Former East Tech basketball star Barbara Turner is now a hall of fame player. Watch video

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Barbara Turner figured it was some kind of mistake. Sure, she led East Tech High School to its first ever girls basketball state title in 2002. And she helped basketball power UConn to two NCAA Titles in four years.

But receiving word that she would join the likes of Kenyon Martin (University of Cincinnati) and Wally Szczerbiak (Miami of Ohio) as part of the 2013 Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame class blew her away.

The induction ceremony is on Saturday in Columbus.

Hall of Fames are for retired players, or for players at the end of their careers. Turner, 28, is far from the end

In the latest edition of "Talking Shop" that takes place at the Eldorado Barbershop, Turner explains why the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame caught her off guard, her basketball life in Turkey, and why Cleveland remains No.1.

Cleveland Indians are 11-4 in May and looking like a contender: Terry Pluto

$

The Indians come home with a 4-3 record in a rugged six-day strecth of the schedule.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - In six days, they had seven games against the Tigers, Yankees and Phillies.

And the Tribe had a 4-3 record.

If you care about the team in Wahoo red, white and blue -- that's a reason to smile.

That 4-3 record began with a 10-4 loss in Detroit. Starter Corey Kluber was crushed, and I had a very bad feeling that the Tigers were about to deliver this message to the Tribe: Welcome to reality.

But the Indians won the next two games -- starting with Ubaldo Jimenez out-pitching Justin Verlander.

We all knew that was coming, right?

Then came the doubleheader at home against the Yankees.

In two games, the Indians scored one run.

Yet, they split the doubleheader. Justin Masterson has already won two complete games by a 1-0 score. There are guys who have been starters in the big leagues for years who can't say that. Not in this era where complete games are about as rare as traditional doubleheaders -- which the Indians hosted on Monday.

After New York, they lost the first game in Philadelphia, 6-2.

Scott Kazmir looked very human, allowing four runs in five innings. The hitters were still in a funk . . . it was now three runs in three games.

When Kluber took the mound Wednesday afternoon, I had little confidence. He had been spanked by the Tigers. Of all the Tribe top pitching prospects -- Trevor Bauer, Justin Masterson and the revived Kazmir -- I have the least faith in Kluber.

His minor league record entering this season was 43-49 with a 4.39 ERA.

But he delivered six solid innings, the bats boomed and the Tribe won, 10-4.

So that made them 4-3 . . . coming after they had won 10-of-11.

With nearly 25 percent of the season finished, the Indians are 22-17.

Are they for real?

The last six days indicate that may be the case.

Not great team. Not a more talented team than the Tigers. But they could be a contending team, perhaps in the Central and certainly for a wild-card spot. That is especially true if the Tigers continue to have some bullpen blowouts -- and wouldn't that be sweet?

I was looking at some stats from the month of May, where the Tribe is 11-4.

1. Jason Kipnis has been a monster with five homers, 16 RBI in 15 games, hitting .281.

2. Yan Gomes (gotta love his potential) is hitting .368 this month. He is a polished catcher with who throws rockets to second base.

3. Nick Swisher has been very solid, hitting .286 with four homers and seven RBI.

4. Mark Reynolds is playing a bit more like Mark Reynolds, hitting only .213 (16 strikeouts in 44 at bats)in May. But fans will take those three homers and 12 RBI. And Reynolds is a real team guy, playing first and now taking over as the regular third baseman as Lonnie Chisenhall is back at Class AAA. Chisenhall was 4-of-22 this month.

5. This month, Jimenez (2-0, 2.31), Masterson (2-0, 3.18), Kazmir (2-1, 3.74), Bauer (1-1, 1.59) and McAllister (1-0, 1.32) have either been solid or very strong. The team has a 3.47 ERA this month, 3.95 overall.

MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James scored 23 points and the Miami Heat rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to beat the Chicago Bulls 94-91 on Wednesday night to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

Dwyane Wade added 18 points for Miami, which ran out to a 22-4 lead, then was outscored by 29 points over the next 27 minutes. The Heat outscored the Bulls 25-14 in the fourth to wrap up the series in five games.

