Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers fall to LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers: DMan's Report, Game 52 (photos)

LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson were terrific in leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 120-111 victory over the Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored 17 for Los Angeles.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson combined for 79 points, 23 rebounds and 22 assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 120-111, Wednesday night at The Q. Kobe Bryant, in his final appearance in Cleveland as a player, scored 17.

Here is a capsule look at the game, which was televised by Fox Sports Ohio and ESPN:

Time for rest: The Cavs (38-14 overall, 22-4 at home) enter the All-Star break having won three straight -- all decisively against bad Western Conference opponents at home. They defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, 99-84, last Saturday and the Sacramento Kings, 120-100, Monday.

A three-game winning streak is nice, no question. However, because of the caliber of "competition,'' not much can be gleaned from this one. The Cavs did what they are supposed to do.

They do not play again until Feb. 18 against the Bulls at The Q.

Injury concern: Cavs power forward Kevin Love injured his left shoulder in the final minute of the first half. He did not return.

Love has struggled with his shot this season but is averaging 15.8 points and 10.4 rebounds. In the first round of the playoffs last season, Love's left shoulder was ripped out of its socket by Boston's Kelly Olynyk. Surgery followed.

Quality work: The Cavs improved to 30-6 against Western Conference opponents since Jan. 15, 2015.

Yikes: The Lakers (11-44 overall, 5-26 on road) have lost three in a row and 13 of 15.

That's a wrap: Bryant, playing for the 16th time at The Q in games that count, shot 5-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range, and 4-of-4 from the line in 33 minutes. He had six rebounds, three assists and one steal.

The Lakers' first possession resulted in Bryant making a 15-footer against LeBron. Bryant used a rub-screen from Julius Randle topside to gain a half-step on LeBron and pulled up from the right wing.

Bryant helped make matters interesting in the fourth quarter. He assisted on a Jordan Clarkson 3-pointer, drilled a 3-pointer and sank a free throw as part of the Lakers' 9-0 run to close within 104-95 with 5:36 left.

Later in the quarter, Bryant's three free throws cut the Lakers' deficit to 108-100 with 3:34 left. J.R. Smith's 3-pointer and Irving's jumper restored order, pushing the Cavs' lead to 113-100 with 2:27 remaining.

Los Angeles outscored Cleveland, 37-27, in the fourth. Bryant had nine points.

King's English: All-positions LeBron improved to 15-6 against Bryant with a terrific performance. King was 12-of-22 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and 2-of-5 from the line for 29 points in 37 minutes. He had 11 assists, seven rebounds, one steal and one turnover.

LeBron made at least three 3-pointers for the first time since Jan. 12 at Dallas (3-of-6).

LeBron could have scored 50 if he wanted, because no Laker could stay in front of him consistently. Instead, he scored a stress-free 29 and created opportunities for teammates. He has 20+ points and 6+ assists in 11 of his past 12 games.

KI on fire: Point guard Irving shot 15-of-24 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and 2-of-4 from the line for a game- and season-high 35 points in 36 minutes. He had seven assists, three rebounds, two steals and one turnover.

It meant that the Cavs' primary ball handlers, LeBron and Irving, combined for 64 points, 18 assists and two turnovers in 73 minutes.

Irving continued to dazzle with his mid-range jumper, going 7-of-11.

TT's perfection: Center Thompson made all six field-goal attempts and all three free throws for 15 points in 34 minutes. He had 13 rebounds -- seven offensive -- and four assists and one block. He posted a game-best +18.

Thompson simply worked harder than his Laker counterpart(s).

Kevin Love says he feels OK after suffering left shoulder contusion; doesn't expect to miss time

Power forward Kevin Love will not miss any time after suffering a left shoulder contusion in Wednesday night's 120-111 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland Cavaliers can breathe a sigh of relief.

Power forward Kevin Love will not miss any time after suffering a left shoulder contusion in Wednesday night's 120-111 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Love left the game with less than a minute to go in the second quarter as his left arm just dangled. He hurried to the locker room in pain and General Manager David Griffin followed right behind him.

It didn't look good at all. He would not return.

It was the same shoulder he dislocated in the first-round of the playoffs last season against the Boston Celtics. Love said his arm got tangled up with Kobe Bryant.

