Powell played at Ohio State after starring at Bedford High School.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have claimed defensive back Tyvis Powell via waivers from Seattle, the team announced on Monday. Powell played high school football at Bedford and attended Ohio State.

Powell signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent last season. He appeared in eight games with Seattle and spent the entire season on the team's active roster. He recorded three special teams tackles.

Powell led Ohio State in interceptions with three during his final season in Columbus. He appeared in 42 games with the Buckeyes.

Powell tweeted after the announcement:

"THERE'S A GOD!!! #BlessedByTheBest #ClevelandMadeClevelandPaid"

He also tweeted a photo of next season's Super Bowl odds, which have the Browns tied with the 49ers as the least likely team to win the Super Bowl, at cornerback Joe Haden with the quote:

"Hey @joehaden23 let's get to work. We have some doubters we have to make BELIEVERS!!"

Joe Thomas on Justin Gilbert getting waived by Steelers: 'If you don't like football, star will burn out quickly'

Joe Thomas tweets that Justin Gilbert's star burned out quickly because he didn't love football. Watch video

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Just days after Johnny Manziel was selling autographs at Houston malls and hoping to get back into football, his fellow 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert is currently without a team too.

Traded to the Steelers in September for a 2018 sixth round pick, Gilbert was waived Monday by them with a year left on his rookie contract.

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas, who's become increasingly vocal in recent years, summed it best when he tweeted, "If you don't like football, it doesn't matter how talented you are, your star will burn out quick.''

Gilbert, the No. 8 overall pick in 2014, will go down in history as one of the worst Browns' first-round picks ever. But he's just the latest in a long string of failed first rounders, which is a major reason they went 1-15 last season.

He follows in the footsteps of Manziel, the No. 22 overall pick that year and 2012 No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson, who are both also out of football. Gilbert and Manziel were drafted by former Browns general manager Ray Farmer, who's also currently out of the league.

2013 first-round pick Barkevious Mingo was traded to the Patriots in August and played on special teams for New England.

Former Browns defenders Donte Whitner and Karlos Dansby both predicted the quick demise of Manziel and Gilbert when they referred to their "wasted rookie years.''

"When you're a first-round pick, you've got to c'mon, man'' Dansby said in 2014. "They've got to reset their goals and they've got to do it fast. There's so much (Gilbert) could've done better and he didn't put forth the effort. So yeah, it's a wasted year.

"Like Johnny said the same thing, it's a wasted year for him. That's how he feels. He's like 'damn, I've got to take this more seriously. I've wasted all this time.' That's basically what he's saying. So it's like 'don't waste your time man, because it's precious bro. You never know when you're going to be done. You're one play away from never playing this game again.''

Johnny Manziel: Selling autographs, apologizing to Browns teammates and what NFL execs think of his chances

Gilbert admitted at the end of 2015 that he was late to numerous team meetings as a rookie because he was "a hard sleeper.''

He was also inactive one game for being late.

Gilbert played in 12 games for the Steelers this season, mostly on special teams. He was due a $1.2 million roster bonus soon. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Steelers don't owe him anything going forward.

Quinn Cook, Eric Moreland of Canton Charge named D-League All-Stars

Cook, averaging 25.8 points, second highest in the D-League, will be making his second appearance in the annual exhibition.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Quinn Cook and Eric Moreland, two members of the Cleveland Cavaliers' D-League affiliate Canton Charge, will be heading to New Orleans for the Developmental League All-Star Game during NBA All-Star weekend.

Cook, averaging 25.8 points, second highest in the D-League, will be making his second straight appearance in the annual exhibition. Last year's D-League Rookie of the Year will be part of the 12-man East team, coached by Jerry Stackhouse of the Raptors 905.

Moreland, second in the league in rebounding (11.7 per game) and fourth in blocks (2.3), will be joining Cook.

Nine players with NBA experience have been selected to participate, including Dallas Mavericks point guard Yogi Ferrell, who will reportedly receive a two-year contract following the expiration of his 10-day contract.

Cleveland native JaKarr Sampson, who played at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School before finishing at a New Hampshire prep school, has also been selected as part of the West team.