Carlos Boozer finished with 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulls, who were without Derrick Rose for the 99th straight game. Nate Robinson and Jimmy Butler missed potential tying 3-pointers on the final possession of the season for Chicago, which dropped the last four games of the series.

GRIZZLIES 88, THUNDER 84

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Zach Randolph helped Memphis reach the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history, finishing with 28 points and 14 rebounds in the Grizzlies' Game 5 victory over Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant missed a 16-foot jumper from the left wing that would have tied it with 6 seconds left, finishing off a miserable shooting night for the three-time NBA scoring champion.

Durant ended up with 21 points on 5-for-21 shooting, the third-worst performance of his playoff career. The top seed in the West, Oklahoma City went 2-6 after All-Star Russell Westbrook went out with a knee injury.

Mike Conley added 13 points and 11 assists for Memphis.

Cleveland Browns and NFL P.M. Links: Can Browns go from last to the playoffs? Josh Cribbs' memorable moments

$

If miracles do happen, can the Cleveland Browns make the postseason in 2013?

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ten teams made changes in the front office or made changes on their coaching staff, writes Don Banks of Sports Illustrated. And the vast majority of those changes came with six of the NFL's eight last-place teams, a list that includes the Cleveland Browns.

So the point Banks tries to make is that miracles do still happen on an annual basis in the NFL, when a last-place team makes the playoffs after changes in the front office and the coaching staff.

When it comes to the Browns, Banks writes the Browns have a better chance of making the postseason in 2014:

I'm convinced better days are ahead for the Browns, but I'll give you the three biggest reasons 2013 probably isn't going to produce the end of their 10-year playoff drought, tied for the second-longest in the league behind Buffalo: Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Cleveland's division is simply devoid of a soft touch, and even if you view the aging Steelers as being on the descent, the Browns can't count on automatic wins in any of their six AFC North games. Until that dynamic changes, it's hard to find math that adds up to a Cleveland playoff run.

Pilot Flying J's Jimmy Haslam says he absolutely had no knowledge of fuel rebate cheating by sales managers

The Browns owner said a review under way by auditors shows that about 250 trucking companies out of 400 that were on a "manual" fuel rebate program may have problems with their rebates. That's out of about 5,000 trucking company customers served by Pilot Flying J. He called the initial assessment "a little fluid" because auditors are still digging into what transpired.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pilot Flying J's Jimmy Haslam, addressing trucking company executives this morning, said he had no knowledge of deliberate fuel rebate shortages to some of the Knoxville truck stop chain's customers.

"Absolutely not. I will say absolutely not," Haslam told a capacity audience of hundreds of transportation industry officials. "I was not aware of any of this."

Haslam said a review under way by auditors shows that about 250 trucking companies out of 400 that were on a "manual" fuel rebate program may have problems with their rebates. That's out of about 5,000 trucking company customers served by Pilot Flying J. He called the initial assessment "a little fluid" because auditors are still digging into what transpired.

Haslam initially was not on the agenda for the two-day seminar held by Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary in Indianapolis.

But he accepted the firm's invitation to address trucking officials about claims that Pilot Flying J, the nation's biggest diesel fuel retailer, cheated customers out of rebates on bulk fuel purchases.

Scopelitis handles transport-related legal issues exclusively. It collected questions from clients  and forwarded 18 to Haslam, all of which he addressed this morning.

"I apologize for the actions of our people. And I want to look everyone in the eye and say we'll do everything we can to make things right," Haslam said.

The Pilot CEO, who bought a majority share of the Cleveland Browns last year -- and was said then to be a leader expected to be closely involved with the team's operations -- said in a brief interview after his address that "Unfortunately, there were some things that happened a couple of levels below me" at Pilot Flying J that he missed.

"It's a blip. It may be a substantial blip. But in no way, shape or form does it affect my ownership of the Browns," he said.