"At the time I didn't know really what it was," Love said. "It's just like when you get hit in the funny bone of the elbow. Shooting pain. It felt like fire was running down my arm. It's just a stinger and the doctor decided to just be cautions and use the break for it to feel better, but it actually feels OK right now."

He finished the game with eight points and six rebounds in 19 minutes.

Just two weeks ago, Love exited a contest against the Celtics in the third quarter with a left thigh contusion and ended up missing the next game. It was his only absence of the season and he suited up for the next two.

The way Love held his shoulder and the expression on his face was reminiscent of when his postseason journey ended abruptly as he sprinted to the locker room at TD Garden. Fortunately for the Cavaliers and Love, he will be in the starting lineup come Feb. 18 when they host the Chicago Bulls after the All-Star break.

It could have been much worse.

"It's not concerning," Love said of his shoulder history, "but it's the first time that sort of thing has happened [since my first shoulder injury]."

Cleveland Cavaliers defeat Los Angeles Lakers 120-111 in Kobe Bryant's farewell visit; Kevin Love injured

The Kobe Bryant Farewell Tour made its stop in Cleveland Wednesday, and the 120-111 Cavs victory was an afterthought.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Kobe Bryant Farewell Tour made its stop in Cleveland Wednesday night. The 120-111 victory the Cavaliers collected over the Lakers was an afterthought.

Bryant's final appearance in Northeast Ohio was initially the primary focus, but a scary injury to a member of the Cavaliers stole the intrigue.

With under a minute to go in the second quarter, Kevin Love was hit on the left shoulder during a shot attempt. He walked towards the locker room with his left arm dangling. It's the same shoulder he dislocated in the first-round playoff series with the Boston Celtics last season.

Upon Love's departure, General Manager David Griffin also headed to the locker room. The team is calling it a "left shoulder injury," but Griffin told ESPN's Lisa Salters that the injury looked worse than it was and he hoped that Love wouldn't miss much time.

Love played 19 minutes and recorded eight points and six boards, and has a week before the Feb. 18 game vs. Chicago.

Once Love left, Cleveland (38-14) just needed the contest to hurry and be over with. Head coach Tyronn Lue stressed going into the All-Star break on a positive note. They got the win, but suffered a mini setback with the Love injury.

Los Angeles (11-44) wasn't skilled or deep enough to offer a real match. They never held a lead and their defense couldn't stay in front of Kyrie Irving and LeBron James.

Irving scored season-high 35 points and distributed seven assists. James poured in 29 points with seven rebounds and 11 assists. After scoring his eighth point of the night, James passed Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul Pierce (26,166) for 15th all-time in scoring.

In spurts, the Cavaliers played down to their opponent. If truly motivated, they could have really thrashed the Lakers. In the third quarter the Cavaliers built a 22-point lead but the Lakers to trimmed the deficit to eight with 3:31 remaining, the closest they would come.

The Cavaliers won their third straight. But this should have been a night where every Cavalier saw action. Instead, it required unnecessary extended minutes for players who didn't need it.

Tristan Thompson was 6-for-6 from the field and provided 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

There was a plethora of fans sporting the purple and gold Kobe No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys. The Cavaliers played a mini Bryant highlight package on the Jumbotron before introducing him to the Cavalier faithful.

Fans gave him a hearty standing ovation and chanted, "Kobe, Kobe." Bryant raised his arm to acknowledge them with a smile glued to his face.

"We've got to come out with a defensive mindset to start because I know Kobe is going to come out looking to score 50 or 60 [points]," Lue said prior to tipoff. "Our main focus is to come out having a defensive mindset and I think everything else will take care of itself."

Bryant didn't threaten any scoring records. As has been the case all season, the shooting guard struggled, going 5-of-16 for 17 points.

James said it would be an emotional game for him. Those two have dominated the league for the last decade so they gave the basketball community what they wanted: they guarded each other.

If only this were a few years ago, the matchup would have had more appeal. Defensively, Bryant is a shell of himself. He was constantly beat off the dribble and slow to rotate off the ball.

When subbed out with less than a minute to go in the game, Bryant received another standing ovation and when the buzzer sounded, Cavaliers players and coaches went over to embrace Bryant.

Northeast Ohio showed how much they respected one of the game's best.