The D-League All-Stars are chosen by a vote of the league's 22 head coaches and all players. A player must be on an active D-League roster at the time of the All-Star game to be eligible to play in it.

The game is set for Feb. 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

LeBron James wasted little time getting a highlight dunk against Washington.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James wasted little time Monday in producing a highlight dunk against the Washington Wizards.

With just more than two minutes gone by in the first quarter, Tristan Thompson grabbed a rebound and kicked the ball ahead to James.

James accelerated down the middle of the court, dribbled around All-Star guard John Wall and crushed home a two-handed dunk over Washington's Markieff Morris.

The dunk gave Cleveland an early 9-4 lead.

James has three points, two rebounds and two assists midway through the first period.

Jaiden Woodbey, teammate of Ohio State signee Wyatt Davis, announces commitment to Buckeyes

Four-star Jaiden Woodbey, the No. 3-rated safety in the 2018 recruiting class in the 247Sports composite rankings, announced his commitment to Ohio State on Monday evening.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State signed five-star offensive line Wyatt Davis of Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco in the 2017 recruiting class.

Now the Buckeyes have another from that high school.

Four-star Jaiden Woodbey, the No. 3-rated safety in the 2018 recruiting class in the 247Sports composite rankings, announced his commitment to Ohio State on Monday evening.

Woodbey chose the Buckeyes over Nebraska, Oklahoma and USC.

"This has truly been an amazing journey," Woodbey wrote on Twitter. "From putting on my football pads as a young seven-year-old boy to now. This entire process has been a real blessing. Beginning Oct. 5 of 2015, when I received by first offer, to the present day where I have the chance to shape my future.

"I'm nowhere hear finished in this journey, but I believe this is a big first step in becoming the man and the player I've always dreamed of being. First and foremost, I want to thank God for everything he has provided me in my life, including an incredibly supportive family.

"I would also ike to thank the Ground Zero organization for building me into the athlete that I am today. Another thank you goes to my track coaches Ronald and Tarina Brown and my youth football coach Rodney Harris for being the first people to believe in my, even when nobody else did.

"This college decision has been extremely hard due to all of the amazing programs that have given me an opportunity to excel as a student and athlete at their elite institutions. Overall, there is one school that shines about the rest in terms of their academics, academics, athletics and spiritual aspects. For that reason, the school I will represent on Saturdays and earn my degree from will be The Ohio State university."

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound prospect unofficially visited Ohio State on Jan. 28 for Urban Meyer's junior day, the final weekend before National Signing Day. Ohio State had the momentum with the talented defender ever since.

Ohio State now has three commitments in its 2018 recruiting class. The other two are five-star quarterback Emory Jones of Franklin (Ga.) Heard County and four-star running back Brian Snead of Seffner (Fla.) Armwood.

The fact the Buckeyes have three high-profile commitments from out-of-state means the class is off to a very fast start, especially when considering that in-state Ohio talent is stacked in 2018.

Tyronn Lue has 'museum' of Michael Jordan memorabilia

Tyronn Lue has 'museum' of stuff from Michael Jordan and other NBA greats. Watch video

WASHINGTON -- Tyronn Lue played for the Wizards for the right two seasons: the two Michael Jordan also played here.

And Lue has the memorabilia to prove it.

"Jersey and the shoes, nice," Lue said, before the Cavs played the Wizards Monday night.

Lue and Jordan played for the Wizards from 2001-03. For Jordan, maybe the greatest to ever play in the NBA, Washington was his swan song. For Lue, a journey NBA point guard, it was just the second stop of several around the league.

Asked Monday what he remembered about playing in Washington Lue said "Jordan."

"He brought all the energy to the city, to the games, sold out for two straight years," Lue said. "I think they had lost money five straight years, and his two years being back they made up for all of that."

As for Jordan's game-worn gear, Lue said he received multiple pairs of game-worn, signed Air Jordan's, as well as game-worn jerseys from Jordan for both the Wizards and Chicago Bulls.

If you're wondering, quick Google searches showed a game-worn Jordan Wizards jersey available for $11,640, and autographed Jordan shoes for $8,700.