During his 40-minute presentation, Haslam answered questions screened by his lawyers. Scopelitis President Gregory Feary said he didn't want to put Haslam in the position of answering on-the-spot questions because of the federal investigation. Feary said he was waiting to see how Pilot Flying J resolved any rebate issues with his trucking company clients, rather than filing a lawsuit.

"He's been awfully forthright and candid in his communications," he said. "As long as that continues, we see no need to get into a litigation situation."

FBI and IRS agents who descended on Pilot Flying J's headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn., on the morning of April 15 were looking for evidence of rebate fraud that took place at the company for more than five years, according to a search warrant affidavit used in the raid.

Haslam released a statement later in the day saying he believed there was no wrongdoing.

Then U.S. Attorney William Killian took the unusual step of ordering the search warrant affidavit unsealed. It showed that inside informants secretly recorded conversations among Pilot employees who brazenly discussed a rebate scheme, known by terms such as "trimming," "cost-plussing" and "screwing."

An embarrassed Haslam said that his company had been sullied by the claims, and he called for a series of changes in the way Pilot Flying J does business.

The affidavit indicates rebate fraud was widespread and used to boost sales commissions and company profits. It lists 35 current or former Pilot employees that it said are or were involved in supervising or supporting the sale of diesel fuel.

It doesn't suggest that all them were involved in illegal activity. But it says Haslam and Pilot President Mark Hazelwood knew about shortchanging customers because they attended sales meetings where it was discussed.

Haslam has said he had no knowledge of cheating and said "any willful wrongdoing" was "intolerable."

Rich Bren of Phoenix-based CMS, which provides technology services for trucking firms, said  "It's sad to think that someone would be so abusive to their customer base."

But Bren said of Haslam, "Give the man a chance. I would hope that everything's done right, to make restitution."

The owner of a southern Indiana trucking company with annual revenues of $50 million said he was "shocked, as the rest of the world was."

The executive, who did not want his name published, said his company did a "spot audit" after the FBI aired and didn't identify any rebate problems.

Among the trucking companies the affidavit said were defrauded are Chicago-based JKC Trucking Co. and W.N. Morehouse Truck Line Co. of Omaha, Neb. Neither sent representatives to Indianapolis.

"I've been getting so many calls from so many places, I wish we hadn't been mentioned," said Michael Kucharski, JKC vice president.

Kucharski said several people from Pilot Flying J have recently contacted his company. He declined to say what was discussed.

Curt Morehouse said Haslam called and settled up by paying about $150,000 his business was owed.

"We got all our money. I got a news sales rep," Morehouse said this week. FBI and IRS agents are scheduled to visit his company tomorrow, he said.

Meanwhile, five trucking firms have called Morehouse looking for tips on how to detect rebate shortages. It would be difficult detective work because they don't have software that tracks fuel prices, Morehouse said.

His advice to the companies: Check bills, find a few examples of questionable rebates and then call Pilot and ask them to finish going over their payment history. Haslam has said Pilot has a team of internal auditors reviewing every one of the company's 3,300 contracts with trucking customers.

"Make them do the work," Morehouse said.

A few thoughts on the arrival of Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer: Terry Pluto

At least the Browns do have three interesting quarterbacks if injuries hit.

hoyer-mug-2012-ap.jpgView full sizeBrian Hoyer is an interesting addition, but figures to be nothing more than a backup, says Terry Pluto.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A few thoughts about St. Ignatius product Brian Hoyer signing a two-year deal with the Browns:

1. He was a backup quarterback in New England for three years (2009-11). He was 27-of-43 passing. Played little.

2. Was with Arizona last season, had a start against San Francisco (27-13 loss). He was 19-of-34 that day, one touchdown, one interception, 73.8 rating. That's his only pro start.

3. Hoyer's pro stats are very limited: 57-of-96 (56 percent), two touchdowns and three interceptions, 72.2 rating.

4. Hoyer is 27; he played at Michigan State. It is a bit of a concern that Arizona (hurting for a quarterback) saw him as little more than a backup. The Cards cut him after trading for Carson Palmer.