The All-Star break is upon us. Cleveland won't take the floor again until Feb. 18 at The Q against the Chicago Bulls. Chicago has won the first two games between the teams this season.

How do we know if Browns owner Jimmy Haslam will face charges? -- Bud Shaw's You Said It

Cleveland sports fans wonder about Cam Newton's shoes, the Super Bowl halftime show and whether Jimmy Haslam is in the clear in the Pilot Flying J investigation -- Bud Shaw's You Said It.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- You Said It is based on the premise that the only thing Cleveland sports fans need more than a championship is a sense of humor...

YOU SAID IT

Bud: Do you think Cam Newton will be donning his gold MVP shoes during next year's regular season? - Bob, Shaker

I don't think he wants to get ripped again by Deion Sanders, even though getting criticized by Deion for anything is like being called too flamboyant by Liberace.

Bud: After dozing off during the SB50 halftime show, I woke up to something called the "Puppymonkeybaby."  Should I knock off the Bud Lights? - Rich Feldtz, Fairview Park

Depends on whether you saw it in your living room, or on your TV.

Bud: I sense a disconnect between my opinion of my YSI submissions and your opinion of them. Does that make me uncoachable? - Vince G, Cincinnati

Not to pass the buck, but you should know by now that no decision gets made in this town without LeBron signing off on it.

Bud: For Super Bowl excitement, it's hard to beat the drama of the five minutes between the time the Broncos scored the apparent clinching touchdown and the time the referee announced that replay had confirmed the ruling on the field. Man, I love the suspense of watching referees micromanage - Ignatowski

Just think. If you start doing pushups during the down time, you'll make Ed Hoculi look like Kate Moss in no time.

Dear Bud: Did your English teachers and journalism instructors teach you to write in complete sentences? Or not? -- TonyFromBrunswick

Some did. Some not so much.

Bud: Will a sudden corporate name change to Pilot 'Fleeing J' serve as an indicator that the federal investigation is not going well for Jimmy? - Jim Corrigan, Fairview Park

You Said It winners are under constant watch.

“I previously tried to apply for head coaching position and always seemed to come up short,” Haslam said. “The administration at North has given me an opportunity to implement some things I’ve learned from great head coaches.”

Haslam has coached for over 20 years across the Akron-area public and private schools. He is a transition coordinator employed with Akron’s YMCA Phoenix School.

UFC remains mum on possible Stipe Miocic championship bout

$

When will Stipe Miocic and Fabrico Werdum fight for the heavyweight title?

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Rumors persist about a UFC title bout between Brazilian champion Fabricio Werdum and Euclid native Stipe Miocic.

But neither Miocic nor Dave Lockett, director of public relations, would confirm or deny a possible title bout. Miocic did not return several messages left on his voice mail and Lockett was vague.

"We're hoping to have something pretty soon but we don't know yet," Lockett said. "Obviously, Stipe wants to fight for a title but nothing has been confirmed. We don't have anything official yet. He may fight for the title, but who knows."

So until a Miocic championship bout is made official, rumors will persist until a date is set.

It was first reported in January that Miocic would replace Cain Velasquez, who was injured and forced to pull out of UFC 196 against Werdum. A bout between Miocic and Werdum was set for Feb. 6.

The bout never happened. Werdum claimed injuries.

Now a possible battle between Miocic and Werdum is in limbo.

E. Spencer Kyte writes on UFC.com how Miocic became one of the top contenders in the division last year. And his back-to-back stoppage victories over Mark Hunt and Andrei Arlovski showcased his vast and varied talents in the Octagon.

LeBron James sends Akron teenagers to drop 23 sets of Nike uniforms to Toronto school teams

LeBron James sent 12 Akron high school students to Toronto to represent him in donating Nike uniforms to school sports teams there.

TORONTO - Twelve Akron high school students dropped Nike uniforms to 23 different sports teams from Toronto Public Schools Thursday in LeBron James' name.

Per James' tradition, his charitable LeBron James Family Foundation is making its presence felt in the host city for the NBA All-Star Game, which is in Toronto this year.

The Akron students, who are mentors in the James foundation's education program - they're called "330 Ambassadors" - unveiled the uniforms during a school assembly and fashion show at Earl Haig Secondary School here. The gear went to teams from all different sports - not just basketball - and included badminton, rugby, and ultimate Frisbee teams.