"I earned it by playing hard every night," Lue said. "That's all I could give him. That's how I earned it."

Lue, who played 11 seasons, is proud of his NBA memorabilia collection, with items from, among other players, Kobe Bryant.

"I got a nice museum," he said. "Got a good collection, a very very nice collection. I pride myself on that collection. One day I'll show you."

Is Tom Brady the greatest quarterback of all-time?

$

With a career 97.2 quarterback rating, 12 Pro Bowl appearances, seven Super Bowl appearances, and two MVP awards--many are saying Brady is the greatest quarterback of all-time.

After the New England Patriots epic 34-28 comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons, Tom Brady captured a record-breaking fifth Super Bowl championship. With a career 97.2 quarterback rating, 12 Pro Bowl appearances, seven Super Bowl appearances, and two MVP awards--many are saying Brady is the greatest quarterback of all-time. But critics argue Brady owes most of his success to coach Bill Belichick, and scandals like Spygate and Deflategate tarnished his legacy. What do you think? [?]

PERSPECTIVES

On paper, Brady is easily one of the most accomplished quarterbacks of all-time. Now he has more Super Bowl rings than Joe Montana. He's also a four-time Super Bowl MVP, two-time All-Pro selection, two-time offensive player of the year, comeback player of the year and was elected to the all-decade team. He's got the honors...

... but he was also suspended for the first four games of the season for his role in Deflategate. And Brady is at the center of a team dogged by sporting scandals. Haters say all of that shifty organizational behavior has tarnished Brady's legacy--not to mention that Brady's replacements have managed to play just as well in Bill Belichick's scheme. His harshest critics will say he's just a byproduct of all-time great coaching. Even Montana was able to win outside of the 49ers franchise.

What do you think?

Every record Tom Brady broke in his fifth Super Bowl win >>

playoff-passes.jpg

But let's get real. Brady didn't just win his fifth Super Bowl ring, he played the greatest football game ever. No one has come from behind like that in Super Bowl history. But Brady did. It's easy to hate on Brady because his personality is brash and his behavior is polarizing. The Patriots organization can also be shifty. But we need to appreciate what he just did and award him his natural place as the greatest of all-time.

Brady, like the rest of us, has his flaws. He can be teased for underinflating footballs, dogged for evading questions about his pal Donald Trump and doubted for decisions in his personal life made when he was younger. But he is an impregnable competitor. He took a beating Sunday night and faced certain doom and, at that moment, at age 39, played quarterback at a level rarely attained before.
kilgore.jpg

But behavior matters. Anyone who is awarded the greatest should be able to demonstrate that they are the difference-maker on offense and can remain calm under pressure. Brady has never truly won without the coaching of Bill Belichick or a Pro Bowl defense behind him. In fact, he's collapsed under pressure several times throughout his 16-year career. He lost two Super Bowls to the Giants. And more importantly, he hasn't proven he can win on his own and fairly. You can't be GOAT with an asterisk, and Deflategate, Spygate, etc. will always give critics enough ammo to question Brady's character.

There is another legendary QB with four rings (Joe Montana) and a handful of Hall of Famers with two or three rings (Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, for some examples). Those guys earned rings without the constant accusations of cheating, which should be worth something in the argument of "greatest ever."

New Brown Tyvis Powell loves everything, but he really loves the Browns: Doug Lesmerises

The former Bedford High and Ohio State safety was claimed by the Browns on Monday, joining the team he always loved. Watch video

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Know your hilarious friend, the one who's always laughing and cracking jokes, the guy you invite to watch the game because he knows what's up and he'll make sure everyone has a good time?

That guy plays for the Browns now.

Tyvis Powell loves everything, but there are few things he loves as much as he loves the Browns. One of the most infectious personalities I've ever met in sports is the newest member of the Cleveland secondary, and, by the way, I think he can play.

Released by Seattle at the end of his rookie year after starting for three seasons at Ohio State, Powell now plays for the team that every year he used to predict would go 16-0.

Again, he really loves the Browns.

