that play that Aaron Williams got hit on a couple years back and basically ruined his career.

"To me, that's B.S. You can't do that. All you have to do is get into position, screen him off. He doesn't have to come in and try to kill anybody."

Johnson, however, blamed it on himself.

"I just got to be more aggressive on that play, that's the main thing," he said. "It's still football, at the end of the day. So stuff like that happens sometimes. I have no animosity toward him at all."

Cleveland Indians OF Leonys Martin set to be released Sunday from Cleveland Clinic

Leonys Martin is set to be released Sunday from Cleveland Clinic after undergoing treatment for a life-threatening bacterial infection.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Leonys Martin was set to be released Sunday from Cleveland Clinic after undergoing treatment for a life-threatening bacterial infection, Cleveland Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said.

Martin took to Twitter on Sunday evening to show appreciation for those who have supported him.

"I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes while I was hospitalized," Martin tweeted. "I am glad to be feeling better and am looking forward to rehab."

Martin fell ill Aug. 7 when the infection entered his blood and produced toxins that attacked his internal organs. He was placed on the disabled list two days later.

"To think about the progress he's made over the past week, it's been nothing short of amazing," Antonetti said, adding that the team does not yet have much in the way of additional details about what a plan for Martin will look like moving forward.

"He'll have a series of followup checks this week with doctors, just to continue to monitor his health," Antonetti said. "At some point we'll begin to think about how we build up his activity and see where that leads us."

Martin was acquired in a July 31 trade with the Detroit Tigers along with minor league pitcher Kyle Dowdy in exchange for infielder Willi Castro. He appeared in six games for the Indians, batting .333 with two home runs and four RBI.

Antonetti said Martin is already asking about when he can return to baseball.

"He's been champing at the bit, even before he was fully lucid," Antonetti said. "He's been really anxious to get back to be around the team and get back to playing baseball."

Manager Terry Francona and bench coach Brad Mills visited Martin on Thursday along with a large contingent of Indians players in his room at Cleveland Clinic. Antonetti said he also stopped by Friday to check in on Martin.

"He was great, if you didn't know anything was wrong, other than the IV he had connected, you wouldn't have known anything different," Antonetti said. "He was able to walk up and down the hallway a little bit and every day he continues to get better. He still has progress he needs to make to get back to full health, but it's been a really encouraging week."

Antonetti said visiting with teammates and coaches lifted Martin's spirits.

"It's beyond a relief, especially given where things were a week ago," he said. "He continues to draw energy from that and I know he's really motivated to get back healthy and begin building up his activity."

Antonetti made sure to temper any excitement about progress Martin has made thus far.

"We're in uncharted waters," he said. "There's no precedent you can look back to and say, 'What does a return to activity look like?' It's very much going to continue to be day to day."