James did not personally attend the uniform drop.

"It means a lot to me and my foundation to be able to give back to every All-Star city, and in Toronto we wanted to do something special for some teams and groups that earned it," James told the Associated Press.

When the All-Star Game was in New York last year, James flew five Akron students to the Big Apple for a weekend of "23 Acts of Kindness," which included uniform drops but also featured several other charitable activities around the city.

This year, the "23 Acts" were covered by the uniforms, but the Akron students will volunteer Friday at local Toronto schools during parent-teacher conferences to supervise younger children, and at Variety Village, a training center for children with disabilities.

On Saturday, James' group will zip around the city to see a play at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, eat at a unique restaurant where guests are encouraged to order their food using sign language, and watch James and the East All-Stars practice in preparation for Sunday's game.

James, if it's possible, will try to keep a lower profile in Toronto.

For instance, last year in New York, James hosted a fashion show with TNT, dedicated a gymnasium his foundation refurbished, and filmed a car commercial. It does not appear that James' public schedule is as busy, though, of course, that's subject to change.

Lake Erie Monsters blank Chicago Wolves for fourth straight win

Brad Thiessen recorded his third shutout in 12 starts Thursday to lead the Lake Erie Monsters over the Chicago Wolves, 5-0.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Monsters scored three short-handed goals in the final minutes of the third period to defeat the Chicago Wolves, 5-0, in an American Hockey League game on Thursday at the Q.

The win was the Monsters fourth straight and improved their record to 26-16-4-3. Chicago, which dropped a 3-2 decision at the Q on Tuesday, fell to 22-21-2-2. Lake Erie is now 5-1-0-0 against the Wolves this season.

Monsters goalie Brad Thiessen stopped 24 shots in recording his third shutout and improving to 8-2-2.

Lake Erie held a 2-0 lead with just over two minutes remaining when Chicago pulled goalie Jordan Binnington (10-9-3), who had 27 saves. In 61 seconds, the Monsters scored three times.

Manny Malhotra started it at 17:57 with a short-handed goal. Nick Moutrey scored another short-handed goal just 26 seconds later.

With Binnington back on the ice but the Monsters still not at full strength, Trent Vogelhuber completed the scoring with his ninth of the season at 18:58.

The Monsters got on the board just 4:08 into the game when Steve Eminger scored his second goal of the season off assists by Eric Roy and Michael Chaput.

The Monsters made it 2-0 at 6:47 of the second period when Daniel Zaar scored his 12th of the season, assisted by Eminger and Chaput.

Eminger finished with a goal and two assists, while Chaput had three goals. The Monsters outshot Chicago, 32-24, and successfully killed seven Chicago power plays.

Home cookin': The Monsters now own a 15-5-1-2 record in games played at Quicken Loans Arena this season.

Up next: The Monsters will play at Texas on Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 6. They return home to host San Antonio for two games next weekend.

Cleveland Indians have three or four bullpen openings with a lot of arms to fill them

The Indians have 30 pitchers reporting to spring training on Wednesday in Goodyear, Ariz. They're looking to add at least one more reliever to help the bullpen.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A baseball team always has moving parts. Sometimes those moving parts have moving parts, especially when spring training is getting near.

Indians' pitchers and catchers report to Goodyear, Ariz. on Wednesday and two areas of the team have yet to reveal themselves - the bullpen and outfield. This story deals with the bullpen.

Last year Indians' relievers posted the second lowest ERA in the American League at 3.12. The World Series champion Royals were the only team with a lower ERA at 2.72.

While the core of that pen is still intact, several ancillary arms have departed. Here's the roll call: Scott Atchison, Gavin Floyd, Nick Hagadone, CC Lee, Marc Rzepczynski, Anthony Swarzak and Ryan Webb. Atchison recently rejoined the Indians as a member of the coaching staff, but the others have scattered to the four corners of the baseball world.

As for the core, closer Cody Allen and set-up men Bryan Shaw and Zach McAllister are back. Jeff Manship probably belongs in that group as well. Last season Manship compiled a 0.92 ERA (four earned runs in 39 1/3 innings) in 32 appearances after starting the season at Class AAA Columbus. Manship's ERA was the lowest in the big leagues and in team history for pitchers with 30 or more appearances in a season.