"Don't get me wrong," Sean Williams, the Bedford High School football coach and Powell's mentor, said Monday, "he loved Seattle. But he was so mad, I think hurt, when the Browns didn't pick him up in the sixth or seventh round, now to come back home and be part of fixing and repairing this whole thing, you can believe how excited he is."

If Powell can't play he won't stay, but at the NFL Combine in 2016, Powell tested well and proved to be more athletic than I realized. At Ohio State's Pro Day, to my eye, he looked as fluid as future first-rounder Eli Apple. And then he went undrafted.

Teams called to express free agent interest and he picked Seattle, hoping to be mentored by Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas. He was, with the Seahawks even moving the 6-foot-3 lifetime safety to corner, though he only saw game action on special teams. But Seattle, apparently, got infected by Powell as well. Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times called Powell, "a player many in the front office fell in love with the day he signed."

A numbers crunch led to his release in January. No waiver claims are announced during the playoffs, but how did the Browns get him? Because they were the worst team in the league. The first team with a shot took him. So the NFL thinks Powell can play.

He's genuinely funny (see the video at the top from when he picked off roommate Cardale Jones in Ohio State's spring football game), but he's not some guy just coming in to cut up the locker room. Powell was a captain his final season at Ohio State, a three-year starter who earned his job as a redshirt freshman by impressing Urban Meyer in the offseason. Safeties coach Chris Ash thought Powell a bit of a clown when he was hired after the 2013 season, but he came to know otherwise.

"Until you really get to know Tyvis, that's the impression you get," Ash said in 2015. "Because he is very intelligent, he's very witty and he makes good jokes. Now that I know him, Tyvis is a very serious dude. He's a pretty driven, highly motivated guy."

Williams, who has talked to Powell basically every day since he left high school, said Powell is so excited about the move that he is insisting on living in Cleveland. No Bedford, no other suburbs.

"I want to see my work," Powell told Williams. "I want to be able to walk to the stadium."

"You practice in Berea," Williams told him.

"I don't care," Powell said.

They've been working out together for weeks to prepare for what's next.

"It's been high school all over again," Williams said.

So he's invested in all of this, in the game, in the community, in the team he's always loved. Powell's arrival was announced on the same day Browns tackle Joe Thomas tweeted of Justin Gilbert after the former Browns first-rounder was released by Pittsburgh, "If you don't like football, it doesn't matter how talented you are, your star will burn out quick.''

Consider Powell the anti-Gilbert then.

* Relive Powell's journey from Bedford to the Buckeyes to the Browns

Powell loves football. He loves Cleveland. He loves the Browns. He loves everything.

"When people in Cleveland get to know him, they're going to love him," Williams said. "You need that enthusiasm. You need people who want to be here, who want to play for the Browns, who want to see Cleveland do well."

Powell won't be the first Browns fan to slip on the orange and brown. The Browns want a locker room full of guys who care. But it will be hard to find anyone who cares more about this. Cares about football, about Cleveland, about the Browns, about everything.

You know the type. Now one of those guys is on your team.

LeBron James banked home a fadeaway 3-pointer to tie the Washington Wizards at 120-120.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- LeBron James hit a fadeaway 3-pointer off glass as time ticked away in the fourth quarter Monday to tie the score at 120-120 and force overtime against the Washington Wizards.

James, who moments earlier had missed a wide-open layup at the rim that would have given Cleveland the lead, redeemed himself with a shot that was nothing short of miraculous.

James fouled out early in the overtime period with 32 points, 17 assists (career high) and seven rebounds. Per ESPN, it is just the fifth time in James' career (1,034 regular season games) that he's fouled out of a game.

Kyrie Irving sank a familiar looking three-point shot in overtime against Washington.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- With LeBron James on the bench after fouling out early in overtime Monday, Kyrie Irving took over for the Cleveland Cavaliers, draining a carbon copy of his clutch NBA Finals winning shot to help beat the Washington Wizards.

Irving got the ball on the left wing outside the 3-point line and rocked Wizards guard Bradley Beal to sleep with a dribble before stepping back and hitting a long triple to give the Cavaliers a 136-133 lead.