5. With the Browns, I see him as an upgrade over third-stringer Thad Lewis, but I doubt he jumps over Jason Campbell to compete with Weeden.

6. In December 2011, Michael Lombardi was working for the NFL Network. He said this about Patriots backups Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett: "I think Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are starters. I've said this many times: If I would have taken the GM job of the 49ers, I would have gone after Brian Hoyer, because I think he has all the traits and characteristics. If I were the Cleveland Browns, I'd rather have Brian Hoyer behind center than Colt McCoy. I think he's got all the traits you need, in terms of leadership, toughness, the arm strength, the ability to move the team."

7. That was two years ago, and Lombardi loves Bill Belichick and most of the Patriots. What Lombardi said on the NFL Network two years ago may not be what he believes today, so keep that in mind. Does he still see Hoyer as a starter? Hard to know. But he still likes Hoyer, or else why would the Browns have signed him? At least the Browns do have three interesting quarterbacks. If injuries hit (as they did in 2010 when Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and McCoy all were hurt), the Browns do have options.

8. My guess is Weeden starts and if anyone takes his job, it will be Campbell.

C.J. McCollum a likely first-round draft choice, and Deshaun Thomas thinks he could be: Cleveland Cavaliers Insider

Will Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas join Canton Glen Oak's C.J. McCollum in the first-round of the NBA draft?

CHICAGO -- Two players with Ohio ties displayed confidence at the NBA combine.

One, shooting guard C.J. McCollum of Canton Glen Oak and Lehigh, will be a first-round pick and the other, Deshaun Thomas of Ohio State, thinks he could be.

McCollum, a 6-3 guard, is a likely lottery pick, despite playing just 12 games last year after breaking his left foot at VCU on Jan. 5. He went into the game leading the nation in scoring at 25.7 points per game and wound up averaging 23.9.

He says he's completely healed and ready to go.

"I think I bring a lot of things,'' he said at the NBA combine on Thursday morning. "Having gone to four years of college, I'm definitely mature, mentally and physically ready to contribute right away. Offensively I think I can do a lot of things on the ball and off the ball. Pretty crafty on ball screens, pretty good at reading screens. You just get a heady player who's ready to come in and fit into your system.''

Thomas, a 6-7 junior forward, led the Big Ten in scoring at 19.8 points per game before announcing his intention to turn pro. He is projected as a second-round pick at this point.

"I believe I can be that late first-round pick,'' Thomas said at the combine. "I have confidence. But all I've got to do is keep working, do what I can do. As long as I can feel like when I can walk out of that gym that I worked hard, I'll leave it in God's hands and everything will take care of itself.''

Asked if it would be a slight to be second-rounder after his career at Ohio State, Thomas said, "It's all about getting in there and being with the right team, having the right team pick you and going from there. Are you going to work out? Are you going to keep going? That's what my motivation is. Get in there, work out, try to work your way up and be great.''

There are questions about Thomas' effort when he's not scoring, but he's ready to answer those on the floor.

"I can bring great energy,'' said Thomas, adding that he had trimmed his body fat from near 12 percent to under 9. "I can bring the toughness, the competitiveness, the will to win. Everybody says, 'Yeah, you can bring the scoring, but what else can you do?'

"I can go out there and get the extra points, extra rebounds, extra assists, just the little things. I learned that from playing at Ohio State. It's not all about the scoring. It's all about the effort and doing the little things to help your team win.''

Oden update: Thomas said he has seen former Ohio State star Greg Oden working out in Columbus and said the former No. 1 pick in the draft looks great trying to work his way back from career-threatening knee injuries.

"Man, he looks unbelievable,'' Thomas said. "He's down there working out. He's running, lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he's ready to go. He's running, getting in shape. I'll tell you one thing. For a big 7-footer that's all he does -- running and getting in shape. He's looking right.''