If Manship is included in the core, that leaves three to four open spots in the pen. The odds favor four spots because manager Terry Francona usually opens the season with an extra reliever or two.

Numerically there will be no problem filling those openings with 30 pitchers coming to camp, including 13 relievers looking for work. Depending on how the starting rotation sorts itself out, Josh Tomlin might be in line for a bullpen spot as well. If TJ House or Cody Anderson don't make the rotation, they'll start at Class AAA Columbus rather than work out of the Tribe's rotation.

The Indians might not be done adding arms. They are still looking to for another reliever and position player before spring training turns serious. The first full squad workout is scheduled for Feb. 23.

The left-handers are the most interesting part in the pitching stampede.

Kyle Crockett and Giovanni Soto, who both saw time with the Indians last year, are on the 40-man roster. Veterans Tom Gorzelanny, Joe Thatcher and Ross Detwiler will report on minor league deals.

Francona is going to need at least one and maybe two lefties to work his matchups. His fallback position in that regard is that Allen (.176), Shaw (.226), Manship (.235) and McAllister (.258), all right-handers, did a good job against lefties last year.

Crockett, 23, rocketed through the minor league system and had an impressive rookie year in 2014. He has a deceptive motion and usually commands the strike zone. Last season he struggled with the Indians and Columbus because he couldn't throw the ball where he wanted.

Soto, 24, made his big league debut last year after spending parts of seven seasons in the minors. After spending most of his career as a starter, the Tribe moved him to the pen. He has a good cutter and is effective against lefties.

Gorzelanny, 33, drew the Indians' attention last year with Detroit when he lowered his arm slot, while keeping his velocity. The Tribe feels that will give him a better chance against lefties this season. Last year lefties hit .222 and righties .354 against him.

Thatcher, 34, made Houston's opening day roster last year as a spring training invitee. He doesn't throw hard, but he's crafty and has had success getting lefties out. Last year lefties hit .245 and righties .323 against him.

Detwiler, 29, has been a starter most of his career, but the Indians will look at him mostly as a reliever. Detwiler has a good fastball. Lefties hit .234 against him and righties .390.

The right-handers coming to camp include Austin Adams, Shawn Armstrong and Dan Otero, who are on the 40-man rosters. Non-roster right-handers include Joba Chamberlain, Joe Colon, Jarrett Grube, Felipe Paulino and Craig Stammen. Starters Mike Clevinger, Ryan Merritt, Shawn Morimando, Adam Plutko and Will Roberts will be camp, but will not compete for a spot in the bullpen.

Adams and Armstrong combined for 36 appearances with the Tribe last year. They combined for 20 saves and 97 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings at Columbus. Armstrong had 80 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings at Columbus and 11 in eight innings with the Tribe.

Otero, acquired by the Indians from Philadelphia for cash in December, is looking for a bounce back season. In 2014 he went 8-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 72 appearances covering 65 innings for Oakland. Otero, who had a 6.75 ERA in 41 appearances last year, throws a lot of ground balls, which could work well with the Tribe's improved infield defense.

Chamberlain, 30, is another bounce back candidate after a ragged 2015 with Detroit and Kansas City. He spent part of the winter working out at Goodyear and reportedly has lost about 30 pounds.

Colon, the Tribe's 12th round pick in 2009, moved to the pen last year and struck out 24 batters in 17 1/3 innings at Columbus. Colon, however, tested positive for a drug of abuse and will be suspended for the first 50 games in 2016.

Of the last three right-handers, Paulino, Grube and Stammen, Paulino and Stammen probably have the best chance. Grube, 9-0 with a 2.26 ERA in 15 appearances, including 13 starts, is seen as more of depth reliever.

Paulino, 32, didn't pitch in the big leagues last year, but made 20 starts for Class AAA Iowa. The 6-3, 260-pound Paulino throws hard and has made 65 starts in the big leagues, but the Indians are looking at him as a reliever.

The Indians signed Stammen earlier this week after he made just five appearances last season with Washington before tearing his right flexor tendon. It's unclear if he'll go to camp ready to compete, but if he's healthy he has a great chance to make the pen.