The shot was immediately reminiscent of Irving's three from the same spot in Game 7 of the NBA Finals against Golden State.

Irving finished with 23 points on a rough shooting night (8-for-24 from the floor). The Cavaliers snapped Washington's 17-game home winning streak.

Had to see the Cavs' 140-135 OT win over Wizards to believe it

Kyrie Irving scored 11 of 23 points in overtime and Cavs snapped the Wizards' 17-game home winning streak.

WASHINGTON -- The Cavs aren't so good when LeBron James doesn't play.

But when he plays his tail off, pulls out one of the most incredible shots you've seen in a regular-season game to send it to overtime, and then fouls out for the first time in three years, the Cavs are golden.

Kyrie Irving scored 11 of his 23 points in the extra session while James watched from the bench, and Cleveland pulled out a 140-135 victory over the Washington Wizards on Monday night.

Watch: LeBron's fadeaway 3 to force OT

Kevin Love paced Cleveland with 39 points to go with 12 rebounds. His two foul shots with 3.6 seconds to go sealed it.

James finished with 32 points and a career-high 17 assists, and passed former Cavs coach and NBA great Lenny Wilkens (7,211 assists) for 13th on the NBA's all-time assists list. He added seven rebounds and was 12-of-18 from the field; 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

James fouled out within the first minute of overtime. He hadn't done that since Jan. 10, 2014 in Brooklyn. He still played for the Miami Heat then.

Tristan Thompson scored a season-high 22 points and also grabbed 12 boards for the Cavs (35-15) .

Iman Shumpert suffered a sprained left ankle late in the third quarter and did not return. Keep an eye on that injury.

The Wizards had win streaks of seven games overall and 17 at home snapped. Bradley Beal led everyone with 41 points. John Wall added 22 points and 12 assists and Otto Porter Jr. scored 25.

Irving again drained a 3-pointer from the right with everything riding on it (not, like, say Game 7 of the Finals everything, but you get the drift) to put the Cavs ahead by three points with less than a minute remaining. He missed a runner but corralled the rebound and was fouled with 10.2 seconds left, and drained both free throws.

With .9 seconds left in regulation, James caught a full-court heave from Love and turned over Beal for a banked-in 3-pointer that stunned the Verizon Center and effectively sent the game to overtime.

James had just blown a layup on Cleveland's previous possession, a bunny from the left side with 4.9 seconds to go, and it should've sunk the Cavs. Except James (and, it should be said, Love) pulled off maybe the play of the regular season so far.

James scored 13 points in an insane fourth quarter, including a 4-of-4 effort from 3-point range. The Cavs drained eight 3-pointers in the fourth; the Wizards answered with three treys (and 38 points).

After a Love 3-pointer with 1:16 left put the Cavs ahead 116-112, James and Love jumped in the air for a chest bump in celebration as they headed to the bench for a timeout.

It's notable because during the game, the New York Daily News, citing an unnamed source, reported that James was pushing the Cavs to trade for Anthony, even if it meant trading Love. Two Cleveland sources, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, strongly denied the report.

The Cavs trailed by as many as nine in the third quarter, but reeled off a 19-4 run over a four-minute stretch to take the lead and set up that crazy fourth quarter. Love had 15 points and six boards in the third.

Cleveland has won five of six.

NEXT: Game 3 of this four-game road trip is Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Indianapolis against the Pacers.

LeBron James calls Kevin Love, Carmelo Anthony trade report 'trash'

LeBron James vehemently denied a report that he was pushing the Cavs to trade for his friend Carmelo Anthony, even if it meant shipping out Kevin Love to get him. Watch video

WASHINGTON -- LeBron James vehemently denied a report that he was pushing the Cavs to trade for his friend Carmelo Anthony, even if it meant shipping out Kevin Love to get him.

"It's trash," James said, after the Cavs beat the Wizards 140-135 in overtime. "And the guy who wrote it is trash too, for writing that, especially during the game like that. So it's always about outside noise and that's just outside noise for us."

During the first half of the Cavs-Wizards game, the New York Daily News reported that James was pushing the Cavs to trade for Anthony, even if it meant trading Love, citing an unnamed source. Two Cleveland sources, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, strongly denied the report during the game.