Cavs notes: McCullom and Kansas star Ben McLemore were the only two players interviewed on Thursday who said they had interviews with the Cavs, but that means nothing in the scheme of things. The Cavs didn't talk to Dion Waiters or Tyler Zeller last year. The Cavs also can invite players to Cleveland for interviews and/or workouts at a later date. ... Nick Gilbert will represent the Cavs on stage at the draft lottery on Tuesday for the third straight year, while vice chairman Jeff Cohen will be in the room for the actual lottery drawing for the third straight year. "Last time,'' Cohen promised, meaning the Cavs would be in the playoffs next year and not the lottery.

Lakewood's Tom Waitrovich rides early ace to Ohio Senior Open title

Hole-in-one on third hole of the day helps Waitrovich claim a two-shot victory at Firestone's West Course.

AKRON, Ohio -- You know there's a chance a good day is at hand when you are one stroke behind and make a hole-in-one early in the final round of a 36-hole tournament.

The thought flashed briefly through Tom Waitrovich's mind on Thursday, shortly after his ball rolled smoothly into the cup on the 206-yard third hole on Firestone's West Course at the 28th annual Ohio Senior Open.

"There was still a lot of golf to play," said Waitrovich, the head professional at Lakewood Country Club for 22 years. "I still had 15 holes to play and there were a lot of good players out there."

Still, it was a good omen. The ace, the second of Waitrovich's career and first since 1995, was the perfect springboard to a 5-under 65 -- a tournament low -- and victory with a two-day total of 8 under. He made one bogey over the two days to win by two shots over Medina golf club designer Bob Koch and Congress Lake pro Tom Atchison.

The victory was worth $2,500.

• Official final scores from Ohio Senior Open

First-round leader Gary Robison made four bogeys in a row on the front side and closed with a 1-over 70 to finish fifth at 137, two shots behind Aurora's Gary Trivisonno.

Waitrovich, 53, made the turn at 32 and took the lead for good with a birdie on the 448-yard 11th when his wedge from 165 yards stopped eight feet away. He went to 8 under two holes later with a two-putt birdie from about 60 feet on the par-5 13th.

The former Division II All-American from Minnesota-Duluth was able to get up and down to save par on three of the final five holes.

Atchison, a former three-time NOPGA section champion, eagled the par-4 11th from about 150 yards with a 9-iron and added birdies on 13, 15 and 17. He bogeyed 18 but it was inconsequential after Waitrovich made a routine par on the final hole, hitting a hybrid off the tee and an 8-iron safely on the green.

The victory left Waitrovich mentally drained. Lakewood is undergoing a massive clubhouse reconstruction project that will not be finished until March. And, there was the depth of the field. It all takes a toll when you are a club pro.

"This is not an easy tournament to win," he said. "I mean, look at the leaderboard. You have some of the best seniors in our section in Atchison and Trivisonno and Gary Robison. You know those guys aren't going to beat themselves."

Clevelander Walt Robertson shot a final-round 66 to win the Super Seniors division (players 60 and over) with a 36-hole total of 140 and Toledo's Alan Fadel was the low amateur with the same score.

Twinsburg's Jalen Washington is going to Ohio State in the fall as a preferred walk-on, but if the senior shortstop performs as he did during Thursday's 5-3 victory against Copley, his status as a Buckeye could soon change.

Washington ripped a leadoff home run in the fourth inning, then drove in a pair of runs with a sixth-inning double to earn the Tigers a Division I sectional final showdown against top-seeded Wadsworth.

Chardon 7, Solon 6: The third-seeded Hilltoppers needed a three-run fourth inning to avoid a Division I sectional semifinal upset. Mason Bender's two singles, triple, two RBI and two runs scored paved the way.

Mayfield 5, Cleveland Heights 0: The lone hit John Schreiber surrendered was a sixth-inning bunt single during the Division I sectional semifinal blanking. He struck out 17 for the No. 7-seeded Wildcats.

Willoughby South 5, Shaker Heights 3: The eighth-seeded Rebels ousted fourth-seeded Shaker Heights as TJ Lett pitched five innings and hit a home run in the Division I sectional semifinal victory.

Softball

Beaumont 3, Perry 2: The sixth-seeded Blue Streaks won their eighth straight game and captured a Division II sectional title behind Josie Zucca and Ali Pophal, who teamed up for five hits.