The unnamed sources don't matter now because, well, James went on camera and said what he said. A third source close to James later said he has never asked the Cavs to trade for Anthony, one of his closest friends in the NBA.

Love called the report "a lie" and coach Tyronn Lue said of Love: "he's not going anywhere."

Love, 28, an All-Star, has been rumored as a possible trade candidate for the past several days and weeks, mostly as a potential piece to acquire Anthony. Cavs sources suggest they're not interested in trading Love for Anthony -- who is older and more expensive -- but have stopped short of declaring Love would not be traded at all.

James was asked Monday if he could imagine the Cavs without Love, and James said "nope."

So perhaps now is the time for general manager David Griffin to put the Love trade rumors to rest by declaring he will not be moved by the Feb. 23 deadline, as Sacramento Kings general manager Vlade Divac did with DeMarcus Cousins Monday night.

At any rate, the way Monday's game unfolded, no Cav would be in the mood to consider moving Love at the moment.

Love led the Cavs with 39 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and like James drained six 3-pointers. Love also connected with James (32 points, 17 assists) on one of the plays of the year -- a full-court heave from out of bounds to James that he caught, spun, and banked a 3-pointer off of with .9 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

About a minute earlier in the fourth, after Love knocked down a 3-pointer off a pass from James, the two met for a mid-air chest bump on their way to a bench during a timeout.

It didn't appear at that particular moment that James was trying to push him out the door.

"What do they say? A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put his pants on," Love said, quoting Winston Churchill (the quote is actually attributable to multiple people, including Churchill). "So, it's a lie. If 'Bron is having any problem with me, I mean, it's just not true. It's almost laughable. I'm on this team. I'm going to be on this team and we want to win with the guys that we have. So, I think tonight was a big win for us. We're not going to let that take away from this being a good step forward."

James has publicly called for the Cavs to add a playmaker, and separately for a backup point guard and extra big man. By "playmaker," he means a role player who can help generate offense for others and is versatile.

"We gotta focus on what needs to be done and that's to continue to compete for a championship," James said. "And we got who we got. Our GM will do a great job of figuring out if we need something else but right now we're in a good place."

Kevin Love continues to improve on defense and Kyrie Irving rises without LeBron James: Fedor's five observations

Following a drama-filled January, and in the midst of "trash" trade speculation surrounding Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony, the Cavaliers delivered one of their most impressive wins of the season, showing that "championship DNA" during a 140-135 back-and-forth thrill ride victory.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Members of the Cleveland Cavaliers don't know exactly how to explain it. But the champs continue to play their best when facing adversity, sending another reminder of that Monday against the red-hot Washington Wizards.

Following a drama-filled January, in the midst of "trash" trade speculation surrounding Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony, the Cavaliers delivered an impressive win, showing that "championship DNA" during a 140-135 back-and-forth thrill ride.

Here are five observations:

Love's defense - Love continues to shrug off trade rumors with humorous responses.

"It's good to be wanted," he said before leaving for the four-game roadtrip.

Since being mentioned in the latest Carmelo-to-Cleveland speculation, Love has tallied 62 points on 18-of-33 from the field, including 10-of-17 from 3-point range and 16-of-17 from the free-throw line to go with 28 rebounds.

And while his offensive performance was vital, especially in the fourth quarter as he poured in eight points while Kyrie Irving continued to struggle, Love's defense was the most pleasant surprise.

The Wizards led by three. Their offense was humming in overtime.

That's when Love switched onto Washington All-Star John Wall. It looked like a mismatch the Wizards wanted. Instead, Love moved his feet, just the way he did on his isolation stop against Stephen Curry in the NBA Finals, and forced Wall into a missed step-back jumper.

On the ensuing possession, following a Kyle Korver 3-pointer to tie the game, the Cavaliers power forward looked to be on an island again. This time against Bradley Beal, who scored a game-high 41 points.

The Wizards shooting guard drove into the lane and took a tough turn-around fadeaway that clanked off the side of the rim.

Those two defensive stops helped halt Washington's momentum and fueled a 5-0 run.

Seasonal improvement - Love's defense has been questioned since coming to Cleveland. He's often been one of the players opposing offenses will choose to attack.

Is it time to rethink that?

Part of his recent success has to do with his teammates -- having Tristan Thompson anchoring the defense and LeBron James, who is capable of erasing a plethora of mistakes.

However, Love deserves credit for the growth as well.

According to ESPN's defensive real plus minus, which is measured by points allowed per 100 defensive possessions, Love ranks second among all Cavaliers and around 50th overall out of more than 400 players graded.

The on court/off court numbers back it up.

With Love on the court this season, the Cavs are holding opponents to 50.3 effective field goal shooting and an offensive rating of 105.1.

With him off the floor, the opponents' effective field goal shooting goes up to 52.2 percent while the offensive rating climbs to 112.0.

As is the case with other statistics, there are plenty of reasons.

Love typically rests with Thompson and the defense naturally slips without the starting center. Also, Love doesn't play much alongside Channing Frye, who has one of the worst defensive ratings on the team.

But given the criticism he has faced, Love deserves praise for holding opposing players to 45.2 percent from the field.

Irving rises - He had scored 12 points on 5-of-18 from the field, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range in 39 suspect minutes.

Then came overtime, an opportunity to redeem himself, especially after James' fouled out.

Irving awoke.

On the first offensive possession, he dribbled repeatedly, drove into the lane, took a bump and threw up a wild shot. The whistle went his way and he buried both free throws to cut Washington's lead to two, giving him some confidence.

That was just the beginning of his personal run, eventually scoring 11 of the team's 20 overtime points, including another clutch 3-pointer from the right wing, his patented spot.

Even the attempt he missed late, which Thompson kept alive on the glass, led to Irving going to the foul line for two key free throws. He made both, increasing his shooting numbers to 43-of-44 from the stripe during OT in his career.

Irving ended the night with 23 points on 8-of-24, including 2-of-7 from 3. But he saved his best for last.

That's usually the case. Sometimes he can be maddening, ignoring teammates and giving questionable effort on the defensive end. It's not always pretty and his over-dribbling has a tendency to lead to mistakes. It's part of why Irving has become one of the league's most polarizing players.

Then again, that style has birthed a cold-blooded assassin, a player at his best in pressure-packed moments. His one-on-one scoring ability is unmatched and the Wizards learned that even on an off night Irving can strike at any moment.

Tristan's offense - Thompson has become an offensive weapon lately.

The beneficiary of Cleveland's floor spacing and lethal pick-and-roll game, Thompson scored a season-high 22 points on 10-of-13 from the field, including 2-of-4 from the free-throw line Monday.

He has now reached double figures in three straight.

The last time he had an offensive stretch like this was last year, as he recorded seven straight double-figure games, a run that went from Feb. 29 until March 13.

Looking for 3's - The Cavs went 19-of-38 from 3-point range. James had a career-high 17 assists. Those two stats are related.

Understanding the Wizards were trying to take driving lanes away, James often searched for the long ball.

That was the idea when the roster was assembled and it's part of the reason why Love has always been an ideal fit as the third member of Cleveland's devastating trio.

Love's floor spacing puts opponents in a bind and his long range shooting was on display against the Wizards, drilling six triples.

James assisted on five of those six makes, including an excellent find late. The made basket gave the Cavs a four-point lead with a little more than a minute remaining.

In all, eight of James' 17 helpers led to 3-pointers.

Iman Shumpert suffered sprained left ankle, left arena on crutches

Iman Shumpert suffered a sprained left ankle late in the third quarter of the Cavs' 140-135 win in overtime Monday night and did not return to the game.

WASHINGTON -- Iman Shumpert suffered a sprained left ankle late in the third quarter of the Cavs' 140-135 win in overtime Monday night and did not return to the game.

An X-ray on Shumpert's ankle was negative, but he left the Verizon Center with his left foot in a protective boot and with the help of crutches. He appeared to suffer the injury after stepping on Kevin Love's foot while trying to defend a nasty, stepback move for a jumper by Washington's Bradley Beal.