Oberlin 3, Black River 1: Kaitlyn Curtis-Campbell's home run highlighted a Division III sectional semifinal upset, when seventh-seeded Oberlin eliminated the second-seeded Pirates. Tori Smart toed the rubber for Black River, spelling ace and Ursuline recruit Dagmar Smith. Smith was in the hospital after a fainting spell at an end-of-the-day assembly, but she was later released and made it to the game to watch the final two innings.

Brooklyn 5, Elyria Catholic 0: The third-seeded Hurricanes earned a Division III sectional final berth after Ball State recruit Jocelyn Rivera had a three-hit, 12-strikeout game.

Walsh Jesuit 13, Woodridge 0: Taylor Rahach struck out 11 of 15 batters during her perfect game as the top-seeded Warriors advanced to the Division II district tournament.

Stow 5, Mentor 1: The Bulldogs clinched the Northeast Ohio Conference River Division title. Jenni Heid's two-run homer was key.

Parma 9, Normandy 5: The Redmen reigned in the NOC Lake Division as Ursuline recruit Brittany Humbel allowed eight hits, struck out 10 and had two hits and an RBI.

Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division meet: Wickliffe's girls got the better of Independence, 133-121.33, to win the team title. Brittany Fortkamp got the Blue Devils going by winning the high jump at 4-8, while discus thrower Mariah Porter won with a throw of 108-9. Wickliffe then went 1-2 in the 100 meter hurdles. Madison Simpkins hit the tape at 17.26, followed by Alexis Gricar at 17.34.

Simpkins also captured the 300 hurdles in 50.03, while pole vaulter Angel Meyers cleared 10-6, one of many meet records that fell. Hawken's 4x800 relay of Jessica Huang, Emily Staufer, Alexandra Markovich and Rachel McKay set a meet record when it ran 9:56.40, and Markovich ran 2:22.75 to set the 800 record. Deanna Gesicki of Independence turned in a record time of 59.71 in the 400, as did Beachwood's 4x200 foursome of Maya Gaines-Smith, Jaelyn Pounds, Hannah Kahn and Alexandra DeVaughn (1:47.87) and its 4x400 relay of Pounds, Hannah Richardson, Emilykate Hopson-Byrd and DeVaughn (4:13.23). Gabrielle Perryman of Beachwood tied the 100 record when she clocked 12.80.

Independence won the boys title with 143 points, followed by Cuyahoga Heights with 119. Kyle Polman and Ryan Kuzilla finished 1-2 for the Blue Devils in the 1,600, when they ran 4:35.01 and 4:36.90, respectively, then did likewise in the 3,200 as Polman had a record time of 9:39.18, followed by Kuzilla at 10:16.97. Polman also headed the 800 field (2:00.86) and joined Kuzilla, Shane Mathew and Shane Bender in winning the 4x800 relay in 8:31.80. Brian Calvey of Independence is also the new record holder in the 400 after crossing the finish line in 49.33.

Cleveland Browns: Shaker Heights native, wide receiver Perez Ashford, welcomes opportunity (video)

Free agent wide reciever Perez Ashford hopes to take advantage of his opportunity with his hometown team.

BEREA, Ohio - Undrafted free-agent wide receiver Perez Ashford did not get drafted out of Northern Illinois, but he finds himself in an ideal situation when it comes to making noise in his attempt at an NFL career.

Ashford, out of Shaker Heights, is giddy when it comes to participating in the Organized Team Activities (OTAs) of his hometown Cleveland Browns, but the possibility of adding depth at wide receiver and on special teams is a plus.

"As far as playing receiver and special teams, what better place than to do it for your hometown team?" Ashford said. "This was the best team for me."

Ashford averaged a little over 10 yards per catch in his four years at NIU, and he averaged 10.2 yards per punt return and just over 19 yards per return on kickoff. Those are not staggering numbers, but Ashford wants to give it a go with the Browns, who are now without return ace Josh Cribbs, who signed a free-agent deal with the Oakland Raiders.