The Cavs are off Tuesday and play the Pacers in Indianapolis on Wednesday. If Shumpert is going to be out for any length of time, it would leave the team with just 11 healthy players.

That's a predicament the Cavs have faced -- playing with four fewer players than the NBA allows -- several times over the past two months. It remains to be seen if general manager David Griffin would sign someone to a 10-day contract if Shumpert is going to miss more than one game.

Last week, free agent wing Lance Stephenson worked out for the Cavs.

Shumpert did not score against the Wizards in 24 minutes. He took two shots and didn't have an assist, either.

Shumpert, inserted into the starting lineup at shooting guard Jan. 13, is shooting a career-best .431 from the field and .405 from 3-point range this season.

Coach Tyronn Lue could choose to start Kyle Korver in Shumpert's place (13 points Monday night), though Lue has said he prefers to bring Korver off the bench as a scorer with the second unit. In that case, DeAndre Liggins could return to the lineup if Shumpert is out.

The Cavs' game-saving 'touchdown' play, from Kevin Love to LeBron James

The Cavs tied Monday's eventual 140-135 overtime win against Washington on a play they call 'touchdown.' Watch video

WASHINGTON -- LeBron James spent the morning on Monday talking about Tom Brady, commenting on how "calm" the Patriots' Super Bowl-winning quarterback stays at any moment during a game.

So it stands to reason that James would pull off one of the plays of the year in the NBA later that night on a play the Cavs call "touchdown."

James caught a, well, a touchdown pass from Kevin Love, spun over Bradley Beal and banked in a 3-pointer with .3 seconds left to force overtime of the Cavs' eventual 140-135 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Cleveland was out of timeouts and John Wall had just sunk two free throws. Love grabbed the ball and tossed a two-handed chest pass to James, way at the other end of the court, who caught it on the right wing and made his move, then the shot.

"That's our play, touchdown," said Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, an admirer of Patriots coach Bill Belichick. "We ran touchdown. Wasn't quite in the right spots, but we was in it good enough. Kevin threw a great pass. Bron was supposed to come up and fake the screen and then slip over the top. He ran a little bit of it, got to his spot and then Kevin made a helluva pass and he made a great shot."

James finished with 32 points and a career-high 17 assists. He fouled out in overtime for the first time in three years and blew a layup with 4.9 seconds in regulation that could've put the Cavs ahead.

"It was a point-blank layup, missed it, and I was blessed to be in a position where I can make up for it and Kev gave me a great pass," James said. "It's a play that we work on in practice and just trust my, uh, you see me practicing it all the time during, at the facility, so it was able to go in."

The thing is, the Cavs rarely practice. And their session for Tuesday in Washington is canceled after four of their five starters played 40-plus minutes against the Wizards.

So when they do practice, they must make those "touchdown" reps count.

Then there's Love, whose middle name is Wesley, named after former Washington Wizards great Wes Unseld (a teammate of Love's father, Stan) -- who made a name for himself as an outlet passer.

Love said as a child he played three levels above his age in youth basketball with his older brother and couldn't yet shoot one handed over his head, so he developed the two-handed outlet pass you see today by shooting that way.

"I told Ty actually that, 'I can make the pass,'" Love said. "I saw LeBron had single coverage. He's so good at putting that hand up and receiving that ball and he made a great play. He had the presence of mind to come down with it, get to the 3-point line and those of you guys, you don't get to see our practices every day but he practices those shots and a lot of times makes them pretty effortlessly.

"So that was a huge, huge shot, a huge moment and a big play that puts us into overtime."

The overtime belonged mostly to Kyrie Irving, who scored 11 of his 23 points in the extra session. Irving said "I know everyone in the crowd, everyone here too was shaking their head like 'what a shot.'"

Kelly Oubre Jr., a Wizards sub who was on the court at the end of the fourth quarter, said of James' shot: "Kind of have to chalk it up to the basketball gods."

Wizards All-Star point guard John Wall said the shot was one James would "probably make one out of a million times."

"This is a game we should've won," Wall said.

The Atlanta Falcons were saying the same thing Monday morning.

"I think every shot is going in," James said.
